Its ironic isn't it that the spanish built 109s were powered by the merlin & back in the day, it was the merlin's that powered our aircraft that brought them down. Along with the armament & of course the skill, dedication, bravery of our pilots of whatever nationality in fighter command. However a special shout out has too go to 303 sqn, god bless them & i Salute you all Utmost respect.............

Did the Spits in the Battle of Britain have four bladed Props ? I seem to remember that they only had three ! Am I wrong ? (PS I'm getting old !)

The aircraft are Spanish Air Force ME-109s that were re-engined with Rolls Royce Merlin engines. At least one was restored to original powerplant.

Dave, they're Hispano Buchons that were built with Merlins. Several now have DB engines but they're latterday conversions rather than a restoration of original powerplant.

Base aircraft of Hispano Buchon was Messerschmitt Bf 109G - 2. That's why you can't see Erla - cockpit hoods in these planes, or high wooden rudders too (except Buchon two-seater version). Buchon's RR Merlin 500-45 was originally meant for multi-engine passenger aircrafts. Very interesting aircraft, whose character was considered sufficient in 1950's Spain.

This plane caught my eye when I first saw "Battle Of Britain" and felt kinda sad when I found out that this wasn't the actual Bf-109 😄

Great footage. Interesting how Christopher Nolan for "Dunkirk" had the ME-109's nose cowlings painted yellow (later paint scheme / not historically accurate for 1940) as he thought the average viewer would have trouble seeing / telling the difference between the ME-109's and the Spitfires, and yet here / for "The Battle of Britain" ("TBOB") they went for historical accuracy, they didn't feel the need to paint the cowlings yellow, etc. I wonder if Christopher Nolan watched "TBOB" to be inspired by and learn how to make a film using real aircraft, etc.

You are wrong, yellow nose cowlings on Bf 109s are historically accurate for 1940.

In the film they're called 'yellow nosed bastards' which I believe they refered to as during the battle.

@@MakotoAtava Indeed, as are Red and White. I've even seen reference to blue, but that's very rare and might be inaccurate. yellow was the most common it seems, when colored cowlings were used.

I have to agree the famous Ace Helmut Wick who was active during the BOB had a yellow nose on his BF 109!!
