Great tribute! It is so often said that the Battle of Britain was a close run thing which could have gone either way. In reality, the Luftwaffe were on a hiding to nothing from the very first day. Thanks to Hugh Dowding, Britain by the time Hitler sent the Luftwaffe over, had the most advanced and sophisticated air defence system the world had ever seen, and at no time were we in danger of losing the battle. The Germans hopelessly underestimate the strength of the RAF and our defence capabilities, and to put it frankly, did not know what had hit them. Although the eventual defeat of Hitler's Germany can be credited largely to the Soviet Union, the Battle of Britain can be considered as marking the beginning of the end for Nazi tyranny.

Little known fact. Canada was the only country to supply a squadron of aircraft, pilots, and gear during the battle. RCAF Squadron 1. When they were finally let off the leash they bravely engaged a group of twin engine planes over the channel, shooting several down. These turned out to be RAF Blenheims unfortunately. Anyways, heroes everyone of them!

The RAF's victory is all the more amazing given that Britain was still broke from the First World War at the outset of WWII and that despite all of its other virtues the Merlin engines in the RAF's aircraft did not have fuel injection, whereas Luftwaffe aircraft had fuel injected engines which gave them a definite advantage in some aerial manoeuvres. Also the RAF had very few experienced pilots like Douglas Bader.

The Stuka was not fundamentally a bad airplane - far from it. Goering, however, really fumbled with his 'strategy' to protect the dive bombers. He refused to allow his fighters to fly higher altitude/top cover, which pretty much handed the initiative to the British in every encounter. Even if their aircraft were slower than the Bf-109 in level flight, they were MUCH faster coming out of a dive. They would roll in from high altitude, pick off the bombers, and then climb away at a dive speed too fast for the German escorts to pursue. Goering's insistence that fighters remain in close proximity to the bombers frustrated pretty much everyone in the Luftwaffe but the man himself, and cost countless crews their lives.

will whitmarsh the hurricane was the work horse, and it's job was to attack the bombers for which it did successfully. the spitfires job was to attack the fighter escorts. hurricanes indeed shot down more enemy aircraft as there were a lot more of them than there were spitfires at the time. but as you say the spitfires got the glory as most lufftwaffe pilots had spitfire snobbery and if shot down it was always down to a spitfire rather than admit they were shot down by the older hurricane.

Fighter ratios favoured the Germans primarily because the Germans were able to concentrate on enemy fighters. The British fighters had to be preoccupied with the bombers and, if possible, avoid expending too much ammunition chasing escort fighters when the bombers were the ones carrying the bombs. Also, the primary British fighter plane, the Hawker Hurricane, was at a significant performance disadvantage to the German Messerschmitt Bf-109.

The Polish pilots were never rewarded. Due to the Yalta agreement, Poland was added to the influence sphere of the Soviet Union - something these brave Polish RAF pilots had never fought for. Return to their own country was impossible - they'd most likely have been treated as spies. On the other hand, they weren't welcome in the country they'd been fighting for, the United Kingdom. A pretty poor appraisal of their performance in the Battle of Britain, if you ask me.
