One of the most important battles in the American War for Independence was fought on January 17, 1781 in a remote part of the South Carolina backwoods at a place called Cowpens. American forces, led by General Daniel Morgan, led British forces, under the command of 26-year old Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton, deep into the back country. When Tarleton's forces caught up, Morgan turned and fought. In less than one hour the British lost 110 killed and 220 wounded. The Americans suffered 12 killed and 60 wounded. More than 500 British troops surrendered. The victory at Cowpens was a turning point in the war. Ten months later the British were defeated at Yorktown and soon the war was over.
