The strategical aspect of this game is insane. While I love total war, a lot of the battles are just engaging infantry and flanking around with cav. In this game there are reserves, supplies, mass infantry charges and counter charges, layered defenses and also the campaign features. I love this game but sometimes I hesitate to play it just because I get mentally exhausted after a battle 😂. But seriously, I have had some memorable battles in this game, like this one time I massed a large amount of infantry in one area and did a huge infantry charge right into the enemy center which broke their force in two and then became easy to mop up. It would be awesome if this game had multiplayer, maybe a future title? Imagine team battles, that would be awesome. One more idea I have for this game is to maybe add a campaign map and make it so you have to plan the logistics of a campaign and utilize the grand strategy of concentrating your forces. What if the campaign map was a combination of a total war campaign map with the ability to build buildings but time constantly progresses like mount and blade. With the ability to pause the game of course. That would be amazing I think. I hope Total War get's inspired by Ultimate General and adds some of its features to their own game.

To be fair, the Civil War was around the time period that warfare was becoming more and more modern, and therefore more and more complicated, battles were still fought in huge regiments and what not but it was very much a transitional period, one that became fully realized during WW1, for example, the first usage of trench warfare was used IN the Civil War, there was also an example of the first successful usage of a submarine in a war, from a military history viewpoint it was a very fascinating period. Most total wars take times in history where while warfare was certainly still complex in it's own right, and I agree Total War should utilize some of these complexities more in their games, it really can't be compared to this period's warfare.

Meagher leading the Irish Brigade here. In the real battle, he was he in the back, but his Brigade marched forward and stood their ground, and got absolutely slaughtered. of the 1200 original men in the unit only 280 were ready to muster the next day. This is also the battle where the two opposing Irish brigades fought each other. General saw this and was worried that the Confederate Irish brigade wouldn't hold the line, and send reverses to form up right behind the line. However the confederate Irish brigade slaughtered their brethren.

I have done both Union and CSA all the way through. CSA Fredericksburg battle was like 40k casualties in the union side and around 13k for my CSA army. I brought up my units like you were and actually had the entire union army in the town of Fredericksburg with 4 brigades across the river cutting off their retreat - then I was cutoff with the victory message. The union side in the battle of Fredericksburg I withheld most of my units and conducted a breach attack along the river SE of the town. Exploited it with half my arm and just rolled up the entire CSA Line. That was like 33k casualties on the CSA and 18k for my Union army. I love this game, very immersive. Love the historical aspect, the continuity feature between battles and armies. Great, absolutely great game. Love watching your replays along with JF. More videos please! Can't wait for this to finish and possibly mods in the future with 18th and 19th century conflicts. My generals name is Ned Stark lol haha

Hey Apollo, so nice to see you play more Ultimate Civil War General! I'm a huge fan of you and your work, you have made total war that much more fun to watch and enjoy:) Thank you! Anyways, I have some tip/suggestions for you when playing UCWG if you'd like a bit of help in your future battles. First off, the top righthand corner timer is Hours and Minutes, not Minutes and Seconds, and it's representative of the time that was ticking away during the real battle. You can see in the top center the timebar, the objectives that you need to capture or hold, etc. Its basically just an overview of your progress and how much time you have to hold out or for an attack. Its also a nice historical touch giving you an idea of the timeframe of these battles. Next, make use of the Fallback button when possible to pull your men back without turning their backs on the enemy and thus avoiding being "Flanked!" or "Rear Flanked!". When using the Fallback button, your men will retreat in the opposite direction they were facing, and you can halt them with the spacebar. Fall back becomes incredibly important when you play the campaign, and for readjusting your line troops in the heat of battle since it will not expose your flanks and rear (the men are withdrawing and retreating, instead of wheeling around and exposing their backs to the enemy). Use Space-bar to halt the the Unit and the tap it again to give them a "Hold" order. This will keep them in place and is great for anchoring your battleline and more importantly your Skirmish units. You should "Deploy Skirmishers" out of your Line Brigades when possible (it takes about 15% of the brigades troops) and deploy them in front or to flank around, harass, and most importantly as your eyes and ears for scouting. Skirmish units have a higher Cover rate in the open and in cover, and can take volley's from your enemies while your parent infantry brigade fires in safety from behind their screen. You can re-integrate your skirmishers back into your parent unit when you are finished if you'd like. As for movement, be sure to use the drag and re-position movement (Right click and drag) to move your units, making sure to snake along roads where possible (Units move quicker along roads and lose less "condition". Cavalry come in two forms, Melee cavalry (A Horse Head), and Mounted Infantry (A horse head with a little Rifle next to it). Both cavalry types are fast, great for scouting, and for exposing enemy units, though they are different in other respects. Melee cavalry are excellent at charging and melee, which is best done when hitting the enemy from the flank or rear. Mounted infantry can dismount (and Remount) and fight as skirmishing infantry and are usually armed with carbines or rifles. This makes them excellent for rushing forward defensive positions and holding a temporary position while your infantry is moving up, or for screening your force as a whole. They are also good for dismounting on the sides and rear of an enemy and shooting from cover and such. Mounted Infantry can conduct cavalry charges but their rifles are not as good as your Melee Cavalry's saber and pistol loudout. You should certainly play the campaign, as it is a much different and more satisfying experience than the historical battles. Building and maintaining your Corps, your political and military career, and having to worry about casualties (and replacements), equipment, and many other factors brings a whole new dimension ot the game. Also you are able to name your Brigades, which is very fun and interesting. I have a number of distinguished Brigades that have been with me from the beginning and are now full of combat veterans. "Pratts Tigers" (named after their thrice wounded yet indomitable Commander Pratt), Loomis: First and Only" (Named after Officer Loomis who was killed leading his men at the bloddy yet successful defense of Gaines Mill. After the battle, his Brigade took his name as theirs in honor of his bravery), the "Stars and Stripes" (The Brigade I can rely on to hold the line no matter the cost in the name of the Union, which they have done many a time with grievous casualties), to name a few. Also if you want to fight a helluva battle, play Shiloh as the Union. Its a marathon battle about twice as long and twice as hard as Fredericksburg! Anyways, hope I helped:) I'm looking forward to your next battle sir, and keep up the great work! -Higgin's the Biggun's

@alwaysfish907 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT! I'm raising a Coors to you now! In an odd way, he's just one of the many warriors my wife tracked down with genealogy. My mother's grandfather was a decorated surgeon in World War I, (he was a doctor and a lawyer) at Belleau Wood. And, my dad's dad, Richard Barksdale, almost won the Medal of Honor as a bombardier in a B-25 over Italy. Flak killed the co-pilot, and the pilot went crazy and he had to land the plane--saving the crew. He knew how because he'd been to flight school (but he had Scarlett Fever so they wouldn't let him fly). I never met him, but he was a hell of a man's man. I know this because my father was the same. And on and on it goes. All the same, General Barksdale is still the legend that I put my kids to bed with at night. What we do in life echoes in eternity, right? I tell myself, just once, please Lord, give me the balls to die like a man. I want to go out like General Barksdale.

The CSA forces were, however outnumbered many times, still a great threat to the Union armies. This because their morale was much higher than that of the soldiers of the union. The two things that costed them the war was the fact that they couldn't recruit as many forces as the Union to replenish heavy losses and the fact that the railway in the north was more advanced.
@200membersofcongressdncgop2

@@200membersofcongressdncgop2 There's a historian (I forgot his name) who made a historical study based on counterfactual reasoning and deducted that the railways had a bigger impact on the war than the industry, as you pointed out here. That being said, it had an effect on the overall war, but less so when it came to battles. Remind you that the CSA controlled enough plantations to both cloth their men and have a decent income (which could be spent on the war effort).

When I was doing the fight at the stone walls, I had underestimated the need of troops on the front and was left with 3 1000 man brigades from lack of manpower and a group of snipers and Calvary. It was one of the most badass holding of the lines I have ever had in a game with most brigades falling to under 200 men and Calvary barely pushing off charging enemy brigades when they tried to rush my men. I held out long enough to send three brigades from the middle battle over and save the day. The snipers meanwhile held the let flank and killed an excess of 2000 men, routing at least 3 brigades before they could flank the walls.
