@The Real Man "Don't know about car?" Sorry, but do you know about car yourself? CVTs are used because they can keep the engine in an efficient rpm range and give better MPGs, which is of course, a major selling point for economy compact cars. Same thing with the turbo. It's about lowering the engine displacement and increasing the fuel efficiency while maintaining the power. This should sound familiar because its the whole reason for Skyactiv. But even with Skyactiv, Mazda still had to resort to turbocharging, and I won't be surprised if they start using CVTs as well. As you see in the video, the newest CVTs have come a long way.

I test drove a Mazda 3 sedan yesterday. It was the preferred trim with AWD. As a 5+ year owner of a 2016 Mazda 3 hatchback I-Touring manual 2.0, here are my thoughts: Impressive torque off the line! Feels quicker than mine, everywhere. Very quiet and the suspension was much more supple, again than my 2016 I didn’t like the steering wheel shape. Mine is round and very comfortable. This new one is squared off all around the wheel, which leaves a square edge that digs into my hands. I like the new media screen and system. It is more upscale than before. I don’t mind the screen not being a touch screen, as I never use it that way in my car. I always just use the controls down by where my arm rests, very easy I never have to lift my arm. The back seat backrest is too vertical and not comfortable. It they could just lean it back a little it would be a big improvement. It feels small in the back seat, but I guess that’s the way compact cars are made. The HVAC controls used to have where you can press one of two buttons to aim the air coming from the vents. To your face, to your face and feet, and easily back to your face. Now you have to go all the way through all the choices to get back to where you started, you can’t just go right back. Maybe one less button but not an improvement to me. I can’t really speak about the handling as there were no curvy roads on my test drive. But even if its not as good as the older version, that’s ok as the ride quality feels like its in another class. One final thought, the dealer I went to charges an extra $2300 over the MSRP. For that you would get window tinting and paint sealant. Plus they charge a $500 doc fee. I would never pay that, but since they stay in business I guess all their buyers accept it.

I never wipe fingerprints off the screen, never reach to the top of the dash, as the knobs are right under my hand when my elbow is on the armrest, and I never accidentally hit the wrong button when the road is choppy or curvy. The tactile feedback from the controller is excellent, and most of the time I don't need to look at the screen because I can feel the individual clicks from the knob. 2022 Honda Civic! I've driven several 2020/2021 Mazda 3's and came away unimpressed. The ride quality is the most significant drawback. Many of our roads are in disrepair and you need a vehicle that drive over them without sharp jolts. The high belt line is also very difficult to get used to. The new Civic is very refined, quiet, high quality and strikes the perfect balance between good ride quality and agile handling.
@chuckd7423

The testers in the video said both cars rode smoothly, but said the Mazda was quieter, which was confirmed when they tested them with a noise meter. A 3.3 db difference at 55 mph, from 59.5 for the Civic to 56.2 for the Mazda is a very noticeable difference.

Hi guys, i like ur reviews, this comparison is a very interesting one. I agree with all your criteria but i dont agree with the scores, for example I think the hardware advantages in a car are always more important than the software, you give 1 whole point to the civic for having a few liters more of trunk space and a little more storage, but u only give 0.5 point for important mechanical advantages like the AT, AWD, 3db less road noice etc. it is not fair for the Mazda. The Mazda 3 is really a well rounded product, for me it is at least a tie. BTW here in México the 2023 Mazda 3 turbo is about 21000 USD but the civic touring is nearly 33000! Of course I ordered a Mazda 3 turbo for me and hopefully get it before Christmas 😄

You gave the Civic so many points just for it's touch screen and driver cluster yet personally I hate touch screens in cars, they are dangerous and dirty area's and the driver cluster on Mazda reads better personally. Mazda do a much better job at making a car that still feels like an older car while giving it all the luxury and features of a new car. I mean that's why people prefer the 6 speed over the CVT and rather have a 2L or 2.5L engine to the 1.5L.

The weighting for the features is a little out of whack. Things like a little extra trunk space is weighted like performance. MPG gets a full number despite the fact that no one really cares that the Mazda costs a little more in gas. Hell its 250HP vs 180HP. The Mazda seems to have the best acceleration by far, handling, and AWD. its 3db quieter which means the Honda is twice as loud. It's much sleeker and sexier. I think the interior looks very nice, basically luxury sport whereas the Honda feels like its trying to look like, well, something from the 70s. In 5 years the Civic is going to look awkward inside.
