This is very interesting, I always felt that no matter the paddle the better player would win, but this definitely disproves that. I play with a buddy all the time, he is good and gets everything back (lobs a lot like Adam), but I win about 70% of the time. About 6 months ago his wife got him a really good paddle (like $50 paddle, is that a lot) and I was using a $3 dollar one from Ollies. I struggled to win as consistently for a while as I adjusted to the spin and him getting even more back. This though makes me feel better as a paddle can make a difference, it also makes me want to get a good paddle haha

I've played people who prefer hard bat pips out over thick sponge and spiny pips in rubber. Alot of it is what you get used to. Playing with a thick sponge and spiny rubber actually takes awhile to get used to, but is so much better than the hard bat. I think there's a reason sandpaper players play other sandpaper players because it's like the spin of pips in is canceled out.

here in Brazil we call the sandpaper racket as "madeirão", bcz its basically just wood (madeira in portuguese) and a poor spong on it. but, to be honest, thats not that bad to play with one of them, they can block ANY type of effect that u put on the ball.

Good that you got Butler who is the very best hardbat player in the U.S. (USATT hardbat rating 3164!) But the problem was that he's not necessarily the best hardbat player against sponge. That said, give him a few weeks preparation, and he would probably be. And that's the weakness of this video (yeah, I know - you aren't trying to do solid science here). Neither of these players are practiced in hardbat or sandpaper against sponge and haven't fiddled with optimum approaches or blades. Give Cochran more time to adjust to sandpaper and some time to experiment with different blades and techniques and he'd do a lot better. This isn't a horrible weakness though. Sponge clearly has an advantage once you get past around a 1500-1600 level. I think the highest rating for a full time hardbat player is around 2300. My bet is that Jimmy Butler could have gotten to 2400 or so when younger if he had really trained for it. And congrats on the award. I see that you are now at 394,000 subscribers!! Blew right past 100k!

@AdamBobrow, I am a player that is more offensive in nature with a very solid backhand and forehand topspin slams. I am functional with spins, but need to get better to move to the next level. I'm looking for a new paddle and was looking for some recommendations. I like a faster game, but want to have enough softness to control the spin. I would love to develop some of your snake techniques. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for inspiring me to start playing again. Big love and respect!
