The Shot Heard Around the World - The Battles of Lexington and Concord - Livestream
The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War. The battles were fought on April 19, 1775, in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, within the towns of Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Menotomy (present-day Arlington), and Cambridge. They marked the outbreak of armed conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and Patriot militias from America's thirteen colonies.
On April 18, 1775, 700 men of the British army were sent from Boston to destroy military supplies kept by the Colonial Militia in Concord, Massachusetts. Warnings of the movement of the British Army were sent by riders including Paul Revere and Samuel Prescott. From the Old North Church in Boston, a signal using lanterns was sent "one if by land, two if by sea.” On the morning of April 19, 1775, the British Army was met by the armed Colonial Militia in the town of Lexington (west of Boston). It is unclear who fired the first shot but when it was over, eight militiamen were killed along with one British causality. The British Army continued down the road to the town of Concord where they were met by a much larger Colonial militia force at the North Bridge where the British were turned back. The British Army was harassed by the militia all along the road back to Boston. The American Revolution had begun.
This presentation will discuss the following:
· The French and Indian War (1754-1763) which led the British Parliament to raise taxes on the Colonies to pay for the War
· The slogan “No Taxation without Representation” which became the rallying cry for the Colonists’ grievances against British Authority
· The Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773 which led to Martial Law for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
· The First Continental Congress met on September 5, 1774
· By early 1775, British authority exists around Boston but most of Massachusetts is now in a state of rebellion
· On April 18, 1775, the British army was sent to destroy militia military supplies and re-establish British control; It failed to do so
