Vigilance is much better than precision strike for almost all the game. Until the very late game when precision strike starts to catch up. They should really be vigilancing whenever they move a mech up front to fire. Never take fire on an mech with no guard on it.

36:50 and thats what i love about Battletech, every hit is critically important due to that you lose the equipment. Imagine if Xcom was like that, you lost everything a guy had equipped on death, even if you win the mission. Talk about hardcore mode.

The Spider does the job until you can get a Jenner, a Panther or a Firestarter i didn't even bother with the Locust, it is a death sentence for whoever the pilot is. Now I'm going to train a new pilot while i gear up the Centurion to replace the old crusty and trusty Blackjack

It was this moment that made me buy the game because I _KNEW_ I could do better. I now own both this game and mechwarrior 5, and have stared painting battletech minis. The yogs incompitence is a better salesman than any advertisement could be. (As if I _did_ do better, well in the following mission I bagged an intact king crab. Needless to say, the rest of the campaign was a curbstomping.)

@@Zamandu They can spawn in high difficulty level "Clash of Titans" missions, where two assault mechs are slugging it out and you're called in to help mop up. Unless you mean Victoria's Lostech Crab, then yeah that is to my knowledge unobtainable.

Huh, this was an early lost dekker. My dekker didn't die until way later in a 4-skull mission where he ended up being a bit too close to multiple assault-class mechs at the same time. Up until that point he even was the guy with the least injuries on record and the highest level total.

smithon isnt too hard if you ignore the secondary objectives. if you try to do every objective it can be quite hard, especially if you start attacking from the right, due to the way the scripted truck spawns work.

Yeah i reloaded several saves. My issue was the fact that I had all mediums and heavy mechs. I pretty much brought my regular LRM boat, a modified, outdated LRM boat, a panther, and a Centurion. Knowing literally everything that was going to happen after failing several times helped. If at first you don't succeed, bring a diverse team. If that doesn't work, PPCs and LRMs. ALL OF THEM. NOW. I had actually lost my regular scout pilot the mission beforehand, so I needed to put in someone good at piloting for my panther. Being that the Panther is a scout on steroids, heavy armor, heavy weapon, I put my regular heavy/assault pilot in it. Worked perfectly.

Wait Smithon is a difficulty spike? It's a total cakewalk if you bring a couple LRM boats and a couple tanky Brawlers. I let the LRMs clear out the trucks by sensor locking them, and let the brawlers handly the enemy mechs. Just stand still on the spawn location and let them come to you. Easy.

Talking about strange loadouts: Finally got a K2 but after finding it lacking, I decided to yank out the PPCs and go with a 4x ML, 2x SL and 2x AC5 and sure the range is somewhat shorter now but the overall upgrade on Heat and raw/stability damage more than makes up for it with the right pilot. Never looked back!

This happened to me more or less on this mission lost my scout mech and pilot.. the Turrets are surprisingly nasty (I made exactly the same mistake on this one of going up the middle after the generators (would have been much better in hindsight to swing far to the right and just nuke the 2 turrets directly then take the tanks as they come across)

this mission sort of showed the issues I had with the game, limited to a team of 4 and often having to kill so many more opponents than you can field, granted in this mission its mostly chump vehicles but later having to take on ridiculous numbers of equivalent or better mechs with just 4, limited ammo in some cases and no mid combat healing like in xcom just became a complete chore :( unless you lose half your forces every mission. Its like playing xcom with no medics and every enemy is a sectopod and you have to fight 4 per soldier at the same time with default pistols D:

I'm so miffed that my two favorite 'Mechs aren't in this game: the Raven and Marauder. I know the Raven's is technically not a thing yet, due to the setting (it doesn't enter production until 3048) but the Marauder should be in there, DAMN YOU HARMONY GOLD! Maybe with the recent legal developments we'll get DLC including the Unseen, cuz i love me some Archer and Warhammer too! Edit: RIP Decker, but as they say: Meat is cheap, save the Metal!

By this mission I still hadn't really learned the mechanics of the game, not to mention I had problems with loadouts, I mistakenly installed ammo in torso slots on all mechs.. and the mechs was split up when I jumped into the Prison - not knowing it would be more enemies really - or such heavy ones. The enemy got lucky hits that blew up the ammo and took down my pilots one by one in misplays and just RNG.

I did this mission fine with the quickdraw, centurion, shadowhawk, and vindicator, basically you guys shouldn't have rushed a story mission, I spent basically two months in game prepping

keeping all your mechs in a clump doesnt really achieve much, other than blocking each others shots. those enemy mechs had almost no ammo at the back, if you had spread out in an arc around them, at least one of your mechs would always be able to hit them in the back or sides.

this mission is a pushover, in fact i usually rush it so i can drop my monthly expenses and get Argo. it gets messed up after when they start throwing more and more mechs at you, like i had a 2 skull mission with my 3 star lance where they threw at me at least 8 mechs and 4 insanly powerful cars that had 3 ppc or insane number of SRM or multiple AC/10s. 2 of those things would strip armor of a braced quickdraw with maxed out armor in the forest with 5 evasions and bulwark in one turn. It was just stupid.

The prison break begins in earnest! We left off on a bit of a cliffhanger as dekker's spider jumped into a plethora of angry red blips on the sensors. Some tips based on this episode's footage, episode spoilers ahead! The tragic moment - Let this be a lesson, no matter how defensive your guy is, enough concentrated fire will take it down. When you're ready to move up, move up as a group to make sure the AI doesn't just have one target to focus on. Unfortunately, there was a severe lack of evasion this episode following the spider's fall. Evasion is your biggest help in preventing damage early in the game, and most of these mechs are jump-equipped which makes it very easy to get a full stack of evasion. Jump more often! The heat cost is minimal compared to the damage you will be avoiding. Regarding the Jenner's "two turns" - The Jenner's first sprint in was outside of combat, as you didn't yet have any enemies on your sensors when it ran up. Once it got in visual range (at the end of it's sprint) then the game moved into combat, which goes in initiative order (light mechs go first). You can sometimes use this in your favor as well, but in this case the AI wasn't really able to capitalize on it (fired one ML and missed). As for the use of bulwark, I find it to be a huge new player trap. 50% damage reduction seems good, but when the alternative is 40% higher chance of not being hit AT ALL, it's a difficult sell. A full sprint/jump will give you 4 stacks of evasion which makes it 40% harder for enemies to hit that mech. Evasion also stacks with vigilance and tree/building cover, so you can get the best of both worlds to really prevent damage. By standing still to use bulwark, you are almost guaranteeing that the mech will take damage, and even 50% of what all those enemy mechs can dish out is plenty to kill your team. Get moving!

Bulwark is the most overpowered skill in the game and guarded is far better than evasion. If you ever need to move in LoS of an enemy, that's what Vigilance is for. You should never take an attack on a mech that doesn't have guarded - if you do, it means you screwed something up. The most you can get in the early game is 5 evasion stacks on a pilot specced mechwarrior - you lose an evasion stack everytime you are attacked and a standard mission has you outnumbered 2:1. You get shot twice you're down to easier to hit than a coinflip, and you'll take 100% damage from every shot. The game has you too outnumbered to bully your way through on coinflips without big repair costs. Additionally, you only need to take a little stability damage to lose all your evasive charges, no matter how many you had (and you won't shed stability damage if you jump) - while you need to be meleed or fully knocked down to lose guarded. The only way 50% reduced damage can kill you is if you're skimping on armor - the enemy is running stock builds, player customized mechs will have a lot more armor than stock mechs are designed to fight. What hurt the yogs on this mission specifically is the Blackjack wasting an absurd amount of tonnage on AC2s (hands down the worst weapon in the game) and generally unoptimized mechs and one of the biggest early mess-you-up scripted encounters. The vehicles+mechs+turrets encounter on Weldry is nasty, especially with the 4 turret generators playing decoy - it's only marginally faster to kill 4 turret generators vs killing 4 turrets, but if you go after the generators you have to rush into the killzone. The generators are a trap on that mission.

Using evasion over Bulwark is simple dreadful advice. Jump + Guard is a good combo for a Tanky 'Mech, but you should pretty much never be sprinting as a defensive move, unless it makes you completely untargetable. Two extra evasion pips is dramatically worse than 50% damage reduction in every situation, especially if you remember that you lose evasion as you get shot at. That minor hit chance reduction is quickly stripped away, leaving you vulnerable. To put it simply: 50% damage reduction will save a 'Mech. +20% evasion will not.

@Michael Denman - You can get 4 stacks of evasion every turn, and by the very nature of moving, evasion lets you get out of the line of fire from enemy mechs. Stack it with tree cover or vigilance and you will survive way more hostile fire than just a bulwark setup, guaranteed. I am not saying Bulwark is not a good skill, it has it's uses, I just think it sets a bad gameplay habit of not moving when you should almost always be moving. It also does not stack with vigilance, or tree cover, and doesn't remove instability like bracing does.

@Daton Kallandor Evasion does have the concerns you brought up, but in your example you assume that the player will not utilize some kind of cover (or vigilance) and will expose themselves to excessive hostile fire with just one mech (RIP Dekker). 4-5 evasion + tree cover or 4-5 evasion + vigilance will beat bulwark any day of the week, especially when the fact that you moved means you can reposition yourself outside of LOS from some of the enemies. If you run a full lance of highly evasive mechs (jump jets help this immensely) and utilize cover/vigilance/brace as needed, you will find your pilots getting injured way less often, and your mechs getting exposed less often as well. Those incidental headshots from enemies are a lot less common when you actually have some evasion.

Alot of these missions are kinda "fake" in their difficulty. as soon as you know whats going to happen its piss easy :/ mainly defence of wherever where you can lose on turn 2 if you dont realise whats happening cause its really stupid

This is true mostly for the story missions, you can generally know what kind of mechs you will face on non story missions, up to 1 skull is L mechs, up to 2 you see L and M mechs, from there you get L M and H mechs, and most likely at or after 4 skulls you start to get A mechs.

I had an escort mission where the enemy mechs spawned and instantly vaporized half my escortees on the same turn they appeared. Literally zero counter-play available. I was just a weeee bit pissed.

You can get some dodgy ratings at times though. It's part of the game. I just had one early on in my current play through, within first 5 missions after the tutorial ones. I got one of the missions where the primary objective was to take out a specific enemy mech + kill any escorts as a secondary. The mission rating was 1 skull. I was fielding a Vindicator, Blackjack, Firestarter and Spider. I got into the mission and during the very first turn I walk forward to see a Hunchback hiding in a large hilly forest to the East plus a Vindicator and Shadow Hawk to the north. In the 2nd turn I spotted two mechs on long range sensors towards the West that later turned out to be a Panther and a 2nd Shadowhawk. And on the 4th turn the target mech walks into range from the North and that turns out to be a Jagermech. I somehow managed to win that one with very little damage aside from the Vindicator losing it's non PPC arm, but that was well beyond any usual 1 skull mission and I was well outgunned early on. Overall the enemy had about twice my tonnage. I was sorely tempted to withdraw on turn 2 with 5 enemy mechs on the scopes and had my Firestarter not managed to jump behind the hunchback, breach the right torso and knock out the AC20 before the Hunchback got to shoot with it, I would have bailed out turn 3. Hunchback losing it's main gun probably swung the mission in my favor as I was then able to run into the forested hills without fear of an AC20 crippling my mechs and spend the rest of the mission hiding behind hill tops and limiting how much the enemy could see me whilst taking focusing them down one at a time. The ratings can go the other way as well. I've also gotten one base defense mission before that was rated 2 1/2 stars but enemy force had all of 2 locusts, 3 scorpion tanks, 2 galleon tanks and 2 striker tanks.

Also some missions are bugged and will be unfair right from the get go, so your only option is a reload and hope the RNG placement is not right on your dropzone, especially given Dropships are viable targets unlike Jumpships, so your poor old Leopard would be under fire just dropping you in, can your pilots not see the 2 lances of mechs sitting just over the hill as they come in and think "maybe should drop off the team somewhere a little less trappy"

My "favorite" I've run across so far was a "don't let the dude escape" mission where the dude in question spawned within sprinting distance of his exit point and got to move first. What, exactly, was one meant to do there?
