if it's just a task of movement, this works fine. I generally base my movement in combination of ranges. short ranges: M.L., SRM, AC-20 up to 9 hexes med ranges: L.L., GAUSS, LRM, PPC, AC-5 up to 20 hexes. long range: AC-2, E-LRM, indirect fire LRM, HV-AC, Caseless AC up to 30 hexes. keeping my movement so the units can each apply their primary weapons against a target together. thus, a light or medium mech will need to advance further due to the shorter ranges of the weapons they carry. while heavy and assault can be a bit further back due to the longer ranges of their weapons. so a light/med mech can be approx 10 hexes ahead of a heavy/aslt mech. they are both effective against targets that are 5 to 10 hexes in front of your short range. or 15 to 20 hexes in front of your hvy/aslt mechs. you never want to get into melee ranges. that usually means the destruction of both mechs.

Yeah I have another video in mind about how to manage range when you have a mixed-range force (basically my rule of thumb is that when your close-combat brawlers move to their 3-hex short range you should default to moving your long-range fighters to their short range of usually 7, but until then stay at 14 with the ranged fighters).

Hence why I have a Lance of melee mechs (Berserker, two Nightskies and an Axeman) for that purpose.

@schaddenkorp6977 personally, if I'm in close combat and physical attack range - I've messed up. I generally keep opponents at long range and occasionally medium range. add in specialized ammunition and spotters, it ruins most opponents.

@@bruced648 Interesting style! I like long range fighting too, big fan of the Falconer and the Catapult 2K2. It's hard to pull off in BV balanced games though

Moving in formation is really important for sure, up to a point. You want to have your brawlers(Battlemaster or Thunderbolt for EG, stuff with lots of short ranged firepower) screening your snipers(Awesome, Longbow, etc.) and getting to grips with the enemy. Unless they are almost entirely short range... Then hang back and use your range to your advantage. Tactics for a balanced force are largely dependant upon enemy composition...

Also a good time for the lighter units to flank out, get some distance, and be give your opponent more than one vector to look out for.

Couldn't faster units taking a longer path along the flanks and arriving to target at the same time also be viable?
