Considering how the Clans treated.. well everything back then... none of them where going to learn anything from any lost battles against the IS. The warriors that survived these lost battles where treated as pariahs and outcasts and their experiences where ignored. They where simply failures and you dont listen to failures. Wich in hindsight was ofcourse a gigantic failure, leading to a certain smoke jaguar pilot to betray his clan wich ultimately led to the destruction of the smoke jaguars and jadda jadda jadda.

And those where only the ones involved with the inner sphere invasion. Back in the clan homeworlds the situation was even worse, their culture so toxic that it eventually lead to the home clans to basically evict (and with evict i mean trying to destroy) all clans that had come into contact with inner sphere culture cause they saw these clans as "tainted" and corrupt and thus no longer aligned with kerenskys vision. MWO failed to sell me on the Marauder II, however BTA 3062 showed me the light. The jump Jets really put it on another level, (pun intended) from my other perennial favorite, the king crab. It's easy to say those six tons are a waste, Until you realize how many opportunities they give you to actually fire the rest of your weapons instead of having your shot blocked by Terrain time and time again. And thanks to its superb Heat management, you can jockey for position and still fire most if not all of your weapons even while maneuvering. It won't depose the original Marauder as my favorite, but I can comfortably call it my number II.

The early Dragoons, especially some of their mechs, felt a little bit like “turn this up to 11”. The designs seemed to be…generously…extremely niche and difficult to deploy effectively. They were simply unique, and huge, and there were five regiments with crack pilots. But, the quality of the equipment wasn’t a force multiplier…it was something that training and superior numbers could compensate for. But, the Marauder II is a beast. The design acknowledges the low mobility and responds with a main armament brace of long range energy weapons. This allows the mech to take challenging shots at extreme range while relentlessly, if slowly, advancing towards an objective. Someone clearly took some notes from the Awesome. The additional capability the M2 brings is jump movement. The design pays a huge mass cost to get a tiny Jump 3 movement. But, in many terrain conditions assault mechs get caught slogging through forests, mud, or something else. This leaves them vulnerable to being simply left behind if an enemy chooses to tactically withdraw and then outflank them. But, jump 3 is enough that the M2 can hop-hop-hop through most terrains fast enough that, it is possible to kite them around, but you just can’t with confidence break contact. The PPCs allow one to keep harassing an enemy trying to outmaneuver it. The M2 is paying a big mass cost for the capability and slightly undergunned as a result. But, it takes the standard vulnerability of assault mechs and adjusts it to at least a stalemate. With all-energy weapons, a ton of heat sinks, and massive armor, you get the classic Zombie mech. I’ve played on the tabletop against them. The number of salvos multiple mechs are required to devote to taking a M2 out leads to multiple heat shutdown risks and even tasks ammunition supply, which almost never happens. I once dedicated 2 heavy and a medium to killing it, shutdown one overheating…I knocked off an arm, crippled a leg, knocked it over, and hit the engine. But…not quite. The pilot somehow managed to leverage it upright and kept hopping forward with the remaining two jump jets like a titanic pogo-stick. It just kept firing. They’re effective because the design doesn’t try to win. The M2 doesn’t intend to tear apart the enemy like a King Crab. It focuses on stalemate, and turns it up to 100 tons. There is no clear counter-tactic, you simply choose to leave or pay the attrition cost for contesting their objective. It’s the perfect 3025 tech assault mech, and it’s appropriate that the Dragoons were slowly able to replace the questionable salvaged and leftover junk the Clans originally assigned to them. There are some things about BT lore that are a bit absurd. But, if you were trying to fight in an Imp, or heaven forbid an Annihilator…yeah, it’s easy to imagine a Zeta commander having a sit down with Jamie and saying “Dude, you cannot expect us to fight with this. We need something like…this.” And he would sketch out exactly the Marauder II. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t originally by intent, but it is believable.

Wow, I was unaware of the 5B. It fixes everything wrong with the 5A. Standard engine, double heat sinks and a Gauss Rifle? No wonder the Smoked Kitties had a lousy day at Luthien! Atlas level armor, jump jets, three main weapons with range that could almost rival the clans and enough cooling to make it work? That has to make it one of the top 5 IS assault mechs during the invasion era. Marginally less long-distance killing power than the Nightstar (2 erppc and 1 gauss vs 1 erppc and 2 gauss) but with a ton more armor and jump jets. Dang.

Gucci design that works, good luck getting your hands on one with most command budgets, salvage wise these things hard to crack in my experience, most of the time you have to slag them. Then the other side is going to fight you to keep what is left. A fine mech but it wouldn't be my first pick, the NightStar even a downgraded model is just as good least in a direct fire support, or sniper role. I will admit the 6D variant appeals to me, if you could configure it more towards two Snub PPCs and instead of the Snub and Light, maybe take out some ammo or the jumpjets or the CASE it would be a nasty brawler that can lay down some suppressing fire with the RAC 5 as it moves in, which I think this designs is asking for. I've seen the 4H variant in a dust up with pirates, lot of rockets and a nasty gauss good assassination mech took two mediums and a assault out of the fight. Thankfully it was brought down, before it could reposition to plink with the heavy gauss. All and all a good mech, despite the price if I ever get my hands on one wouldn't sell it...well maybe trade it for a NightStar, but that is just personal taste.

@AzrealMaximus
10 ай бұрын
You are correct, it was during their service to kurita when that plan was hatched. It was more the brainchild of Warlord Samsonov, who also had a beef with Tetsuhara for believing in the old ways of bushido. Takashi had admonished Grieg Samsonov not to let the Dragoons leave the combine (subtle phrase to don't fuck this up) so that's when another DCMS officer was appointed as...lets call him a commissar, to over see the Ryuken regiments. This commissar was a sword of light veteran which placed him higher in the caste/samurai system. Not by prowess or loyalty, but by deviance and treachery. Anyway the Ryuken learned the Dragoon/Clan ways of fighting, that's why on Misery they were fairly matched, until someone on the kurita side broke the circle of equals and it turned into a melee. We know the rest of the battle....upon hearing the news of the misery debacle (including the loss of the space station Hyperion by that commissar) kurita offered his personal garden to Samsonov....to perform seppuku for his failure and loss of men and battlemechs. I can't remember when or how the commissar died, but I believe it was on Misery by the hands of the whole black widow company, melted him to slag. Remembered from the late 80s.
@Spore9996
9 ай бұрын
@@AzrealMaximus Quite close! It was actually the Dragoons side that broke the circle / informal dueling agreement as a deliberate trap set by Jaime Wolf to cause the Ryuken MechWarriors to become enraged and charge onto an ice glacier the Dragoons' engineers had tunneled under and sabotaged with planted explosives - when detonated, this created an instant crevasse which quickly became a mass grave for Ryuken BattleMechs and MechWarriors. Jaime Wolf knew it was the best way to deal with the Ryuken, and even then, the battle continued after the massive casualties the Ryuken had suffered, and came close to wiping out the Dragoons. The commissar you talk about was Jerry Akuma, Minobu Tetsuhara's former second-in-command during both of their Sword of Light service days (and whose last name is "evil spirit" in Japanese; real subtle writing on that one). He'd helped engineer the downfall of the Dragoons with Grieg Samsonov purely to hurt Minobu Tetsuhara (who he'd hated to a huge degree since serving under him, as Akuma absolutely despised the concept of bushido and honour among warriors that compelled Minobu to prevent Jaime Wolf from dying in their mutual first encounter) - he was hunted down by then-Dragoons MechWarrior Dechan Fraser in his Shadow Hawk at the government skyscraper his office was in (on the world of An Ting), ironically saving Akuma's life from an ISF plant who'd decided to kill Akuma as well. Akuma escaped into an elevator which had its cables severed by Fraser's lasers, and fell ten floors into a heap of debris and flame - and was then slagged further by Fraser's 'Mech.

A big part of what made the Marauder II so powerful in the Succession Wars is that other assault mechs of that time were mostly very badly designed. One of my most favorite Mech Lance combinations in MW5, is the Marauder Family. 2 Marauder II and 2 normal Marauders. One with an Ballistic and one with an Energy Weapon on it's back. My Personal Marauder mostly have only one PPC or ER-PPC on it's back, but 2 Large Pulse Lasers + 2 Med Lasers or 2 ER Large Lasers and two med Pulse lasers in it's arms... depending on what Weapons I can get in the Game. ^^ And naturally switching all normal Heatsinks against double.

Part of the reason for them shifting to local production was also because after their first couple resupply missions, the atmosphere in clan space was starting to get hot and they almost got forced to come back and start prepping for invasion, so they decided to stop going home.

I always liked how the Marauder 2 was just the Marauder with its perceived weaknesses addressed. You want it faster? It jumps now. Don't think it's durable enough? Up-armoured to Atlas levels. Think it needs more firepower? You get one new PPC and enough heat sinks to remove worry for a competent pilot.

I liked the b-roll of the Marauders stomping the hell out of the frozen wastes and the part of the "Blood and Iron" section. I think something like this should be done more often especially when the 'mech has an assigned role within a lance and roll with other 'mechs that they're usually seen with in a unit. Good job on the video.

The Marauder and the Marauder 2 are some of my most enjoyable mechs to play in MWO and MW5. There is an air about them about their classic nature in both games, both are also great machines, maybe not the best in any one area but they are flexible, and more importantly, they work. There weren't any teething issues to overcome akin to other mechs that struggled to find a place. Also, I am generally a fan of any mech that isn't humanoid just due to it is nice to see some flexing of artistic skill.

The Marauder and Marauder 2 are my all time favorite mechs in their respective classes. Personally I think they're a bit underrated. You always hear about the Atlas or the Awesome or even the Highlander but many forget that Marauder 2 is just as capable as any other assault mech if not more so. And in a galaxy of unreliability a reliable mech like the Marauder 2 is ALMOST worth any price. I mean its literally as tough as an Atlas, can "fly" stays cool with almost any weapon configuration and it can fire behind itself! Not to mention it comes with 3 quirks. 3! With no negative quirks in most of its configurations! How could you not want one?! And its chassis! Oh it's chassis! I challenge any of you to find a mech that's even HALF as sexy as this prime machine. I'll wait. Talk about legs for days am I right? If there is one thing that nobody can deny its that the Marauders got style. And that's pretty underrated too. Thanks for covering my favorite mech! I've been waiting for this for awhile now

I didnt know about the Marauder II until I saw it being used by several characters in the Mechwarrior Dark Age miniature game. It that game it was designed based on the Project Phoenix redesigns. Its arguably better designed than the original Marauder. Compared to the Marauder 3D the Marauder II 4A Its much better armored, has many more Single Heat Sinks to fire most of its weapons, and adds Jump Jets. The Marauder II is just fairly solid. Its not perfect, but its tough, mobile, doesnt require ammunition, and almost heat-neutral. Its unlike many of the other Wolf's Dragoons battlemechs. Perhaps because it was an upgrade to a fairly solid Marauder instead of a flawed Star League era design? The upgraded MAD-5A model is a mixture of of technology levels. It upgrades from PPCs to Extended Range PPCs and exchanges the Large Laser to an LBX AC-10. It oddly doesnt use Double Heat Sinks which adds a new drawback as now it overheats much more often. This model is much closer to an upgraded Marauder 1. The final Marauder II(C) is very fast for a 100ton assault mech. Normally this would cause crippling drawbacks, but thanks to mounting an Extralight Engine and Clan weaponry its still potent. This is more like whats to be expected of one kind of Clan mech, high speed, high speed, and relatively low firepower similar to the Executioner/Gladiator. Overall the Marauder II and its variants have low firepower for high mobility in an Assault mech. Those Assault Grade Jump Jets are very heavy at 2 tons per jet. This is an issue shared with the famous Highlander.

Very well made video overall Red. As said in the live chat I was paying close attention to your coverage of The Battle of Misery as it is my favourite battle in Battletech. You didn't put as much detail in it like you did for Hesperus, and your reasons are sound for why. Still saddens me that it wasn't given as much attention. Nevertheless, the MADII and all its variants are a ferocious machine of war that would send shudders of terror into those who view it coming across hills in lined formations. A battlemech that first began with the Dragoons, that died with the Dragoons, and are now back in the regiments of the House States. A remarkable workhorse that won't be disappearing anytime soon. Bravo for this video 👏👏👏

Really makes you wanna see/run a MAD II stuffed full of Clantech in all aspects (clan endo, ferro, XL etc.) to see just how much more fearsome it can get rather than just one or two bits of Clantech. Uptonning the Marauder to 100 tons just makes more sense than an extra 10 like the IIC. Maybe there's an actual variant like this, but I don't pay attention to stuff after the Jihad/FedCom War

I still prefer the 75t Marauders. The sequel takes up the same principals of good firepower and redlining capability- but time sees all sides of the family receive substantial love. I do not see the Marauder II as an upgrade, much like it's clan sister in the MADIIC, as the original rides a Fibonacci sequence of "2/3" specs that make it uniquely deadly. 75 tons, 16 HS/DHS, 2:1 Energy:Ammofed primary systems ratio, range overlap, ability to exploit accuracy bonuses from short/medium range, and standard movement. It's far more compatible with XL engines for massive weapons payloads. The Timberwolf and Marauder II made expensive, but worthy alternatives, the Clan Marauder is as good as an Assault Mech can be; but they could not- even in 3151, supplant the original. Even the odd members of the family like the Nightstar proved that uptonning can help a Mech do some tasks better, but at significant cost for something that handles a massive number of tasks the way a Marauder does. Thanks for another beast of a video Red!

Putting three Binary Lasers on my Marauder II in MW 5: Mercs was both a good and a bad idea. Tons of damage but I had to downgradw the Medum Pulse lasers to medium lasers to fit 13 double heat sinks and generally had to chain fire the BLs to keep the heat down. I had also shoved cooling upgrades into it but an Alpha still put me at around 40% heat give or take 2%. Still great for chopping heads with a quick triple shot. Though getting the mech itself was no small feat, had to kill a lance of Dragoons to get it in the first place. But it allowed me to draw even with the Bounty Hunter later, took out BH's Marauder with an Alpha strike,two melees and a DFA but the Marauder's core went crit and was just enough to engine kill my Marauder II. My lance managed to clean up the rest of BH's lance to win the mission.
