Join us on another native habitat restoration project as we eradicate the non-native invasive species from a private landowners farm. The total project area was approx. 65 acres of a mostly forested landscape in Eastern, Ohio. This landowner purchased the property recently and took action developing a management plan, and securing EQIP grant funding to bring in professional help to correct the mismanaged areas of the farm. The past owners harvested timber without managing the non-native invasive species which resulted in degraded habitat and forest conditions. Various invasive species from around the world had backfilled after the timber harvest choking out all native flora life. Invasives had formed impenetrable thickets totaling many acres. Through mechanical clearing with small machinery, chainsaws and selective spot spraying we aim to have the native plant community back to good health in 3 years. In the United States today, you have to actively manage what is growing on your land or you risk loosing the native eco-system and its ability to support wildlife.
Invasives eradicated on this episode: Tree of heaven, autumn olive, multi-flora rose, oriental
bittersweet, bush honey suckle, Japanese Barberry
