@@majorborngusfluunduch8694 Within months of the German acoustic torpedo, yes. But you need to drop it close enough to hear the sub. Limited speed, limited range. (A U-Boat could outrun one on the surface with ease, but that was not known to German sub captains.) and having other ordnance could make the try foolish.) It’s safe against surface vessels by having a minimum depth it will not rise above. So you need to “catch” a sub by other methods. And while a ship is not endangered by a Mark 24 “mine”, the weapon goes for the loudest sounds. So having a ship with ASDIC to find the sub is not gonna work well. So you need sonobuoys or MAD detectors.

@advorak8529

Well, as a submarine tender she’d try to stay out of air coverage - especially and this clearly is within easy air cover from the US. As a raider she’d not be drawing attention like that - WW1 had shown commerce raiders and auxiliary merchant cruisers were a force to be reckoned with but not a match to a warship (see HMS Rawalpindi; their initial salvo managed to scratch paint with one shell as they were rather close … but that was it). On the other hand, if it IS a raider, do not get too close … Kormoran and Sydney say hi! As to nearby submarines - this is pretty early in the war (for the USA), when there was no blackout, all navigation lights running as if it was peacetime, Miami offering 6 miles of bright lighting and neon outlining any and every vessel hugging the coastline and any anti-submarine patrolling was so regular you could set your watch by it. From January 1942 the US east cost offered the Second Happy Times for the U-boats with rich pickings and no meaningful defense. In the first half of 1942, more than 360 ships (and at least 129 of them tankers) were sunk on the coast from Canada to the Caribbean, totalling around 2,250,000 gross tons. 2 per day, every day, on average. So yes, beware of submarines. Note there were never more than 6 U-Boats there at any one time. Now imagine there had been 20 or 30 …

Not sure if its simulated but wouldn't be surprised; Might be worth reading up on the Williamson maneuver which allows you to return to your reciprocal course. Put the helm over opposite to your final turn to move the pivot point of the vessel aft...when the vessel is 60 degrees off your initial course put the helm hard over to the opposite side. Midships rudder when approx 20 deg off final course more or less depending on rate of turn. You will be on the same track but in reverse. Its a maneuver usually used for recovering people from the sea and was used during world war two. Keep up the content.

The u-boat commanders were both pretty dumb attacking in daylight and from the same direction as well as staying in on the surface so long but this was basically the tutorial. Hopefully the AI won't be so dumb during campaign. Hopefully also later u-boats will be equipped with BOLD which will test your interpretation on the data challenging you to work out which is real and which is the decoy. It would be great if they developed a U-boat version and allow you to tie the games together for pvp battles.

This game feels really intense, at the same time, if you are even semi-competent, a single or pair of uboats basically has no chance. You shoot the periscopes till they dive, at that point you just run circles over them, as they cant make a firing solution without periscope they are basically harmless at that point, you just have to see how fast you can make a good DC run
@advorak8529
9 ай бұрын
The submarine AI is pretty aggressive and fairly reckless. If there is a historic progression, you will find fun bits like Bold (SBT), Sieglinde (Bold but moving), or even Siegmund. You will find that depth charging blinds you, especially your active sonar, as you produce a lot of swirling and moving water that reflects your ping for minutes. You will start to run out of depth charges and the sinking speed (4.4m/s early to 7m/s late) means not only you have to lead the target a lot if it is deep, but also that the target, hearing the DCs being dropped, can evade. A DC must explode within ~6 metres to fatally damage a sub. Otherwise it can take hours and hundreds of DCs to not even sink the sub - 260 DCs in the case of U-427 (according to its war diary) in 1945. Your sonar cannot look straight down, far from it, this increases the time a deep diving submarine has to evade your DC run - unless you have another source of position data. Then add the blessings of GNAT (Falke and Zaunkönig), FAT, LUT, and torpedoes intentionally running in a circle a short distance after launch so that you have a high chance of driving through its path … Never mind the Unterwasser-Ortungsgerät Nibelung, using doppler shift to detect radial velocity and with 3 very short pings (very hard to pick up and impossible to locate at the time) spaced a minute apart could come up with a torpedo solution for a homing torpedo or a LUT (running a ladder pattern, estimated 95% hit chance on a 60m vessel), launch it from 50m under water and hit the target. They were much harder to detect and much quieter … you would have a lot of fun there.
@xxxm981
9 ай бұрын
@@advorak8529 I know those things, but they are not in the game from any of the gameplay i have seen. Your sonar works even going flank speed, you loose the contact going over it but only for like 10 seconds. The only thing from your post i could actually observe is the lag time for the DC to geth down there, but they seem pretty quick and you do have that mechanical computer for your to calculate the optimal drop time.

In my opinion, it's better (and more realistic) to let the plotter take care of the plot. The captain is not going to be making marks on the plot during an attack run. Let the crew handle that and maintain situational awareness by using the info the crew supplies you.
