@Deborah Faith Thompson in my prayers too Deborah and offerings!!! My husband and I are the first-generation of practicing/faithful Catholics in our families and just when we think its so great, it GETS BETTER! It truly gets better each day (of course there are lots of trials in life too and part of Catholicism i.e. "the world will hate you" etc. But it has been the GREATEST JOY of our lives!!! Also today is St. Faustina's feast day and even if you don't know her I would just offer a prayer to God and ask for her friendship/intercession because she is just that amazing as a saint and friend in heaven to get to know -- even just "St. Faustina, help me to get to know you better!" - Love, Deborah!

I must add that the (now deceased) bishop who gave the homily at the 2019 Baccalaureate Mass was rather woke and berated the students on racism. With all due respect, have either of you been to TLM? The Church's liturgy in the TLM has endured for 2000 years -- its timeless, reverent, all about our Lord in the Eucharist, and mostly silent. I don't know how they would come together? But please, educate me if you have an idea of how that could happen?

@@patty378 I’ve seen it in Augusta, GA. I don’t mean to say that we can “merge” TLM and loud charismatic worship. It’s more the spirit if it all. There are devout charismatic Catholics in Augusta and also devout TLM folks, and they aren’t competing groups, instead they have unity. I’m charismatic and love TLM, many folks around here are like that. It hard for me to articulate, but I can just feel here how “charismatic” and “traditional” are not opposing groups or ideas. They fit together perfectly (when under the Lordship of Jesus.)

Listening to Fr. Ripperger (the exorcist) praying in tongues scares me. He points out that speaking in tongues isn't like the movies, it's not speaking in nonsense, it's speaking in other languages you've never studied, ones you have no way of knowing. Now there's a possibility that this is the Holy Spirit working through you in the same way as He did through the Pentecost, and if this is the case, GOD BLESS YOU, because you are pure of spirit and free of sin. I worry for myself, as I know my own sin, that it would be a spirit less than that of the Holy Spirit. Just food for thought.

Great stuff Matt, as usual. Regarding celebrities converting to Catholicism(Peterson maybe, Lebouf) We should praise and celebrate all sincere conversions. However, and this is something I have struggled with, we should not treat a celebrity conversion the same way a sports fan celebrates their team getting the best free agent or coach:) I am not saying you are doing this Matt, just something that me and I am sure that others struggled with.

There is so much misunderstanding about what is Catholic and its the fault of the teachers. The Church is made up of many different charisms and ministries by which the Church is built up. The Holy Spirit imparts many special graces called charisms by which he makes the faithful fit and ready to undertake various tasks and offices for the renewal and building up the Church. (CCC 698, 798). You can read more about charisms in the Catechism. It is in CCC 799-801.

On “divisions that don’t need to exist”: I think the hierarchy, authority, and structure of the Catholic Church allows me freedom in spirituality. Because there are “rails” on this train, I am free to express my spirituality in a myriad of ways. I can also give that freedom to others. The church is universal and I’m not afraid of the Mass in India looking different than the Mass in Montana. I’m not afraid of the cultural differences in Mass because I know there is a clear liturgical structure, a scaffolding. I understand that we will make mistakes and “color outside the lines” sometimes, but there are defined lines in the Catholic Church! I trust God to lead us and I trust that we will “straighten out” when needed, even though it will take time. It allows me to release the clutch of control, release my desire to have everything look and sound exactly as I see fit. But it’s not a licentious “all roads lead home” attitude, it’s merely freedom operating within structure. Does that make sense?

I have such an uncomfortable feeling about the charismatic practices of tongues or praying over others in "another language". I've had it forced on me (someone praying over me in her prayer "language") and this same person also randomly gives "prophesies" about people. It really rubs me the wrong way. Her explanation is "well I don't feel like its coming from me so it is coming from God". Is it not the height of hubris to pronounce to others that you are being spoken through by God when you aren't filtering that through anyone but your own feelings? This might not be the universal teaching (for lack of a better word) of the charismatic movement but it's what I've experienced. And it was basically just a lighter version of what I experienced as a protestant (that's way more intense).

As an alumni (student from '12-'16) I will say that the only option was to be closeted on campus. It wasn't even a question. I'm continually surprised by how many of my classmates come out in their post grad years. There's a lot of pain attached to that - and a particular resentment towards those 4 years. And to an extent, I get it. Had there been any type of support network or discipleship community like Fr. Dave is describing back then, I think it would have made a huge difference for those students. College is a confusing time as we navigate growth into adulthood. As Christians we can't carry things in isolation. Just acknowledging there ARE queer students on campus is a big step - and creating a space and seat at the table for them is so necessary. I'm glad to hear that there's at least something. I pray that will continue to be fostered.

Agreed. The conservative side tends to lump all anti-racism, anti LGBT discrimination folks into the “woke” crowd. In actuality there is definitely a crowd of liberal Marxists trying to push their agenda, but many of the problems they bring up are actual problems. White supremacy is a real issue where I live and conservative Catholics are missing that convo a lot by writing off everything that sounds remotely liberal as “Marxist wokeism.” It’s nuanced. We have to parse out the truth within the movement and answer those concerns that are legitimate.
