Great video again guys! But there is one thing I'd like to add - originally the Bayern Kurve rides were able to go in both directions at full speed. That the ones in the US don't is likely just due to the park operating rules or maybe due to modifications done to the rides later on. There is no technical reason why it wouldn't work. Depending on the type of power pickup there may be a limit, especially with the modifications done later on. (I think to remember that the original power rails were just naked metal strips with bulky contact brushes going along them. They were almost indestructible - nut not protected from accidentally being touched. The modern ones, which are brass rails in a plastic C shaped profile are much more delicate, especially with the train rumbling around on the steel track. Maybe that brought the limitation. The one at Kennywood with the "wire on a pole" must have some kind of slip rings as well, as the pole spins when the ride is in motion. Otherwise you would wind up the cable around the pole... ;-) But having those slip rings in a more protected setting on a part that just rotates is easier to handle than sliding around in those power rails.

Fortunately, we had a Bayernkurve here in Brazil. It opened in mid 70's in Playcenter, a former amusement park located in São Paulo. Initially it operated as "Grenoble '68", because of the Grenoble Winter Olympic Games of 1968, but later was renamed and reopened as "Concorde", inspired by the British Airways/Air France supersonic plane. It closed in mid 80's and was sold. Today can be found being renovated by a travelling amusement park.

I *loved* the Swiss Bob (the name I knew it best as) back in the day ... First one I ever went on was the 2nd version at Great Adventure. I get why it's no longer there, but I still miss it. The more recent one (relatively, anyway) that I remember was dubbed "Power Jet" and was at Seaside Heights NJ, on Casino Pier, for some time. I think it was removed before Superstorm Sandy obliterated the back-half of the pier, but not by much. Being at the beach instead of a theme park, that version had longer runtimes. I miss that one more than the SFGA one. Being in the front always gave me a strange sensation, as the ride would pick up speed long after you went over the hill; you feel the acceleration just as you *climb* the hill, and slow down as you go over it. The more natural sensation always came in the middle-rear portion, and the back somewhat reminded me of being in the back of a coaster. I never saw a version with a structure in the back; that kind of appearance for me was always indicative of a 'Musik Express' ride. I'm more likely to go to Kennywood for 'Steel Curtain' (I live in Eastern PA), but I would *love* to ride the Bayern Curve once again. Considering the similarities, I'd love to see the Musik Express get featured for the next video. Honestly, I'm curious which came first: "Musik Express" or "Himalaya". Seems like a half-dozen manufacturers made this one over the years, and I've seen the number of cars vary among 24, 22, 20, and (I think) 18.

This was an original flat ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It was called Swiss Twist and later Sierra Twist. It was one of the first rides we’d hit up when we’d go to the park. It had to do with the location. At the time the flat rides were the first ones you’d see so it made sense. I miss Swiss Twist! When it was there it represented a very good time in my life so I will always remember that. Magic Mountain removed it due to mechanical issues… at least that’s what they say. You can see where it used to be. They call it pistachio park now. It’s just a walk thru circular area with paintings on the wall where the curve hill used to be. Funny though. The sign that hangs by the area is still there that now says Sierra Territory. Used to say Swiss Twist and then Sierra Twist. The very first time riding it I was 7 going on 8 years old. I barely made the height limit and I remember how scary it was when it picked up speed as it tilted on the track. The operator used to say “If at anytime you feel uncomfortable please raise your hand and I will stop the ride” I don’t think I could raise my hand but I was screaming for it to stop. Of course later it became a favorite and a classic. It’s a shame very few remain in existence today. I suppose the maintenance to keep it going and the ride attendance has something to do either way why we don’t see these as common flat rides in our parks anymore.

If I recall correctly, the Wild Bull @ Carowinds had wooden cutouts around the ride, my cousin made me ride it all the time back in the 80's and that startup horn got me every time lol. Also, the ride had the cone in the middle of the ride and the cable was attached to the back of the train. Canada's Wonderland also used to have a Bayern Curve, I remember that model had a small tunnel so it didn't have a center cone.

The main differences are that it has cars connected in a full circle, seating is side by side, and there's no rail as the vehicles have tires instead. The variation is called Snow Bobs or Alpine Bobs or something similar. The main change for this one is that it's a floating, there's no rail or tires underneath, allowing the ride to easily bank over hills.

I'm actually surprised a very similar set of rides didn't make it in this video (or maybe a future episode down the line), the Himalaya/Music Express/Matterhorn rides are very common and are a fairly similar idea. There's also the Herschell/Chance "Flying Bobs" which are similar to those but with swinging gondolas instead of the locked ones. There's also a kiddie ride version of those called the Mini Himalaya which are much smaller and nowhere near as fast, those were extremely popular at a now defunct childrens indoor amusement park chain called "Jeepers" under the name "Yak Attack". Also if you're looking for more ideas for future episodes in general I feel like the Scrambler by Eli Bridge (And the competition like the Sizzler by Wisdom for example) because it's such a classic ride you see some form of at almost any carnival or fair and a lot of parks have them as well. And also the Zipper by Chance, I don't know of too much of a park presence but on any travelling show in the US you'll have a hard time NOT seeing one there.

Great video! The Bayern Kurve at Miracle Strip was my first Schwarzkopf ride ever, glad to see it lives on! Just curious, any truth the word I heard that Gertslauer's Bavarian Express is meant to be a modern version of the Kurve? I couldn't get any data on how fast it runs or if it's similar enough in ride experience...

There is a little mistake, there was 2 Metroliners, one at Liseberg and later at Skyline Park and one was from 1989 to 2015 at Hansa Park. The Hansa Park model was very good, because it runs vorwards and backwards in the Programm. But the Bayern Kurve is much better

It's really confusing, any idea where the Snabbtaget from Liseberg went after it closed?

@@SchwarzkopfFanboy Apparently Skyline Park in southern Germany (not far from the original Schwarzkopf site by the way). I can't tell for sure whether it is the same unit, but I know for certain that the one at Skyline Park and Hansa-Park did exist at the same time. Therefore they can't be the same unit. ;-) Hansa-Park 1989-2015 Liseberg 1989-1992 -> Skyline Park 1999-2016 (?)

I think I remember one of these being at Kings Dominion years ago. It was on the side of the mountain that would become Volcano.

These are really this rare?! Whaaaat?! I know I've seen quite a few of them though i think some were knockoffs. Definitely saw a real one in new jersey as a kid though it was right next to this little crazy mouse esque coaster that used the bobsleds as well woah

Is there the possibility for these rides to have an automatic cycle instead of using manual controls? This could solve some of the operation issues with the other models

I saw a video recently from a guy who went to a fair in Europe and they had one. Except this one went insanely fast. Much faster than the ones shown in this video.

Small correction, it's really miniscule. 8:00 You claim only one was built, but there were at least two models of this ride (that I know of): "Snabbtåget" in Liseberg was operated from 1989 - 1992. "Metroliner Express" in Hansa Park was operated from 1989 - 2015 (renamed to El Paso Express in 2006). "Skyline Express" in Skyline Park was operated from 1999 - 2017. Sadly they had issues with overheating of the motors, so it often had to close. Eventually spare parts were unavailable and they were closed for good.

I saw Bayern Kurve and I had to click because it's a ride in the park I grew up going to. Then you said Kennywood and I was like "THAT"S MY PARK!" Side note: They didn't mention that the one in Kennywood was taken out for a period of time and was replaced by the Whiplash before bringing it back.

I rode this ride at the old Riverside Park in the 1970s. It was a great ride. Too bad no manufacturer is making them now.
