Historic bridge raising to allow larger and taller to accommodate increasingly larger vessels calling at the container ports located in New Jersey and Staten Island, the Port Authority looked at a number of options, including replacing the bridge entirely or constructing a tunnel in its place. But raising the roadway 64 feet within the confines of the classic arch structure, as shown below, was deemed the best approach. Ships capable of passing through the current Panama Canal are referred to as Panamax ships. With the opening of the expanded Panama Canal in 2015, larger ships, commonly called Post Panamax, will use the canal; many are too large to fit under the bridge’s existing roadway.
