Composed by Dylan Solomon ’05
Bayou is about looking out over a river on a summer night, where even the water seems to flow slowly through the thick heat. It is about women with strong hands and bright dresses who move together to an unknown rhythm. It is about crickets chirping in the woods and hoping out loud for rain. This is also a song about making music with people, about friends getting together to relax and play.
The parts are simple and everyone knows their own, but when they all come together, the song comes alive. The rhythms interlock and play off each other, just like the people. When you see it done, it makes you want to join in too. The inspiration for this song was born out of Kevin Higa’s “Interlocking Rhythms” workshop and the desire to explore the possibilities of the shekere in a song.
Played in collaboration with San Jose Taiko. Coached by composer Dylan Solomon ’05, a Stanford Taiko and San Jose Taiko alum.
