I was aware that Dolly Parton wanted EP to sing I Will Always Love You but Parker wouldn’t let it happen because of the copyright issues. When I saw that scene in the movie when EP mouths the words to Priscilla I had tears rolling down my face. Another lost opportunity for EP.

Parker told her Elvis got half of the publishing rights to every song he recorded. I don’t know how that works because you know he didn’t get half the rights to songs of big stars. He did YESTERDAY. I know good and well Paul and John wouldn’t let him take half the publishing rights for that. Anyway, Dolly wouldn’t agree to it, and that was the end of that. She said she cried all night because she loved him so much and wanted him to do her song. It IS sad, because he would have done such a great job on it. Once I saw the movie I thought of that story and just got madder at Parker. That rule was so HE could get more money to line HIS pockets!!

@@SuperJaspersmom LOL, no. I can understand that people like yourself who are ignorant about Elvis, the man, and his career would think the movie is good. And it's a real shame that so many young people believe it's an accurate representation of Elvis, but it's not surprising because people today have lower standards than in decades past and are therefore easier to please and pacify ... and that's something Baz does well because he's a lowlife with no standards. But for those people who saw Elvis in person many times and who know more than the National Enquirer version of his life also know that the film is a piece of commercialized garbage, produced by a sleazy creep who specializes in sensationalism. The film is historically incomplete, much of it is based on assumptions and sensationalism because the parties in question are no longer alive, and it is highly exaggerated for the commercial market. I will add that Austin Butler's piss poor performance is no better or worse than any two-bit EP impersonator in a Vegas lounge and he makes Elvis look like a wax caricature. So NO, Luhrmann is no genius, he's a creep and the film is both a joke and pure garbage. But of course, in these times, such things are very appealing to "certain" people. 🙄

I hate that he doesn’t get respect from the Hollywood snobs. He doesn’t make movies for them. He’s very clear his purpose in making films is offer the experience of sitting in a theater full of people you don’t know, and you all share an emotional experience. I remember when theaters were full and you had that feeling. It’s rare anymore.

~~~ Loved the movie, hated the direction they took where Elvis was painted only as a product of the Blues and nothing more, instead of the innovator he truly was. Elvis was always credited with mixing Country with Blues and creating a unique sound Rockabilly, however the movie leaves out all the other influences that go into making Rock & Roll and Pop Music. Pop Music and Elvis were a melting-pot of music and cultures, not just Blues. Granted, it was the blues that caused controversy and that's what sells tickets, however Elvis Presley CANNOT be contained in just one genre, nor should he be portrayed as only a blues artist. From the very beginning of his music (1953-1955) at Sun Studios, he sang Country, Pop, Bluegrass, Hymns (white as well as black). Growing up in the 30s & 40s he idolized the singing cowboys in the movies (Roy Rogers, Gene Autry) Elvis' other BIG influences, Country & Bluegrass Music had a major effect on him, as did Pop Ballad singers like Dean Martin & Bing Crosby. The formation of Pop music and Rock & Roll both derive plenty of country influences (even Chuck Berry had country influences). Popular music undisputedly draws from Country, Bluegrass/Appalachian, and even from Classical music & opera. Regarding Gospel, there's more than one style of Gospel. Even the white penecostal churches were lively in their worship, speaking in tongues, etc, yet we are to only see Elvis in a minority church in the film. While it was an influence, it was not the only one. His family's church was not the latter, as churches were still segregated. He belonged to the Assembly of God Church where he did his first singing. I also believe the movie creates an incorrect image of Elvis learning to sing from his exposure to the minority church. Truth is, Elvis influences were on both sides of the isle. He actually did his first singing in his family's own church, the Assembly of God, and not the minority church. While Elvis loved Rosetta Tharpe & Mahalia Jackson, we cannot leave out folks like JD Sumner, the Statesmen, Hovie Lister, and Blackwood Quartet who influenced him as a youth. Hope you Enjoy his other influences below... @scsu5085 The movie assumes, which is provable, that the audience knows most of what you are (thankfully) documenting here. What a major portion doesn't know are the R&B influences, the fact that Elvis spent a significant amount of time living in an all-black neighborhood, and in a time beleaguered by segregation, Elvis socialized with black people and frequented black establishments. THAT is why this is included. It is also documented, but not shown in the film, that frequently Elvis got the Sweet Inspirations to stay with him and sing gospel songs till daybreak, this AFTER performing for the night. Absolutely unknown about him, and had it been known might have penetrated some of the animosity and vitriol aimed his way by a community woefully left out of his story. In no way was his country-western roots diminished in this movie because, first and foremost, you can HEAR it, and secondly, the movie starts out with him doing business, touring, etc. with those top acts of the day in that genre. All this has done for many is to acknowledge the presence of distinctly black stylings in his music and stage presence. Now others can HEAR it, too. Quite clearly, the segregationists, people who would rewrite his history did not win. Hooray, let's celebrate THAT!
