the fact that the 17 year old from Glasgow is getting just 250 a month for working 30 hours a week is shocking. just a way for company's to get cheap labour. this "placement" is no different than a job. they need this work done right? give her the job then not a "placement" that gives the poor girl barely enough to survive on.

Not sure how "placements" work in the UK but it seems similar to what we call "Temporary". Temp or Temporary workers usually go through an agency for when companies only need extra help for a short period of time. Companies don't want all the hassle with hiring an individual for temp work so they hire the temp agency instead. The temp agency does all the tax work, paper work and determine which people are best suited for the type of work a company wants. The temp agency then takes a percentage of the workers wages. There are also laws which differ between states that give temp workers certain benefits "IF" they work a specified number of hours.

Lucky? Have you learned the kind of skills involved here? Very few people get to retire at 17 at public expense and their vices intact. The key in most Western countries is having enough children to maximize qualification while not getting so slovenly that the children get taken into care so the qualifications are lost. You probably didn't have an upbringing that gave you this particular skill set and your retirement age is probably much older as a result even if it's in a richer environment. (The exception and good argument for a public investment was Shelby prior to her pregnancy.)

A Mc first of all contraception for woman is expensive, it’s not readily available like condoms are. And yes woman should insist on condoms being worn but often men can make you feel pressured or intimidated if you try to say no. Lastly regardless of who’s fault it is, the man helped make a life and should be there. It’s fucking disgusting how many men choose not to have anything to do with their children. Ultimately if you’re not prepared to take care of a baby then use contraception or accept the consequences of your actions. Don’t just point the finger at the woman and use abortion or weak ass arguments like that as an excuse to be a piece of shit. Men aren’t a meal ticket either because most of the cunts aren’t even in the picture which is the whole point. I don’t think you know what your on about talking about double standards and equality. It’s the woman that gets lumped with the kid and the cost. Where’s the fucking equality and double standard there you prick

Heartbreaking to read at the end that she was pregnant. That's pretty much going to condemn her to a life of poverty forever. She seemed to have good instincts on turning things around, but with a documentary they create narratives based on overall footage. Clearly, there was a recklessness about Shelby that we didn't get to see among all the budget calculations and shopping lists.

That work scheme that Shelby is on is a joke. You here politicians and business people endorsing the idea, saying that it gives valuable work experience to the unemployed. What it actually does is provide businesses with free labour. What people like Shelby need is a job. Instead of taking the piss and paying her £55 for 30 hours work which equals less than £2 an hour, pay her a proper and fair hourly rate for that type of work which is around £6ish. But no, as soon as the shop had taken advantage of all that free labour (because the government pay the £55, not the shop) they essentially tell her to fuck off. I've always been lucky with work and have been employed every year since I was 16. I'm 28 now. However., I have always been paid at least the minimum wage. If someone tried to get me to work for £55 for 30 hours work, I would have felt very angry and exploited.

Blade Blunter 17 year old do not need to be paid as much as an adult because they do not have the same bills as an adult. They're usually either living with their parents or in some kind of hostel (in Shelbys case) because it's not legal for a 17 year old to sign a contract to live in their own flat. Yep. She looks in her 50s at least. It's not because she had a baby. Tonnes of women have multiple kids and still look fantastic. I'd put it down primarily to a lifetime of very poor nutrition, processed food, probably alot of alcohol and smoking too. People often overlook the impact of diet on the psychology and physicality of poor people in our society. I honestly believe if more was done to inform and support these communities in terms of providing people with better nutrition and fitness regimes, there would be a marked improvement in how they look and behave. It's not all about money, it's about knowledge. You can eat very healthy whole food diets on low budget. A single meal from McDonalds costs more than 2 / 3 days worth of proper food.

And my high school guidance counselor, always an ear to listen especially during the toughest times and encouraging me to work hard and take advantage of the opportunities that were offered. Many girls in our positions just don't have that level of support, or it just seems normal or so hopeless that it's just easier to live the hard lifef the examples they've been shown. Here here! I'm not on benefits now but used to be! I watch these programs and can't believe what they buy! Food from corner shops instead of walking to a supermarket where stuff is half the price, cooking ready meals or getting takeaways when if they bought potatoes, eggs etc they'd have plenty in for the week! And don't get me started on them drinking, I've never drank for nearly 7 years because while on benefits I had more important things to spend my money on such as my kids!! I also think I was quite well off when on benefits, not rich by any means but you get enough to survive and that's what benefits were meant for, enough to see you through the hard times not a lifestyle choice, I see lots of people on benefits buying out of places like bright house and shopping from catalogues which leads to debt, if we ever wanted/ needed anything we saved and if we didn't have the money we couldn't get whatever it was, simple as that, even at Xmas/ birthdays I still managed to buy my kids the same type of things as what their friends were getting and that's not because I was so rich from being on benefits, it's all to do with how you budget your money to make it last x

Abdul Qaiyum actually only 8% of all UK benefits claimants are capable of working. It's not easy living on benefits, of that 8% of people who are capable of working, only 3% refuse or don't make the effort. The rest are on benefits due to a host of mitigating circumstances, look it up some of the prior consensus Info'. The previous uk prime minister David Cameron even claimed benefits for his own son, it's not just low income communities who rely on benefits. And very few of those actually abuse the system. Sadly, what you're hearing is Tory propaganda.

The benefits system literally creates and restores the working class. People born into poverty are brought up with minimal money in a culture of smoking and alcohol because there's nothing else to entertain yourself with because you can't afford it. Then they grow up and get £100 a week - they buy food, cigarettes, and pay their rent and electricity. They cannot save. They can't afford to go out and do anything. It's the culture. Young women get pregnant because they haven't been educated and are raised in a culture where it's normal. Then the cycle begins all over again. Next to the Job Center, created a education building - make a mandatory part of Job seeker's Allowance for the able-bodied, getting an A-level/apprenticeship education. Make condoms free and accessible for those on benefits. Make the pill non-prescribed. Offer women who apply for benefits the implant to protect them from pregnancy for 2 years at least. If you do this, the amount of people on benefits will decrease. You need long-term investment in order to decrease the short-term costs of benefits. Economically, paying £100 a week for the standard benefits amount over 60 years of someone's life - then the next generation, and the next, and the next, will cost far more in the long term than investing in working class areas, so that the poor have the opportunity to better themselves. I empathize with these girls. Navigating the brink of adulthood and the end of childhood as a girl is not simple - never mind the economic and social struggles these girls have to survive. These girls were born into this culture - it's very hard to get out of something you were born into.

You have a very good point, it IS upbringing. It is down to the parents at the end of the day ... But these girls are educated, they are literate they choose to mess up their own lives because school is "boring". There is a variety of contraception .... do they take it? NO! There's the goddamn problem, you can still have unprotected sex with the pill or butt implants if it's that good enough for ya ... and they're all on the ciggies. "Mah bebeh this! Mah bebeh that! Mom, lemme have another cig because I know it can kill me precous bebeh. Stupid hard working bofs should give us more money because we don't wanna work. (puffs another cigarette) Worst part of the scenario, people like them bring the good of others down. I've seen good hardworking people in school become them because they think they have a future messing up their future in school. They bully them and that's another innocent good person gone through suicide.
@evelister8228
8 жыл бұрын
They've never been raised to believe in education, they don't see it as 'messing up their lives'. A child's largest role models are their parents, and if their families do not value education and don't place value on it, neither will their children. People in poorer areas don't have access to contraception, and often times they don't receive any kind of accurate sex education about preventing pregnancy and STD's.

some good points but how many women do you see homeless with a kid(s) ? I tell you none its near enough all single males , thats what happens once they knock em out for some reason they are untouchable , the kids are used as a shield They go straight to the top of the housing list jumping over everyone else, i would make them live with their parents and free the free flats ups for more deserving people, sometimes wish i had a vagina

I'm always amazed at the care free attitudes of young people in these videos, when they get arrested, jailed and go to court. They don't seem bothered by it and many laugh and joke around. My oldest son had gotten into trouble with the law once. I told him he's on his own. I made him pay restitution for his vandalism with his college savings (it took every penny). When he was let out of jail at 3 in the morning I told him he could walk home in the cold, barefoot, he did just that and it was a couple of miles. I call it tough love. He now has a good job, successful and we are very close. He told me many times that I did the right thing because it opened his eyes. I love him with my whole heart!

I'm actually so hurt to see all the judgemental people in the comments judging them. Don't you know this kinda thing can happen to anyone? Granted some of them don't seem motivated to change their situation, but even the sweetest and most gracious of people lose their jobs and or face a serious struggle. Poverty has no name, it can happen to anyone. These series make me so grateful for my life. I suffer from GAD (anxiety) and I literally save at least 50% of my income so I can avoid this kind of struggle. People judge me but it brings me comfort to know I have well over 10K for emergencies. It eases my anxiety because my biggest fear is being homeless. I do believe some of these girls need a wake up call and need to do better. Being young is not an excuse cause I'm young too (22) and I started saving from 17. Partying with friends and blowing your money on alcohol, drugs and junk is not gonna bring you financial security. I do feel so sorry for them though 😔
