The way the logo appears towards the end of the intro, combined with the perfectly synchonized Simmons/timpani drumbeats and the French horn, is the icing on the cake.

0:34 For those of you wondering about the main headline of this bulletin, I suspect (from the shot of the King Edward VII Hospital) that this is about the Queen Mother being treated for a gastric obstruction (she didn't eventually need surgery, she was just kept in overnight for observation). Therefore, the date caption for these titles is wrong: this happened in 1986.

George Fenton doing his mid 80s epic best. Full orchestra. Synths. Real guitars, bass and real drums alongside the SDS 5. This cuts off early. There's a 30 second bed after this for the headlines and then a reprise of the main theme. There's also an end theme which is a bit shorter.

Fenton's themes were what news themes should be. This era was particularly good and very nostalgic. The Six O'Clock news and this theme were beautifully produced with tight mixing and I love that era's Simmons drums and real orchestra which you can never emulate with sampler. (better than the later stereo re-recordings which was sloppy for BBC sound productions tbh) but I must say his 1989 composition for the relaunched Lambie Nairn graphics (I think) was possibly the most authoritative news theme in the world. When that hit, you knew something was happening in the world :) @Andy Davy kudos for your iconic design work. I was doing my work experience at TVC in 1988 and was with Robin Vinson for a few days who showed me how the 1986 BBC World was animated in code and all the Quantel stuff for Children in Need. Anyway, this was when the BBC was the best in the world with amazingly talented in-house creative before Birt messed it up by introducing Thatcher's market economy.

"his 1989 composition for the relaunched Lambie Nairn graphics (I think) was possibly the most authoritative news theme in the world" Agreed, and I loved how it evolved into an even more dramatic and richer theme in 1993. Those days are sadly long gone now.

Only 1989 relaunch was for BBC Breakfast News, which lasted until the 1993-1997 revamp for breakfast, 1999 for all other David Lowe stuff.

Actually, these were not designed by Cal Videographics - they did the computer animation. They were designed in-house, based on an idea by John Humphrys. Music was composed & orchestrated by George Fenton. How do i know all this? I designed them.

These are my favourite BBC News graphics, closely followed by the 1988 to 1993 BBC news graphics. Interesting to hear it was based on an idea by John Humphrys. It's a pity they only lasted for three years, whereas the Six O'clock News graphics from the same time lasted for nearly nine years.

It is strange that the 9 o'clock changed in 88 but not 6 o'clock. I think in those days the different bulletins were very much thought of as different programmes rather than just BBC News.

What’s the John Humphries connection with some of the comments?. Reference to members: London Weekend Television below, there appeared to be som sort of cover up or protection going, not being to find George Fenton’s music online and KZitem, there’s much on David Lowe, but Fenton’s stuff was the best.
