Another gem of a slow movement from an early String Quartet (1946) by George Walker, arranged for a larger string ensemble, the same genesis as Barber's "Adagio for strings." The quality of the writing is superb, the music at least an equal to the Barber.

Two years on and I still live for the moment that is 3:19-3:23 (plus the build up, of course). I remember it like it was 5 minutes ago. Can’t wait for the day we can play together again.

I arrived here early one morning, drawn by curiosity; (it was in the "to watch" list , aside the Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration video, I had been glued to for the previous hour.) I'm actually a bit sad that I had to wait until I was 80 years old, to hear these divinely uplifting sounds for the first time. I'm now on a (lockdown) quest, to hear as much more of his work as I can find; I'll be back, whenever my soul needs a little lift! Thank you Mr Walker!

greetings from the UK I heard this on radio 3 a moment ago and thought how beautiful this piece was and then found it here. How well constructed this composition is and played so sensitively by an orchestra I have never seen before. A real treat and thank you very much for uploading.

I can't believe I haven't heard of George Walker before, that the Baltimore Symphony hasn't played his music. This is a lovely work. Why have they resegregated themselves?
@martinmcdonald3625
3 жыл бұрын
@@erpollock This is not a segregated orchestra. It is majority Black, Asian and ethnically diverse and regularly includes white players. Its formation along those lines was and is essential to give Black, Asian and ethnically diverse classical players and composers a platform in an industry which has been unfairly skewed against those players and composers for centuries.

This certainly is the companion piece to Barber's Adagio for Strings. Tell me please, why isn't this as well known as the Barber Adagio? We all know why and that's a shame ! Hi Larry. I don’t remember why, but we played it for George Walker over video link to get his comments and thoughts. It’s likely that he spotted an error - possibly with the publishers.
