"Any relationship that you bring drugs and drinking into is doomed to failure." That's some statement looking at his monster success. Long Live Elton John, the man he was and the man he has become.

I agree, RubberSoul. Within only a 3-year span, Elton had 7 albums reach Number 1-- between 72 & 75, which hadn't been accomplished before. He was basically burned out and self-medicating and in denial about everything. He retired in 77. But he really had music in his soul, so he couldn't quit, and made an ill-fated attempt at disco. : P disaster! He didn't honestly have another really good song until '82, with Empty Garden, the song about J Lennon's death. This hit him hard, they were friends.

I remember as a teen reading an article that said "Elton John the Superstars Superstar" How true it was. I never heard why he fired Dee and Nigel I guess you get tired of playing with the same people all the time and feel you have to change things up, to me though even though I like Caleb and Ray the Elton John Band will always be Elton, Davy, Dee and Nigel.

And even less was said about his classic autobiographical album in 1975, the first album to debut in pre-sales at #1 ever, released right after Caribou and his Greatest Hits albums each went #1 also. Captain Fantastic was his apex, I'd say, held onto as a plateau through Rock of the Westies and his singles in 1976.

I wonder if Elton has bipolar or borderline personality disorder.. they're both similar and I have both - I can see some signs of it in him such as the sensitivity, the impulse control issues, and the self harm (which could be the drug taking) plus suicide attempts. I doubt he ever went to a psychiatrist though to get formal diagnoses for anything, and now in older age and sobriety he seems more stable.
@chriscross3962

Frater Tenc I think every performer has to take on a substitute personality to become the character the audeience wants to see. Add to that actually changing your name, trying to deal with the most brutal business there is (and doing it all night after night), bi-polar disorder seems to be a foregone conclusion. Look at the list of those who fell along the way (incl Judy Garland, Marilyn, Elvis, Jimi, Janis etc, etc) and you realise that most of them were overcome by their alter-ego - a role usually designed by someone else

bob smith - wrong! Anyone who has followed Elton since the early days knows all about Bernie. You have to remember he only wrote the words he didn't have to write the music, sing the songs, go on stage, the interviews etc. Bernie was very happy to stay low profile. It's a tough life not being able to walk down the street without being mobbed.

At 4:35, what is it with Brits that they can't learn the word WERE. Instead, they say "his mom and his grand mom WAS over there." It isn't one person. It's two. It's plural. It's WERE, not WAS. His entire band WAS illiterate...Elton, Bernie, and his band members WERE all illiterate!
