A tremendous tribute by John Sergeant! Well done Sir! Many fond memories of being in the back of the 'Diesel Budgie' flying around Scotland. You will be missed but never forgotten, along with your smaller sister, the Wessex.

Been on a Seaking several times flying out to the Isles of Scilly. It’s the only aircraft I’ve felt safe in flying over the sea and living by the coast I always stopped whatever I was doing to stare at them when they were operating. I miss them.

Er, just an observation, the first few seconds of videos shows the rotor blades of a Sea King starting to turn - backwards!!! How on earth did they manage to do that? And if anyone asks I have over 1100 hours on Sea Kings.

The capability of this aircraft should not be over-played. It was designed in the 1950s, a period of rapid development, and barely ten years after the RN had introduced the first helicopters, built under licence in the UK another decade later and already outdated when introduced to RAF service as a specialist rescue aircraft a further decade later. Designed as a wave-skimming naval weapon system, and barely able to stay in the air in many circumstances, it was able to perform rescue operations around the UK for three reasons. It is often cold here and helicopters like cold dense air to push against, it is often windy here and helicopters like some wind to create translational lift, and the pink floppy things in the green onesies up front holding the two levers who will make the old heap fly even if they have to flap their own arm to do so. By the time it was being introduced to RAF rescue service (1978/9), civilian regulators were developing strict rules for helicopter construction and operations to improved public safety (stop them falling out of the sky) and soon the Sea King's civilian cousin was not deemed suitable for public transport operations. Newer twin engined aircraft had outstanding performance but it would be another thirty disorganised and underfunded years before any such aircraft replaced the Sea King and S-61N in UK SAR service.

UN HELICOPTERO TIENE UN MILLON DE VECES MAS UTILIDAD QUE UN CAZA. AUN NO ENTIENDO POR QUE PAISES QUE NO NECESITAN CAZAS GASTAN MILLONADAS NECESITANDO EN VEZ DE UNA FLOTA DE HELICOPTEROS PARA SALVAR VIDAS.
