If you are using a HSI, you could also use the OBS to help further visualize the inbound track..

How far beyond the inbound leg does the protected zone start so that parallel entries don’t violate the rules..?

Great explanation of holding patterns. For myself, I'm a show me first, then let's go demonstrate to cement the concept.

Would like to see a video going thru pattern entry scenarios of an non-towered airport in close vicinity to Class B/C. Example - from N/E/S/W into KVBT.

I found that Captain Joe’s thumb tip for determining the holding entry made these questions super easy for the written exam.

Great video. The only thing I'd clarify is that you need to be flying on a heading to the fix for this method.

One thing that still confuses me is why the one minute inbound legs in the USA. ICAO pans ops do one minute outbound legs then inbound is about being within tolerance of the aid (Eg half scale). TERPS focuses on adjusting the timing of your outbound leg to get one minute inbound and seems more complex. Is it about the protection area?
@captainfantastic6840

That would make sense, however, the only way you are going to know how to adjust for your inbound leg is to see if you were early or late to it in the first lap with a normally timed outbound leg. I don’t get it either because that outbound leg could push a plane pretty far if the tail/crosswind is strong enough.

@@captainfantastic6840 yeah icao nations don’t time on the inbound leg (you just care if you’re going to be within tolerance of the aid). Only time the outbound leg.

This discussion lacked two key aspects of hold entry. One, you forgot to mention this only works, as presented, if you’re direct to the fix. Two, you never addressed how to determine the entry. The easiest method is the 70/20 or thumb method.

Isn’t any hold direct to the fix first?
@svenf1
Жыл бұрын
@@freddyfreeloader1200 Not necessarily; ATC could issue a hold at a fix that is past an upcoming dogleg, in that case you need to either wait until you’re direct that fix or you buy yourself some time and take a look at the chart :) I actually find the entry method quite intuitive; for me the bigger challenge is to copy the entire hold instruction in the first place :)
