Be’La Dona is Washington, D.C.’s all-women go-go band, specializing in the percussive fusion of funk, blues, soul, and salsa that emerged in the District in the 1970s. With artists who were classically trained and brought up in Black church music, the band is sustaining and evolving the go-go tradition.
To close out Women’s History Month, we’re flashing back to Be’La Dona’s performance at the Anacostia Park Roller Skating Pavilion in 2019, co-presented by the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
Dr. Natalie Hopkinson, chief curator of the Go-Go Museum and Café, writes more about Be’La Dona and women in go-go for Folklife Magazine: s.si.edu/499wmPj
