Air Check Valve: They're cheap pieces of kit that I think can save you from a pretty bad potential mess if power goes out and your airline pipes are now draining water out of your tank. It might also happen when something disconnects your air pump.

Can you please tell me how those valves work, whate benefits to that have. I just dont really know

Or simply put the airline higher than the tank. Much safer and simpler.
@DahLekKnight

@@highbrass7563 It's a simple cylinder with two ends which attach to airline tubes. The cylinder allows air to be pushed through and stops water from going past it. It is, simply put, a cylinder with two ends to attach tubes and a flap in the center of the cylinder. Just make sure to install it pointing the right way.
@DahLekKnight

@@MichaelsFishRoom I had considered adding that tip in, but I would still apply it in case the pump and tubing are knocked off from the higher spot. Of course, if you really want, you can use a short tube and hang the air pump higher than the tank. However...for aesthetics reasons, people may want to hide their air pump in behind the aquarium (if it's all painted black in the back) or maybe even in the cabinet area under the aquarium if it is on an aquarium stand. They might want to hide the air pump even more if they turned it into a towel/foam/whatever cover material mummy to muffle the sound of the pump. [unclear thought edited]

Hiya guys! Great advice, I have even made some videos with the same advice! One thing I think people should know, and Lisa touched on it. Our fish are much more hardy than we give them credit for. Because of that, if you don’t have a spare heater or filter, and you get one in a day or two, your fish will be fine. ❤️

Water conditioners that detoxify or lock ammonia will prevent anaerobic bacteria from growing resulting in never getting a full cycle. i also think a small gas generator is a better option than the batteries if you live somewhere you have to run heaters during a power outage. A heater controller is a good thing to have too just in case the heater fails while its on which ive heard a lot of stories about. I completely agree with everything else on the list, great tips!

Air in my non heated no filter tank? This confuses me, because, that tank can easily withstand 3+ days with no lights. Generator takes 30 seconds to fire up. My congo tank can take up to 3 days as long as there is heat. Yes it has an air driven filter, but the tank isn't going to spontaneously run out of air because the power is cut.

I'll be honest, I have basically never used that kit in years. Especially not the nitrite test. If you are not used to starting up new tanks, get a way to test ammonia. Then get a different test for nitrate which you will probably use once a week or so until you get a feel for how often to do water changes. When starting new tanks, assume you will have ammonia and nitrite both for the first month at least, so feed lightly and do a lot of water changes if you have fish in there.

Oy vey! Lisa! Lisa! Lisa! This came out on or the following day where I literally had your first point happen to me. Or, if I'm being honest, BECAUSE of me. If I had only had a sponge filter or sn airstone hooked up separate from the rest of the system, I wouldn't have lost 7 electric blue acara, an 11 inch fire eel, a 7 inch Rainbow Shark, a Cory, a Guppy and probably a bichir (I haven't found his body yet, dead or alive). Why? Not because we lost power but because I turned it off while doing a water change and then failed to turn it back on. Only 3 or 4 hours passed in the interim, but that was enough time that 11 (probably 12) little fish lost their lives. Talk about a kick in the gut!

Guys! You should sell a 10g JUST IN CASE kit, with a heater, light, sponge filter, battery powered air pump, some ail line, air stone, and some basic meds. Instructions would be to run the sponge filter in another established tank, and simply store everything else until needed. Just a thought. Thanks for the reminder that I need to be a bit more prepared. I should have a couple more heaters! I would also say you need TWO spare 10g tanks around, because babies happen. I currently have a sick fish and 100+ fry....wish I had two 10g tanks ready! (the fry got the spare, the sick angel is in a mesh fry separator FYI) Thanks for what you do!

Hey Guys, Ive had an aquarium since I was 10. I had such a healthy tank, but it was all because my brothers ex helped me and taught me everything. She left though, and I just kind of was left alone without knowing much. I did research, and started to take care of it. But the thing is, a little bit ago I went through a severe depressive episode that lasted a couple months. I didnt have the motivation to do anything, or keep up with my aquarium. A lot of the fish unfortunately died. I nursed it back to health (mostly) recently. But when I introduced new fish to the tank, two of them died within the first 2 nights. They were handled really poorly and the person getting them for me at the place was really rough. The PH is fairly high, but Ive been working on that. Otherwise, Ive been testing regularly and nothing seems at dangerous levels except maybe the PH. The second fish, a little common guppy had just passed out of the blue. I didnt notice much odd behavior either, so Im not really sure what happened. My tank is still in rough shape, and Im not really sure what else I need to do to get it better. I have started to clean it more regularly, filter and heater is now fine, theres just so much icky stuff still laying on the bottom. Any tips? Im really stuck with this, as I want it to be at good health, I dont know enough but I want to learn.

I have cupboards full of spare everything, it's so important. Even if you never have to use it that's one less worry at the back of your mind, god knows we have enough to deal already with these days! You'll be so grateful if you do need it, when my Eheim filter motor seized luckily I had a spare one in the cupboard and could swap the sponge into it and have it up and running almost seamlessly. You don't even have to spend a ton of money getting spares, a lot of mine comes from equipment that comes with cheap second-hand tanks I've got from Facebook Marketplace etc.

Then I got a 20 long spare, and it sat around, unfilled for 2 whole weeks… then it too got scaped. No fish in there yet, but I am sure it won’t be long. Good news is that I’ll need to buy a new house or sell some furniture soon if I want to set up another tank after this; but that’s not something that is beyond consideration.

Did you folks know that now dish can drive on land. In little cars. This was done as a study in Israel using little Aquaria that had been motorized like cars. The point of the study was to see whether fish could navigate in a completely strange even unnatural environment. Before they drove on land though they did have some training in what cues to look for and how to operate the controls of the car. The fish did very well. You can find several accounts of this study if you go to your favorite search engine and just enter fish can drive on land in little cars or you can say in motorized Aquaria

I have spare filters and heaters from kit purchases and the battery air pump, thanks KGTROPICALS. The filters are all the same size so I can move seeded media between them. For backup I found an Anker unit for under $200 that can run both heaters and filters for 12 hours. If I have a longer outage, I can charge it up in my car,
