I don't want to post a link in your comments, but if you google "Paul McCartney playing celery" you will find an image that offers definitive photographic evidence of his celery playing.

Totally agree with you on Carl & the Passions and Sunflower. "You're so Good to me" is my favorite song from Summer days and summer nights. It's always massively overlooked. Another song that is always overlooked is "Don't Hurt my Little Sister" from Today! It's totally punk rock before punk rock. Everybody always hates on "Student demonstration Time" from Surf's Up, but I think it's necessary to counter the overall depressive feel of the album (which is great). Friends and Wild Honey are equally charming and fantastic in their own ways. "The Trader" is my least favorite song from Holland, but the entire 1st side and funky pretty are excellent. Smiley Smile is my favorite album. It's gloriously creative lo-fi DIY music centuries before it's time. I sometimes skip "Good Vibrations" because it is so outta flow from the rest of the songs. Cool review.

Kudos that Pet Sounds does not occupy your number one position here. A fabulous record, but perhaps almost too perfect? Over the years, I've been able to purchase all the records you've showcased here, and all on the original pressing. A long time Beach Boys fan, I'm partial to the Surf's Up album too, because it was actually the first Beach Boys album I ever bought, when it was released in 1971. There are a couple of songs on it that prevent it from occupying the top position to my mind though: Disney Girls is overly nostalgic, and Student Demonstration Time is dated. Still, these are hardly bad songs, and side 2 is absolutely flawless. A top-tier album. Pet Sounds also occupies the number 2 position in my overall rankings, but my top choice is "Friends', an album I've turned to time and again, down through the years. It was probably the least hip album of 1968. The initial pressing sold but a handful of copies. I agree that a song like Anna Lee the Healer can seem slight on first inspection, but the harmonies and falsetto vocals by Brian on practically each and every song are irresistible and intoxicating. Dennis' two contributions especially (Little Bird and Be Still) are emotionally intense. The album is very short (therefore not an ounce of fat) and seems very focused. All the songs belong together, it's impossible to imagine one without all the others. One must pay close attention when listening to this record. If you blink you might miss an entire song. I even find the instrumental track 'Diamond Head' intriguing, completely in keeping with the mood of the proceedings. 'Transcendental Meditation' closes the album in spectacular fashion. Though the theme is dated, this might be Brian's most underrated, avant garde recording ever. Frighteningly beautiful album. I LOVE THIS RECORD.

Got to say Brian’s 2004 Smile tour, with help from Parks and others to cobble together major chunks, was a rapturous experience, with the audience so damn happy for Brian seemingly crawling out from under such an emotional weight to finish… something. Not the miracle of modular production he had started with Good Vibrations. And I’m glad the surviving members of the original band pressed to get all the original 66-67 put out in the same framework, wanting though it may have been. (There had already been big chunks offered in their box set years earlier.) Not what Brian should have completed by the holiday season as Capitol was geared up for. But glimmers of Brian’s symphony to God does come shingling through. (Not near as funny as he thought at the time. But ambitious.)

Hi, i consider Pet Sounds a bit overrated, too much hype on that album, i do love Surf's up, Sunflower, Wild Honey, Carl and the Passion, Smiley Smile and 20/20, Pet Sounds is way too much talked about, it's a very good album but i prefer other albums

Pet Sounds is the most overrated album ever. One of their weakest.
