Gotta remember this was produced in 91. Sounds pretty good in all respects. Harmonies are tight. Melodies are quality. Transitions excellent. Still has that beach boys vibe. Gotta remember this band had already been around for 30 years at this point and their sound evolved over that period as well.

Elton, like many other big stars, loved the Beach Boys. This was their version of his song on a tribute album. A bit corny yes, but so catchy and enjoyable. Lovely smooth backing vocals...Carl's influence? Al's lead is excellent. Even like the video. The whole thing is fun tapping fun.

I'm going to go against the popular opinion on here and say that I really like this. You do have to squint a bit and pretend they recorded this in 1964, but if you take it for what it is, it's a neat cover.

The best thing about this song is that it goes low key meta. Remember that it was a period piece when it was written in the 70s. I imagine the fictional Crocodile Rock that's the subject of Elton's Crocodile Rock song would sound a lot like this, it might even be performed by The Beach Boys given the time the real song takes place. It's a cover of a real song done in the style of the fictional song the real song is about.

Elton John like The Bee Gees were die hard fans of The Beach Boys. As many of you know Mike Love & Carl Wilson (RIP) sang backup on the original version of Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, and Bruce Johnston (whose real name is Billy Baldwin) was like Glen Campbell a Session Musician for Phil Spector (Brian's Idol). In 1989 Elton inducted The Beach Boys into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, but it was such a sad evening because many of them died. Dennis Wilson wasn't there to accept his award who died 40 years ago this december, Florence Ballard of The Supremes wasn't there (1943-1976) and in an eerie co incidence a UK Girl Group Icon named Cheryl Ann Tweedy was also born on Florence Ballard's Birthday June 30th, and John Lennon wasn't there when The Beatles were inducted as well.

Brian and Carl. Carl was the leader of this group after Brian stopped touring, went crazy. Still this band needed Brian but Brian also wrote some pretty bad stuff in the late 70s/80s too. Carl though was the glue that held this band together. Brian was the mastermind, the genius, Mike was the showman, the mouthpiece, the ego. Al was the loyal friend and underrated too. The Beach Boys with the exception of their 50th reunion have been nothing without Carl

And remember Mike didn't really like Pet Sounds, wanted to keep making surf songs, stick to the same sound, what worked...that was of course until it became seen as one of the greatest albums ever made. Then he decided to like it and take more credit for it. The BB minus Brian were mostly terrible but then again made some terrible stuff with him in the late 70s/80s but of course Brian's mind was on a different planet then. Mike however...I guarantee he would prefer covers like this over Brian's stuff as he is now a nostalgia act
