As an 12 year old in August 1965, I went west from Chicago to Las Vegas on "The City of Los Angeles". It was one of the great events of my life. Thank you.

Excellent footage. I enjoy watching old railway films. Especially the rare ones with original sound 🤠. It feels like I’m almost standing trackside with them

Wonderful to have this. Loved the Union Pacific Business Train with the E-units. There cannot be a more homely, asymetrical passenger train on earth than Amfleet cars towed by an F40PH in tacky Circus train stripes. Wonder what became of all the tough Burlington Northern F-units? BN had loads of 3600 hp SD45's and many of them ended up with Wisconsin Central.

Visually, if I compare an Amfleet consist to a pre-1971 consist from any top flight road, I barf. I have seen better-looking Circus Trains.

@@douglasskaalrud6865 Burlington Northern inherited all those Northern Pacific F9s. I don't know who Doug Peilet is. This is someone who bought the old cab units?

Ah, cabeese!!! I love when they'd lash up whatever power they had on the front of those trains. Are those first 2 UP locos those really big ones UP used to have?
@chuckgilly

Back then the BN power was a real mixed bag of nuts, them first 2 UP engines were DDA40X, basically 2 engines in 1. "Viva La Cabeese"

I didn’t know UP locomotives had S3L horns. I knew CNW locomotives did, and a few ex-CNW locomotives on the UP roster today do, but I didn’t know UP had original locomotives with S3Ls

Thank you, an exceptional series of clips covering a fascinating era in US railroading! Does anyone recognise any of the locations? I see various shots along the Columbia River and Portland/Vancouver area (loved the swing bridge shot!). Is the UP yard that appears in a number of shots at Pocatello, ID? If so, that would suggest that the UP shots at a summit were probably in the Blue Mountains? Anybody recognise anywhere else?
@chuckgilly

I think the yard you are referring to is Hinkle Oregon, just west of the climb up the Blue Mountains. I lived in the Vancouver Washington area from 2005-2012, I spent countless hours at the Vancouver station, I watched that bridge swing back and forth many times. I recognize most of the locations, lots of good footage of the Longview/Kelso area, gotta love the "Weyerhaeuser Lumber" trestle.

Great to see the Burlington Northern F-units. They appear to be F7s. Wonder if those units worked in passenger service with. The Great Northern and Northern Pacific? Both railroads favored them as they performed better on steep terrain than E-units. Some clips must be 1976, or before because "Circus Train" Phase ll paint scheme on those Amtrak SDP40-Fs.

Some F9’s: the louvres are vertical instead of horizontal and a spotting feature. Of the BN roads Northern Pacific had them.

Amazing video! We'd love to get the clip of the Milwaukee U-boats to promote our project to cosmetically restore the 5057, which was the second unit on that train. Proper credit would be given of course. You can get in touch with us here: www.milwelectric.org/contact/
