its very clear explanation sir, but may i ask @7:38 the 20kn/m moment y it is not multiply to distance 2m sir? or the moment is not needed to multiply in distance? good evening i hope you can read my comment :(

@user-vt4zh7fk3s

It doesn't need to be multiplied with distance because it's already given as moment. When you multiply a force with a distance, you are essentially finding the moment.

What if i take clockwise moments as +ve and anticlockwise moments as -ve? Otherwise it's great lecture and I have understood it
@CornelisKok

You will get the same answer. The convention of clockwise moments as +ve and anticlockwise moments as -ve is common in the civil engineering specialisation.

Probably an obvious answer but for forces on B y, why are you dividing them all by 5? Im assuming its the distance from a?
@CornelisKok
10 ай бұрын
Are you referring to 8.53? That is from rearranging the equation for 'sum of moments'. In the line before, 'By' is multiplied by 5, so the divide by 5 is to get By on its own.

But why ignoring the force that caused a torque of 20?
@akinolaglory2965
12 күн бұрын
I think it was ignored because it is the axial(along the axis) force that caused the moment and one thing about axial force is that they proceed equally in both directions tensile and compressive, so they cancel out. Hope that helps!

Please why was the static equilibrium calculation divided by 5?
@humphreyanumbuaseh570
2 жыл бұрын
It was divided by 5 because it was the lever arm of By or the perpendicular distance of By to where moment was calculated

I am student and still learning. Please why was the 20 not multiplied by the distance its having effect???? When I did mine, I wrote. -20×2-8×3-45×6.5+By×5=0
@CornelisKok
10 ай бұрын
That is because the moment (20) is already in the units of kNm. With this calculation, the fundamental idea is that rotations and translations can be treated separately. The 20kNm moment is a "turning force" that tries to cause rotation. When we add up the moments, we are trying to find what rotations are clockwise and what rotations are anticlockwise. If the system is static (stationary), the clockwise moment should balance with the anticlockwise moments. Also, another way to think of it is the 20kNm moment causes rotation where ever it is placed. Not sure if this is clear, but feel free to ask another question to continue the conversation.

you forgot to multiply the distance with 20 force
@CornelisKok
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shakil, the 20kNm moment doesn't need to be multiplied by distance as it has the same turning effect where ever it is placed on the rigid body.

on Fy, why 20kn is not a force
@CornelisKok
Жыл бұрын
Maybe its not clear, but the 20kNm moment (torque) is trying to rotate the beam clockwise. Ive tried to show that this is not a force by drawing it as a curved arrow (to show the rotation direction)
