Wyoming resident here. My opinion is to use whichever tool gives you the biggest margin for error. Most bear attack engagements happen closer than 10 feet and always happen quickly. Most people are shit shots in high stress shooting situations and putting a high recoiling hand gun round in the brain case of an angry charging grizzly is a very tough shot. Vs bear spray that's designed to work the best within 10 feet and you just need to get the spray in the face. The other reason I carry bear spray is because if I shoot a bear (or moose) I'd have to call the game warden and it'd turn into a great big deal. As opposed to spraying the bear. I don't think there's a wrong answer because there's arguments for both.

I found empty beer 🍺 kegs were great 👍 for scaring 😨 beers. Toss empty kegs and watch out. Worked even better when empty kegs were tossed against dumpsters. @@connorjohnson7928firearms are statistically and logically worse. Not only is bear spray proven to be more effective With a gun you pretty much only get one shot because a bear charging at you will close in on you in a flash and if that shot doesn't hit a vital organ its gonna keep on kicking. Bear spray creates both an area that if the bear moves into its gonna get deterred because their natural instincts tell them if they cannot see or smell they need to run it is also so much easier to aim since it's a constant stream and you only need to point it at the direction and it will end up all over the bears face.

No handgun caliber will make up for lack of proficiency young man… and bears have been taken down by a prepared man in the wilderness with a 9mm many times. As far as your “actual data” goes you may want to learn how to interpret data before you keep assuming these foolish suppositions… like how many people in the study got eaten by bears after using bear spray and lived to tell? How many used a firearm in self-defense yet weren’t as good with it as they could be? What would happen if it was raining or windy? Was the bear actually trying to kill the person or was it a false charge? How would bear spray vs. a firearm affect that situation? None of these factors are considered in your “data”… learn to think on your own!

dude it won't I lived for a while in a place with a high concentration of brown bears and trying to hit a fast moving bear when you're in panic at a vital spot is impossible. No matter how huge your ammo is, if you just hit the shoulder or graze it (which is most likely), good night, the bear will be more pissed off then ever, and the recoil of the high caliber will only make you more vulnerable That's what people don't understand. Even if a gun could theoretically kill a bear, no one is relaxed enough in such a situation to use it effectively Being smart, making noise, being loud and making yourself big when you're approached in the case of cases using spray will save your life in the unlikely situation that a bear will want to hurt you. I am a big fan of options. You should carry three things in bear country, one something that meets a consistent noise to scare off bears. Secondly, bear spray they should be deployed when you have time to move to the third scene. If the first two don’t work, which is a hand gun.

I find a stern "NO!!" Is more than enough. Although it's abuse to yell at wildlife. In a life or death situation it would be ok to yell 1 or 2 times, after that try making direct eye contact and send good vibrations to the animal. You are a guest in their home.

You’re missing the point here young man. This is extremely basic common sense stuff. Bear spray might work one time and might not work another time. Really simple concept here. You don’t want to bet your life on something that may or may not work. Just do a simple Google search and look at all the people spraying brown bears with little to no effect. Try to use your head for more than a hat rack and look at all the documented times even people have been sprayed with pepper spray with Lil to effect then Try and form some positive thought patterns and arrive at the simple, logical conclusion that it’s better to bet your life on something that has a higher chance of success 🤦🏻♂️

Bear spray is effective 90% of the time when used correctly. Injured bears can often be more vicious, so you better be a very good shot with a very powerful gun with large rounds. They say to shoot them in the shoulder. Thing is, if the bear wants to take you out & is too close, it probably will, no matter your defense plan. Most of the time bears don't care to get involved with us. Most attacks are defensive, half of attacks are due to some human error, and predatory attacks are rare. Most attacks aren't fatal, surprisingly.

@@strawbraryliberry4604 hahahahaha so you want to bet your like on a 90% chance of survival? You’d have never survived the hardships your ancestors had to endure for you to be here today… how sad. My chances of survival with a firearm are 100% because I keep my guns clean and well maintained, and I know how to place shots where I need to under stress to stop a mammal. If you can’t use a gun your better with bear spray, but also if you can’t use a gun, it’s not recommended to be anywhere near megafauna! Common sense stuff here man, just sad!
