5 inches at 18 months is concerning assuming you don't trim any length of your beard, you should have way more then 5 inches at almost! 2 years, Did you just not grow any facial hair at all for the first 6 or 7 months?

I am 35 years old. I am overweight and I have a stressful job. My wife also has celiacs and IBS and other autoimmune issues so we have a certain diet we follow. I could definitely exercise more. My wife and I we go to yoga on the beach every Sunday. I feel like my beard always stops growing at the 6 inch mark my ideal goal is for my beard to be 8 inches. Between my wife being sick and taking care of my in-laws and my stressful job it makes sense why I feel like my beard doesn’t grow as fast. And also I stopped taking supplements I used to order beard octanes Supplements and I just stopped. Another great, educational, and informative video by the teach.

Interesting topic. My beard growth seemed to dramatically slow down and even stall between about 7.5” and 8” twice last summer. First time just shy of 8” I did a transparency trim back to about 7” or a little less. Second time it hit about 8” even and seemed to stall again for a while, so I did a second trim to almost exactly 7”. After that it seemed to randomly start growing faster again, and I’m now approaching 10.5”! Definitely happy, as I seriously did not want my max length at only 8” lol.

If i had to guess speaking from my own experience, a lot of this is fueled by the fact many new beardsmen likely go from no care or very lacking to quick turn around of too much care. Too much combing, too much stripping wash, too much heat. Not everyone will make this mistake but a lot of us do. A new beard is a new thing to play and experiment with. If you reference most 16 year olds with a drivers license guess where most of our instincts lead us? Into trouble, its only natural even at a older age with reduced propensity towards such errors. I did this and seeing hair fall out or occasionally break the simplest answer if you don't know better is blaming something like terminal length. It just sounds right even if it isn't.

Yep, Terminal Beard Length all comes down Genetics and Secondly Healthy habits. Even if someone have the " Worst Gens" it will still take over a Year to reach their Max Beard Lengths and those with Beard God gens could take as long as 20+ years to reach Valhalla. So there's hope for every one and if you throw in some good Beard Balm a person can style their beard in away to help cover/fill in patchy areas.

I have been getting a lot of questions about my beard and its length here recently. I try and explain the importance of water intake, stress, diet and product use. I even had a lady at the County Clerk office ask about itching issues. Apparently her husband has had issues and gives up and shaves it off. I think there needs to be more videos pertaining to this. Some people that ask don't appear to like the advice because it doesn't fit their normal habits. They often admit that they don't drink enough water. Many do believe that it stops growing at a certain length. A whole series on this and how important it is would be good.

Every hair follicle on the body has its own predetermined terminal length, and after going through the growth cycle (anagen, catagen, telogen) the hair will shed (exogen) and a new growth cycle will commence. On certain body parts, those hairs are short (arm hair, eyebrow hair, lashes, etc) but may alter over time and with age (eg eyebrow hairs getting longer with age, but not denser). In the beard, the shortest hairs are those on the philtrum (center of the mustache), gradually getting longer towards the mustache connectors, and the longest ones are on the underside of the chin and front of the neck. Again, over time, and with long-term androgen receptor polymorphism effects, some hairs will continue to get longer, and coverage may extend to previous dormant areas (eg growing higher up on the cheeks, age 40-50 onwards). In contrast, the physiology on the scalp results in miniaturisation of the vertex and frontal scalp follicles, resulting in classical male pattern balding. This can be partially mitigated by the use of minoxidil. DHT blockers may reverse scalp follicle miniaturisation, but may impede beard growth and reduce other DHT functions in the body (like penile shrinkage in some men, highly undesirable). Bottom line, beards continue to get better with age, just keep growing!

Great video Dan! Good info, and it totally makes sense 👍 it sounds like a term used to put unfounded limits in people's beard potential. My underbeard/neck region definitely grows the fastest and would most likely have the longest terminal length for me - which if I let grow would be very bushy 🙃 I agree with personal experience on stress affecting your beard. When I've been sick or have extra work stress, I can definitely feel it in my beard - more fallout when I comb and seems to stall the growth. Thanks Dan! Let's see a 2 ft beard, let's gooo!! 😄💪💪

Here's hoping my length is proportionate to yours in a year! P.s. having a significant other that is as excited to see growth as you is a huge help, I probably would have gotten rid of it by now without her encouragement, I had trouble with patches until the 4 month mark and now the patches are covered! Dan, you cover a lot in this video. My 1st question is, did you ever do a stream on this topic like you mentioned you might? Also, I’m reaching the age of peak DHT levels under ideal conditions. I tend to be a pretty cool customer and don’t feel my stress levels are high. My exercise and diet aren’t 100% percent perfect , but I’d say are most certainly better than average and haven’t changed much. My water intake has only improved with age. My question is, my beard grows 1000 miles an hour until it reaches the 6-7 inch length. To your point, it seems like it stops, but it doesn’t. However, it does slow down dramatically. Considering my overall mental and physical health is quite good and unchanged over the years, outside of what you covered in this video, could there be some other factor playing a role that I’m not thinking of?

I think of this as a ladder affect in that the hair goes up a few rungs and then down one, up a few rings and then down one and collectively progresses longer. I could be very wrong here.🤷♂️

Outside influence can also effect length. I don't think I can go much past 10 inches due to my work causing damage. Between the sharp machined parts and chimicals. I've even noticed my left side is shorter and a little thiner due to always having a notebook and a few tools in my shit pocket. Technically it's damage but could easily be perceived at terminal growth.

Way off topic but I got a quick question, I'm getting a little seasoned in life when it comes to my age....do I treat my beard differently due to transitional color from my normal color of my beard to gray? It's not fully gray, but it's in the transitional period At this point in time.

Loving your content Dan.. I'm in my late 50s now lost most of my hair on my head in my 20s so just shave it now.. But I'm 10 months in on the beard growth.. Grey apart from the moustache which is still dark and two dark lines of hair either side of the mouth.. Looks good.. To me anyway lol. So it's about 4 inches long now the cheek hair is slow but the goatee / chin hair grows great.. How old is your beard.. As I mentioned I'm 10 months in now but I would like your length.. When I started growing out my beard ten years ago it didn’t look as good as it does now. It’s a lot fuller then when I was younger, patches disappeared my cheeks got fuller! So does it also have to do with age ? That when you get older your beard can get bigger or grow more hair ?

Dan C Bearded I like to watch some of your video's but I have to say that I break all of the bearding rules out there. Broken Rules: I wash my beard daily with Suave Almond and Shea Butter shampoo and then separately their conditioner, Towel Dry and then Hair Dryer full blast hot heat, No beard oil products at all. I use New Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Marvelous Oil Hair Elixir made for Normal Hair about 3 or 4 Tablespoons Daily, I brush my hair with a Hair Brush that comes from the Dollar Store that has enough beard hair in it to make a wig, During a normal day I drink almost as much coffee as water and yet I have a 14 inch beard measured from the lower lip down that appears to me to be pretty healthy. My best advice for growing a big beard is to let it grow and Quit trimming it every time you look in the mirror and Ignore all of the negative comments. Now in saying all of that I believe in doing some groom trimming but if your going to grow a big beard you need to stay away from the underneath the chin part at all cost or you will never grow a long beard.

I’m 52 and have been growing my beard without trimming for over 2 years. I take really good care of it. It was at 7 1/2” about 6 months ago. Now it’s at about 6”. Not sure why it’s getting shorter. Lol. Figured it was a growth cycle thing. But overall it seems like it will not grow as long since it started going gray. I’m hoping it’s just a phase. The longest I ever let it go was a 9” goatee. My hair is very curly and coarse, and it’s very bushy. Maybe that has something to do with it too. Any advice would be appreciated. Great channel!

Hey Dan! Great video! I did ask a question regarding this on one of your live streams. But I have another, Lets say I comb my beard in the morning and I shed a hair that makes up the longest part of my beard. And I see it has that white globe on the end. Does that mean that my beard will never get longer than what it is now? Thanks! - Freddy

Interesting topic and always, very informative video! Your last statement about terminal length being believed to be around 2-3 feet has me curious about what everyone’s thoughts might be for the “wearing down” of hair at increasing lengths. Most tissues even those made up of keratin will wear down and smooth over with time and repetitive impact. However, I’m curious because even if they tried, would most never see that terminal length because of the hair simply wearing against shirts, laps, getting snagged and broken, etc? Or is it more because of the trimming cycle and trying to achieve the illusion of fullest beard possible by trimming to slower growing hairs or hairs that have reached a shorter terminal length?
@DanCBearded

It’s not going to be pleasant at that length (more like dreadlocks) but it will keep growing for sure.

Great video.. I’m somewhat a believer in terminal length but I know it isn’t true… Not an analogy but I guess it’s similar as if, let’s say, you’re looking to hit a target weight goal or weight loss and you’re stuck in a plateau.. You need to change the workout routine and/or supplements to break that plateau..

I feel I'm getting hairier the older I get, but it's my entire body! Now at 56, I have hair growing in places I never had or want it to grow. The only good news is I have a beard that is much fuller today than it would have been 10 or 15 years ago. My beard in my 30's and 40's would have been much more patchy, however, I never had to shave my back and shoulders. It's a trade off I guess.

I wonder what the actual gains are with increased health/nutrition/good stress? I doubt there's a simple answer, as it would be very person-specific: even measuring how far below "optimum" you may be on all these lifestyle variables would be something almost impossible to measure, or for people to even agree upon I'd imagine. From an empirical point of view, I think if you were to use beard data (say on total length, which isn't great but is an easy metric) to create percentiles (like how they have baseline percentiles for your baby's weight and height), you'd find anything over a couple of feet would put you in a very high percentile, between a foot and 2 feet would probably cover the middle 50 percent, and from a couple of inches to a foot would cover the lower 50 percent. That's all guess work, obviously. But it could be done, in theory, and may be the best approach available. The fact that there are not thousands of guys running around with beards to their belt buckles indicates to me that terminal length for average guys is finite. Lastly, while I agree that people shouldn't fixate on terminal length, and often misunderstand it and fail to optimise it for their own personal circumstances, it is a real thing and lifestyle changes will only get you so far. I'm not going to exercise my way to a 12 inch moustache, for example. But, as you say Dan, with the proper lifestyle changes I might optimise my moustache length to whatever my genetics limits it to. Same for the beard hairs I'd imagine.
@DanCBearded
Жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely, it’s real! There is a point where the individual hairs will never grow beyond. The main point of the video is that with the length of the longest parts of the beard (even looking at the beard as a mass) most people never ever venture to reach that true terminal length. It would take at least 6-7 years of no trimming to approach it. And even then the life variables can prevent true terminal length. There are just too many people that blame their lack of growth (or perceived) on the magical “terminal length”, rather than addressing the real issues. I know I am preaching to the choir with you lol but just had to get my thoughts down. I love the experiment/research approach! I know that’s your world and how your brain works, which is awesome. There are a lot of challenges to that one but we could get some wicked average data and I think it would be valuable. I’m excited to see the beard industry grow because where there is money… there is research. Thanks for taking the time to leave the well thought out comment!
