Please continue to explain things from bottoms up so your viewers can have understanding, instead of just information. I came here just looking for information on lubricating my Hubsan quadcopter. By describing the three common bearing, you made it easy for me to deal with lubrication on other models as well in the future :) You have made a nice choice by remaining non-affiliate, it increases your trust-worthiness and it will pay back better in the long run as well. The labels come off my bottle I think it was OilKit Scorpion Motor Bearing Lubrication Kit after checking an RC site. Its a darker green colour and looks a little thicker than the watery Tarot oil. The squeezy bottle allows direct attachment of the needle which I leave on, sheathed of course. It makes you wonder how these products are formulated. Nice little review.

I just watched this today, and I'm impressed with myself. About a week ago, I had a crash with my zmr250 and my motors got a little dirt in them. It's actually happened a few times, I have a lot of sand in my yard. Anyway, I use my air compressor to blow the sand out of the motors, but they still seemed a little gritty, so I used some pneumatic air tool oil which has a nice needle on the bottle. It's a nice light oil that looks similar in thickness as what you have in your video. It was great, quieted those motors down! Nice and smooth and quiet. I too always read not to oil mini-quad motor bearings. But after my experience, I will be from now on. It doesn't make any sense not too.

Excellent subject matter Bruce and something I would hazard a guess at being overlooked by most rc hobbyists. Maybe a though to do a series on mini quad care, repair and maintenance after you finish your low and top end builds. Would be good to have some in depth videos on changing bearings, cleaning your frame and electronics, checking solder joints and examining for damage etc. Either way keep up the good work keeping the new hobbyists informed and on track!

Man, you know a lot about bearings and, now, I do, too. Thanks. BTW, for syringes without a "needle," you can get oral medication syringes, usually for free at pharmacies in the US. They have hobby uses such as the metered application of adhesives. For syringes with "needles" (they have no razor tip, just a flat tube end), I know of another source: syringes intended to be used for the precise application of SMD solder paste.

Bruce; love your channel, you're doing a great job so keep up the great work. on bearing lubricant; I have a lot of experience in this department so I think I can help. After 43 years in the hobby and trying a lot of different products, I found the best product for bearing lubricant is a product call Dripless oil. I don't know if you have a NAPA auto parts there but that is were I found it. Even in a RC dirt car environment after oiling bearings with the Dripless oil the bearings run free and stay clean. Only one application a year is necessary as once the oil goes into the bearings the chemical that carries the oil in evaporates leaving the lubricant behind. Give it a try while you are testing the Tarot oil. Kenny

Scorpion lube oil been around for some time and have used it religiously on my multi's motors. A little more viscose than the Tarot offering. One has easy access only to the lower of the two bearings in a BLDC (most cases). Getting to the upper can be difficult in many designs.. Banggood's price is compelling considering the free shipping but not the only option. Tarot is simply the name on the label, Scorpion sells 30ml from the factory for $6.00 plus another $5 for shipping from Hong Kong

I use CorrosionX. I put a little bit in a bottle cap and use a toothpick to put little drops in my bearings. I also sometimes remove the motor bells, clean out the bearings with brake cleaner, blow them out with compressed air (DON'T SPIN THEM!!) and re oil them. I think my 500ml bottle of the stuff might last quite a while although it's useful for making electronics more water resistant too. My motors always sound smoother after doing this.

I never thought it was necessary to lubricate the little bearings in small multirotor motors. I look forward to hearing how you think it works. I was thinking that mini quads get pretty dusty and dirty with crashes and having the motors and props so close to the deck. Would lube just make the dust and dirt stick in the bearings?
@xjet
9 жыл бұрын
valderja That's one of the arguments -- but the shields do a pretty good job at keeping dust particles out and one could argue that if there's a bit of oil on the outside of the bearings (ie: on the shields) that might trap the dust before it could get inside. One of the reasons I'm doing some tests is to see if the dust issue is a real one.

Would really appreciate a teardown of an oiled bearing vs an unoiled one after a few months. I've been told when i was starting out a couple of years ago (450 helicopter) not to oil the bearings as it'll turn to mud and get sucked in. They were the veterans so i took their word for it and just stocked up on bearings like they do. But i still wonder if it's for real or if it's just one of those mechanic stories (myths?). Would be pretty educational showing the inside of a used bearing. Normally i do these kinds of experiments myself, and i do have quite a few noisy bearings, but i don't know how to take one apart.

Hi Bruce! My Hubsan X4 H109s (poverty edition) has finally arrived! Now comes the question that is pertinent to your excellent video. How do I lubricate the motor bearings? I got a bottle of the Tarot oil that you feature (Mr Tarot can book a holiday on the strength of this) and it comes with a syringe and needle. Here's the thing. Do I drop oil on the top bearing which is fairly accessible or do I have to take out the motors and oil the bottom of the bearings as well? This looks like it would be a pain in the derrière. Any ideas?

I've been lubricating my bearings. They seems to vibrate less and be very smooth. Many say not to. Supposedly the oil washes out the lube in the case bearing. I assume after so many runs with heat that grease will eventually be gone. So what's the verdict? To lube or not to lube? That's the question

will this high speed oil bearing be usefull for brushed motors (quads) or are there better alternatives- got some Tarot PTFE grease lubricant (1 buck delivered so ridicalus cheap, just to have on hand if needed) but its transparent grease so likely not that ideel to lubricant RC motors. and the standard silicone spray-oil most households got at home, likely not ideel either. Do the motors that you use have bearings at the top as well as the bottom (if not, why not) If they do then how do you lubricate the top bearings with the prop driver attached ? Your explanation of the 3 types of bearing shown was helpful, but presumably the bottom bearing of a motor used in a multi-rotor is subject to a sideways force as well as a rotational force unlike those used in a crankcase bearing for example.

I can see how to lube the propeller side of the motor (thru the slots) but how do you lube the bearings that are on the motor-mount side? Yeah, you could remove the motors from the frame, take the motors apart, lube the bearings and put them back together, re-mount onto the frame but who has the time and motivation for that?
@xjet
9 жыл бұрын
CrackerMcGillicuddy It depends on the type of motor and craft. Most multirotors have access to the bottom of the motor so lubricating the rear-bearing isn't too much of a hassle. For fixed-wing craft where the motor is bolted to a firewall then you probably don't need to lube the bearings as often anyway so I'd just lube the front one on a semi-regular basis and leave the rear one for very occasional attention. To be honest, multirotors place far more strain on their motor-bearings than most fixed wing and thus demand a more regular maintenance schedule. I have *never* lubed the motors in my AXN's for instance -- although I notice some are getting a bit wobbly now ;-)

Hi. I have big problems with my Futaba T8J transmitter. My friend has a Futaba T6J transmitter and if we try to fly at the same time sometimes the transmitters disturb eachother. Can you please help me understand this problem?

Borkenes RC It sounds as if both radios may have the same GUID (a unique identifying number that allows receivers to recognize the correct transmitter when more than one are being used). Futaba did have a problem a long time ago with transmitters forgetting their GUID and reverting to zero which caused very similar issues. I'd return it to a Futaba service agent and ask them to check it.

I want to see a test of oiling bearings vs no oiling. I've seen folks argue, "don't oil the bearings you'll wash the factory grease out and soon your bearings will be toast". I've had good success with oiling my bearings but also have had some pretty quick bearing failures recently. Perhaps they weren't good quality bearings? Maybe my 70 wt synthetic oil was too thick. I don't think it is for a hot motor though but maybe for a cold motor. Maybe its too thick for winter flying I've actually seen that to be true as I can feel the drag and have lightened it up a bit in the winter. I can put a drop on a hot motor though in summer and it dissapears in an instant.
@Plur307
8 жыл бұрын
70 is a very thick oil. Probably not good for a bearing. I think that is meant for a hot engine. I have some scorpion brand oil (they make some very decent miniquad motors) and it is thin like water. I imagine they know what they are doing.

+Plur307 Im sure theyve done the bearing lube test for sure. Im gonna try some 30 wt a while and see how that does. Id like to see a test of equal stress on RC Bearings with factory grease, light and thicker oils and see which one comes out on top.
@Plur307
8 жыл бұрын
Transguy Watch this video again. Bruce explains why lighter oils are better for high speed bearings. A heavier oil will prevent the ball bearing from rolling properly which will make it skid along the surface of the bearing instead of rolling. That will create a flat spot. It's a downward spiral from there. Slow spinning bearings that need to support a heavy load like an automotive wheel bearing have very heavy oil or even grease. A bearing for a quadcopter motor has virtually zero load on it. The only purpose is to be low drag so a very light oil is desired.
@RC-Heli835
8 жыл бұрын
+Plur307 Yeah I heard what the purpose of the thin oil was but tests tell the real truth in hours of use until failure. And of course hes doing one bearing with thin Tarot oil and one with factory grease. Id love to hear from him on which fails first, it may take some time though. Im already trying some thinner oil after watching this.
@Plur307
8 жыл бұрын
Transguy I've never had a quadcopter motor last long enough that the bearings die from hours of use. I always wreck the motor from crashing first. Same goes for lipo batteries. They die from physical damages before I ever reach enough cycles to wear them out. That or I puff them from drawing too much current.
@atomicskull6405
9 жыл бұрын
Bearings come stock with grease. In my experience this will last a long long time. As soon as you put oil in the bearings you're going to have to oil it every dozen flights or so because the bearing will sling it out pretty quickly. There is a device called "the greaser" that will force grease past the metal shields and clear all the crud out. I stopped using oil and switched to grease a while back on my helicopters and I find I only need to re-grease the high speed bearings every hundred flights or so (low speed bearings can go for longer). I use super lube synthetic grease for this. It's also great for thrust bearings, it stays put in the blade grip, has a better consistency than silicone grease and doesn't dry out over time like lithium grease)

I have this for my skateboard bearings www.oustbearings.com/index.php/shop-online/met-ol-speed-oil I'm gonna give it a try in my sunnyskys. It's made with graphite and it's super fine, it even comes with a fine tip applicator. Bruce, you should get this and do a comparison. with the tarot oil. Or put one type of oil on each of the four motors and see which one works best. You could try sewing machine oil as a budget option and maybe wd40, cause everyone has wd40. put them on the thrust stand see if there's any difference, then just go fly and after a bit of use and abuse go back and see how they're holding up. I would be very curious to see the results of such a test.

Rob B Yeah... but $9 including shipping *with* a syringe is also pretty cheap. We'll see if it's worth the money though :-)

Lubricating those tiny RC bearings makes no sense, too much hassle. For example those 608zz bearings cost 25 cent, so replacing them from time to time won't ruin your budget and you will have to do it anyway because such tiny bearings don't have a long life expectancy.

MasterBata The problem is that replacing them can be a real pain in the backside, at least when we're talking about small brushless motors. A minute or two every week spent in preventative maintenance can save/defer such repairs later.

I just use synthetic Motor oil. Mobil 1 10w40 in a little applicator bottle. If it's good enough to lube Ferrari and BMW engines, it's good enough for my cheap little motors.

JRWperformance 10w40 is probably a little viscous for high-speed bearings -- even the 0W30 I was using was much thicker than this Tarot bearing oil.

How does WD40 do?
@xjet
9 жыл бұрын
seebuyfly Noooooo! WD40 is not a lubricant! It is primarily made up of solvents that will wash any lubricant away. Never use WD40 as a lube or you'll significantly shorten the life of your bearings. They may seem fine for a short while but the solvents evaporate very quickly and actually leave a horrible sludge behind that doesn't lubricate at all well.

Thanks Bruce, I knew that was true of bike chains but wasn't sure about bearings. Still remember the bike shop guy going "No no no, WD40 is a water dispersant!"

can you use 100% silicone for lubrication?
@bozi7023

I actually used strictly spray silicone on a set of four sunnysky2204's and strictly bearing oil on another set of ss2204's. The bearing I used silicone on wore out a lot sooner than the oil bearings, but the silicone set got a lot more abuse. Honestly id stick to a specific bearing oil and don't use anything else. Also when mud and dirt get lodged in your motor don't use compressed air to clean it out! Take the time to separate the motor and bearings, clean it right! Also too much oil attracts dirt, a few drops will do every 25-30mins of motor on use and clean off the excess with a paper towel or rag.

Bozi B That is why I only use Silicone spray. it protects the motor from moisture and does not attract dirt.

Ya but I don't think silicone spray is good for the bearing over time. idk though maybe it doesn't hurt them? HaHa, I am replacing bearings in my mini motors from crashes way before a wrong lubricant can damage the bearings!
