Hey everyone, its 4th of July weekend which means it’s the beginning of Summer and one for the most difficult times for maintain a cool season lawn. If you are new to lawncare there two issues you’ll be fighting over the next two months, and they are Disease and Drought.
In this video Ill explain how you can manage these two issues.
In order to control disease properly the first thing you want to do is make sure you follow sound cultural practices. And by that I mean, mow frequently, with sharp lawn mower blades. This will prevent frayed tips leading to a more disease resilient grass plant.
Proper watering is another disease management strategy. When watering your lawn, do so early in the morning. This will allow your lawn to get a drink with out the water evaporating off in the hot afternoon sun. If you water in the evening, then then your lawn will sit moist for 12 hours, which creates ideal conditions for fungus invade your turf, and that’s what were trying to avoid.
Another consideration is not to over fertilize as this can stress out your lawn in the heat and make your turf less resilient to fighting off infection.
This of course wont guarantee that you don’t get disease and you’ll have to control it via fungicide… This can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make. However, for the purpose of this video well keep it relatively simple. There are two wide spectrum fungicides readily available products at your local hardware store, Disease ex and bio advanced. Both are effective and easy to apply. You can also buy the active ingredients in a less expensive generic form online Azoxystrobin and Propiconazole respectively. I tank mix both of these products, as the dieses controlled by these active ingredients dot completely overlap. This of course is a bit more work and requires a sprayer, but is effective nonetheless. By following the suggested intervals on the label you should be able to manage disease in your lawn without a problem.
Our second summer strategy is proper watering. Ideally, you want to get an inch of water a week. You can use a rain gauge to keep track of how much natural rain you get, and if your not getting any rain water your lawn twice a week getting down a half inch of water. I use the rain gauge to measure the output of the sprinkler.
Some areas in your lawn may need more, especially areas that are fully exposed to sun all day. Also areas along sidewalks, driveways and the road may also need some additional hand watering.
If you don’t want to water that much you can let your lawn go dormant and turn brown, but you shouldn’t let it go more than two weeks with out water other wise you risk completely losing the plant and it wont recover when cooler temperatures show up.
If you follow these strategies, you shouldn’t lose any turf this summer, and come September when cooler temps show up, you should be way ahead of everyone else in the neighborhood. I wish you luck. I listed the products I use in the description . If you have any thing to add, let me know in the comments. Thanks for watching!
