I like to pull over at least every hour, depending on rest stop distances, and walk around while drinking and eating a snack. I do rest in the shade or A/C. Another important thing to do is eat decently healthy meals with lots of veggies. Stay away from soda. Great video PSA.

A few years ago I planned a trip from So Cal to Texas in June. I thought June Gloom (overcast and cool) would protect me. By the time I hit Palm Springs I realized there was no June Gloom, that was only a coastal phenomenon. It was 108 F the whole way over. My cooling vest dried out under my touring jacket every 45 minutes. I walked around like a zombie at every rest stop.

I've ridden like that before, where at each stop I would buy a bottle of Gatorade to drink, and a bottle of water to pour over my head and my shirt!

One more thing I highly recommend is a cooling towel around your neck. I get them soaking wet and clip it around my neck. Your shirt will end up wet But will dry While riding. I run a landscape company and this has saved my butt so many times. One other big advantage is to keep the sun off your skin. Glad I found your channel and great tips!

Great advice. I live and ride in Tucson where it is normally 100-110 between June and October. Humidity is 10%. Add 20 deg for the temp of the asphalt roadway. Hydrate BEFORE you ride. You need to drink a liter an hour and should take a break every hour. Carry water in your camelback and electrolytes in a bottle. Heat exhaustion sneaks up on you and messes up your thinking and judgement first. And remember, if you experience thirst…you’re already significantly dehydrated.

You got it. At least with the low humidity you get the benefit of at some evaporative cooling from sweat. In the southeast, where humidity in the summer can regularly get to 100%, your body's evaporative cooling stops working altogether, because your sweat can't evaporate.

My wife and I lived in the desert in southern Kalifornia where it was routinely between 100 and 130 degrees. We rode in it very frequently. I always rode in those temps with full gear on as well. My jacket has armor, my gloves have armor, my boots are steel-toed and designed to be slip-resistant on oil and such, and probably wore a full-face helmet half the time and a half helmet at other times. I never overheated. I'd sweat more than Michael Jackson at a Boy Scout jamboree, but my body would cool because of the wicking from the shirts I wore (the same that you mention in the video). Gatorade or some other electrolyte-rich drink was almost always a part of the "loadout," unless it was a short ride to meet friends for a meal and drinks (non-alcoholic). It is very possible to stay safe in super high temps, although it's not pleasant to ride in those temps. Great reminders about heat stroke (it really will kill you very quickly) as well as not to chug just straight water. My wife would pour straight cool water down my back in those temps, but that's a LOT different than drinking it. I can't even begin to describe how good some cool water feels on my neck and back when we're riding in 125-degree temperatures. Keeping the skin cool is a big plus, too!! Thanks for a great video! It's two years old, but the information is timeless!! Ride well, sir!

Excellent video. My wife and I have just returned from a multi week tour from Canada to New Mexico. With temps ranging from 6*C to 37*C and as you can imagine there is no room for multiple types of gear. We have learned the value of electrolytes in the hotter temps. Also while stoped for gas you can make use of the washroom to soak your shirt in the sink and put it on under your jacket. It helps keep you cool till you can justify topping off the tank, or maybe buy another bottle of Gatorade.

Been riding since 1973 but I finally bought my first Wing on June 23rd 2021. A gently used, 26k mile, pristine 08 GL-1800. I love this bike. I am in New Mexico. Since I bought it, I rode it home from West Texas, been to Colorado twice, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana. I will probably shoot out to California in October. My poor Harley Electra Glide is pretty much used for short local errands or day-rides with my Harley riding friends.

Thank you! Very good reminders. I live in the Southwest USA, as a daily ( and year-round) rider, it can be quite miserable in the summer here and also very chilly in the winter. I do apply everything you recommend but I could indeed be a bit more cognizant of taking in electrolytes on longer types of rides.

Pre-hydrate yourself before your ride, and always drink fluids before you get thirsty. If you wait until you're thirsty you are on your way to being dehydrated. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and coffee all these things will act as diaretics and dehydrate you. Bananas are helpful, but actually most fruits will help with potassium its just that bananas have better PR. If you use a commercial electrolyte replacement drink think about mixing it with water or if you're like me it might upset your stomach. Until I got ran over by a moron in a car (walking) I was into doing weekly 100+ mile bicycle rides in Florida summer weather, and with taking these steps I never had problems with cramps or dehydration. And when I got home that cold beer always tasted so good.

I’d like to go further into detail on the heat coming out of our goldwings. And I’m not only talking about our gl1500s either. I had a conversation the other day at a gas station with an elder lady that drives a Gl1800 goldwing trike while my wife and I were heading up to South Haven beach. She said to me that she loves her goldwing but for her it’s usually more of a spring or fall kinda bike because of the heat that it generates. “Frankly” I couldn’t help but to agree to what she said about that. I have highway pegs mounted on the engine guards of my wing so I can kick my legs up and away from those vents and catch the air right into my pant leg going down the road… however sometimes this is not an option especially so at lower speeds and driving around town. Can you touch base on this some more in the next video, seems like it would be a good topic since Summer is finally here and we’re seeing 110* heat index in northern Indiana, and most of Michigan as well.

I know that you have insulated Gear with your PC. Hopefully that's a liner that can go into any jacket instead of a dedicated jacket. Anyway. I wear my mesh all year long. And like you I try not to go below freezing. But my mesh with my rain gear which you were already carrying and I always carry too. I can go pretty little and then if I add a soft shell jacket or a wool sweater or both under my mesh. And perhaps long johns under my jeans or the insulated layer of my rain gear, because my rain gear does have that. Everything is great as it gets colder because the magic of insulation is the concept of Loft. Or trapped layers of air which you so adequately describe in the cooling effective mesh also works in the insulating effect of mesh turning into trapped layers of air or Loft when you put your rain gear over it. So what I actually have is a hot weather mesh jacket that is silver. And that gives me an extra couple minutes in the direct sun at a stop. And I don't wear that all year long because I live in Washington and it rains a lot. And I'd rather not wear out the reflectivity of my silver mesh jacket. So I wear my black mesh jacket most of the year. Which actually absorbs some heat during the cooler days of normal riding that are not cold

I have one already! It adds a bit of cooling air, but by far the "hand wings" that mount on the mirrors make the most difference.
