Life is tough; it's tougher when you can't keep a very good beat. However, I'm glad Pete eventually received a pay-day for his contribution to the Beatles.

@@frannsh5100 if a drummer keeps time 100% of the time then he would be described as being good at keeping time. If he loses time 20% of the time then he’s likely to be called shaky and not very good at keeping time. It’s silly to listen to one song and then say it proves the other Beatles were wrong to describe him as bad at keeping time. Listen to Love Me Do with Best on drums as an example of Best being very shaky.

For Tangible Android - the rolls are uneven, all the fills are the same (or try to be the same), and his hits on the snare and bass drums are not consistent. I'd like to hear a comparable Ringo isolated take like this. That's really the point, isn't it?

As a drummer myself I understand why rock n roll appealed to so many hopeful teenage boys at the time and why it has endured. Maybe these young Beatles were only looking for a good time or maybe it was stardom, Elvis style. Having said this, Paul seems to already have the voice he will forever known for and perhaps he wanted to be like Elvis. Pete’s drumming in the other hand makes me think knhe was in it mostly for fun and getting “chicks.” 🤷🏻♂️🥁
@theblytonian3906

Drummer & guitarist here. I agree re your "in it mostly for the fun and getting chicks" as Pete's most probable primary motivation. A observable absence of instinctive natural ability -he'd have had to work harder putting in more effort, time and focused practice than someone who has it to achieve a modicum of skill/competency, which quite obviously from this sample at the time, he hadn't.

He's making it way more complicated than it needs to be. But yes he could play. There are mistakes that a pro drumner could detect. One is the way he handles stops and accents. Ringo kept it simple and made abrupt stops and accents were more clear. When you overplay it just doesn't emphasise it enough. Not sure about his high hat sound. Also sloppy snare. Keep in mind that I'm being critical. It's not really bad for a rock band. But look at what happened when Ringo joined.

This song has fairly hard timing.. a kind of Calypso beat.. I think Pete tried to over complicate it if anything. It’s almost like he didn’t use the kick at all.. sounded a bit like a marching band.. he shows some skill.. but not much imagination.. in my books.

There are about 2 dozen plus recorded songs with Pete Best with the Beatles. There quite a few, including 'Love Me Do', where you can find Ringo playing on the same somngs with the group. Often they are live cuts. You could probably start with the Pete Best Decca audition cuts, like this one. Then find the Ringo ones, often the Beatles Live at the BCC releases. Pete Best's 'Love Me Do' is one The Beatles Anthology 1. Ringo does 'Love Me Do' live on their first BBC disc. Somewhere on KZitem somebody put together a lot of these examples of Pete Best and Ringo Starr playing the same songs. You can hear the difference.

The thing about The Beatles is that what they had, as in John, Paul, George & Ringo is something that cannot be replicated by any foursome. It’s the music, that is the essential ingredient then their personalities, their humour, their bond with each other, their look,, their supreme musicianship it can’t be replicated. The Americans tried with the Monkees, but they were not mates with a history and not musicians, they were manufactured. Pete Best was never truly a Beatle………he was only filling in temporarily until Ringo arrived.

You can hear him drop the beat several times during this and he could only do one beat which didn't work whenever they needed to do a song of a different tempo. While John, Paul and George improved in Hamburg Pete pretty much stayed the same and never got any better. He didn't fit in with John, Paul and George and didn't really associate with them when they weren't playing, Ringo fit in much better with John, Paul and George and was one of the best drummers in Liverpool before The Beatles even had a drummer. Also Pete's mother promoted The Beatles as Pete's band and tried to interfere and manage them even after they signed Brian Epstein who always referred to her as "that woman".

Lots of drumming issues discernible here. If assessing from this singular sample at the time, one could deduce John Lennon's summation of Pete being 'a lousy drummer' was accurate, and the understandable if fickle context of paraphrased, 'we only took him aboard because we needed a drummer to go to Hamburg' if brutal, honest. Similarly the alleged intention, 'we always intended to replace him', arguably truthful. Although anyone decent must have empathy for Pete Best in how his sacking was done, and the seeming ingratitude after his loyalty slogging away with them through the hard times while they used him in Hamburg and home, it was the right decision for the other three, and ultimately for the band which was then yet still to achieve an international fame and success unimaginable never since equalled.

It's all showy. Great for club playing, not as great on the records. No wonder Martin wanted to use session men on the studio stuff. But Paul, John, and George all agreed later that their favorite days as The Beatles was the cavern & Hamburg clubbing days. It was just more simplistic, fun, and rock n roll. No pressures or expectations. Just a band.

He's really not good. His fills just fall off, seemingly only so that he can make sure he gets back on the beat when he needs to. I think Pete had a good idea of what he wanted his parts to sound like, but he didn't have the skill to execute it. A better example of this is the original version that he recorded of Love Me Do where his timing is all over the map and at one point he changes the whole song feel by adding a skip beat.

Practice won't fix the innate rhythm & timing issues discernible here. That's something you've either an inherent inner instinctive metronome and feel for, or not. And that's just the start. Tuition, might have addressed the myriad of the other problems, an observable absence of musicality, nuance, and overplaying accompanied by heavy handedness & particularly heavy footedness, but using one's ears reveals a self-evident lack of natural aptitude in this example. Still playing no better than this after playing drums with John, Paul and George for more than two years? o.O !! As John said, 'he never improved'.
