Brian's associate Peter Brown describes this interview in his book "The Love You Make" (see pages 204-205, Pan Books, 1984). Brian had taken so many Tuinals he was "too groggy to sit up". Brown said "You can't go to your interview. You'll make a fool of yourself. You're full of pills and slurring like a drunk". Brian insisted on going. "Brian's voice came over the speakers slurred and deep, the syllables attenuated, yet what he said was undeniably eloquent."

I appreciate the comment but after listening to more of John Lennon's interviews, I no longer consider Peter Brown, Derek Taylor, or Niel Aspinall to be trustworthy sources on Beatle history. Lennon said those three men weren't honest about what really happened and they had a warped perception.

When the Beatles stopped touring his need for the Beatles was thus over. His Merseybeat era also had faded due to the Beatles change of composing. He could have sought out new bands but the Beatles touring & performing was his baby & that had ended. Without him it wouldn't have all happened & Beatles Millennials fans should read the history, & without doubt from 1963 the duo 5th Beatles were him & George Martin & the other four stated this. The packaging of the Beatles was his vision & going to America he was as important as the other four were. He has been criticized on bad deals made but the percentages was the norm & 2 years was the lifespan before the next fad came. He was loyal & loved them truly.

So sad when people look at the success of The Beatles, and think “they could’ve earned even MORE money”. As if that’s the most meaningful observation. Epstein was exactly what they needed. Without him, with a more exploitative manager, the whole thing would have fallen apart. They were basically loyal to each other, they trusted him mostly, and that was crucial to them having a supportive environment for their music. For example another manager would’ve insisted on them playing live towards the end of their career. The world would’ve lost some their best albums. England had its share of dishonest and greed-motivated music managers (Sharon Osbornes father for example) Brian Epstein was tremendous stroke of luck for the Beatles.

BTW, glad to hear that Brian (and the boys) liked the Monkees. They might not have been exactly comparable to the Beatles (the Monkees not playing their instruments on the tracks or writing their own tunes in the early days, etc), but they truly had a team of the best studio players in the USA (Carol Kay, Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, etc) and best songwriters (Boyce and Hart, Neil Diamond, Harry Nilsson, etc) in the world working to create their records. (See the excellent documentary film "The Wrecking Crew" for more about this 60s phenomenon of studio musicians who played on literally thousands of the top hits of the day). Much of the Monkees material has stood up very favorably to the test of time IMHO...

Such a loss of a wonderful man who perhaps didn't appreciate or look after himself enough. And we definitely would have had a more calm reasoned Beatles as a band. I reckon if they still had Brian then they wouldn't have completely split. They would have just gone off separately and not said anything and just get together once a year for a studio album. But maybe that wouldn't have been best but I reckon much more higher chances of Beatles not actually fully breaking up if Brian was still about. Think about it, you wouldn't have Klein sniffing around so badly. The band would have been more relaxed that things were not going hay wire and they wouldn't have to try to man the ship themselves and make music and be friends.

I never met him, of course, but I've always liked Brian. His oh so posh voice and gentle manners is such a refreshing combination when compared with the bragging and shouting matches of people in today's media. Brian simply had too much class for all of that. It is sad, however, that he apparently felt increasingly less useful as the manager of the Beatles, and that this eventually, as some say, would lead him to essentially take his own life. And I think you can almost hear his depression in this interview, which was recorded shortly before his death. His voice lacks his usual enthusiasm, and he slurs his words quite badly. And yet, he remains remarkably eloquent and polite as always. A professional until the end.

The sad part is that Brian Epstein had to keep his homosexuality in the closet because it was against the law to be gay in Britian in 1967.Homosexuality would be legalized a few months after he died. That was why John Lennon wrote "You got to hide you love away" that was in reference to Brian Epstein being gay.

Epstein's business associate Nat Weiss later recalled of this interview from March 1967, with Murray the K ... "Before he was to give a radio interview with Murray the K, I came into the room (in the Waldorf Towers) to find Brian slurring his language. Obviously he had taken several Nembutals. He had this interview coming up and there were people in the waiting room waiting to see him, and he was like this. ... I found the bottle. had to wrestle with him on the floor, throw the bottle out of the window of the hotel and just yell at him. Eventually, with coffee and things like that, we got him together and we took him to the interview." ... Epstein quickly sobers up and provides some fascinating insights into quite a variety of interesting subjects ...
