Madlingley Hall is one of the grandest of the many wonderful buildings owned by the University of Cambridge. It is the centre of the university's Institute of Continuing Education. It was built in 1543 and was taken by Queen Victoria in 1860 as the residence for her eldest son, the future King Edward VII, when he was an undergraduate at Cambridge University. Edward was visited in this house by his father Prince Albert who died suddenly just a few weeks after the visit and whose death brought a premature end to the studies of the young prince.
I have been lucky enough to be able to stay in this historic house whenever I visit Cambridge, as I did once again last week. The Saloon, where this recording was made is one of the most beautiful rooms at Madingley, and provided a perfect location for the latest addition to my new Beautiful Acoustics series. It has a superb acoustic and wonderful views of the extensive gardens for which Madlingley Hall is rightly famous.
