Maj 7th chords are so wonderful because they add a sort of 'velvet textured tension' which hangs in the air, and this can be released when you go back to the major root triad. C Maj 7th -> C...F Maj 7th -> F. Rinse and repeat. Wonderful to dance back and fourth between them. Check your blood pressure before you sit at the piano. Then after playing these arpeggios for 15 minutes or so, check again, and I guarantee a reasonable drop in pressure and stress. Happy, healthy playing. :-)

A lot of these dreamy like chords were used with electric pianos back in the 1970’s if you listen to the fender roses electric piano you heard people playing that kind of chording it was kind of slow and soft with the tynes of the electric piano ringing. On today’s digitals they sound really beautiful but the electric pianos of the day made it sound quite vintage. Hahaha!!! But yea. You will find a lot of those sounding chords in 1970’s music with the electric piano.

So what exactly is an inversion? When I look at my piano book for example a Cmaj7 start with CEG and ends on B Then a Cmaj7 first inversion starts with EGB and ends on C. Does first inversion mean we are starting on the 2nd note?

whats the new root after the inversion? , is it the same rule as triad inversion ?
@PianoteOfficial

The root note is always the same. It's just in a different position within the chord. The root note is NOT always the bottom note. It's the note that the chord is built around.

You inspired me to learn first 8 bars of Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1. Alternating bars of subdominant maj. 7th in 1st inversion and tonic maj. 7th in 2nd both sharing the same top note. I found it helpful to first play the inversions as triads and when proficient flatten their roots. I think this trick is very helpful generally with all 7ths maj, min and dominant especially when inverted: a slight modification of the simpler form. The root’s usually played separately in the bass anyway, like M.Satie, so why double it?

On your left hand you're NOT using your ring finger. I've noticed I don't use my middle finger, but only on my left hand. My right I do NOT use my ring finger. Should I switch my left now as I've just started in March or is it more of a preference/comfort issue?
