I've always found at least with Macdon draper headers, not sure about JD headers, is that if your reel up down limits and fore/aft adjustments are set right on the header, you should be able to put it almost all the way out and down just to where the teeth are almost scratching the ground. The pickup teeth should lift it up the mat and fluff it and pull it back towards the sickle. That's basically the reason for having "pickup teeth" on a reel. I always let the reel do the work and you find that you are actually cutting a couple inches off the ground which is higher in some cases than cutting soybeans. If there's a lot of downed wheat, I've been known to unlock the header and put in float mode as you do in beans and that works well too because the header will follow the contour of the ground better. But like you said it seems to always do better going against the way its laying. But I know when its someone else's machine they have it set the way they want it and you just go with the flow and do the best you can. I always liked cutting downed wheat, especially if you are dropping straw. Perhaps that makes me a little bit psycho and sometimes its a little nerve wracking. That and your sample seems like its always a little bit trashier because you are processing all that straw. I just like watching the carpet roll in and generally its really good wheat when its lodged like that.

Wow .. Beautiful Big Sky scenery and wheat fields out there in Montana. I don't know why they chop up all the straw and waste it?? That's like blowing $$$ on the ground. We custom harvest 2000 acres of wheat here in Western New York every year - two John Deere 680's and and a 780. The straw is always in VERY high demand .. and is sold months before the wheat is even harvested. They make a KILLING on it!!
@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking

I don’t know. Maybe it doesn’t pay to save it and bale it here. They cut it so there’s less residue when it’s time to plant in it.

@@ZeorianHarvestingTrucking Hi, Thank you for the reply .. have always enjoyed viewing you're terrific videos of the harvest seasons over the years. Montana is such a beautiful state! I worked in the railroad industry for many years and was stationed in Western Montana for a time. Incredible sights and scenery! As for the straw question? There are A LOT of BIG dairy farms here in New York state. Straw is always in high demand and fetches a premo price!! The square balers are always right behind us in the combines. They bale it and load it up on tractor trailers as fast as our 3 combines can harvest the 2000 acres and get out of their way!

It is amazing to see the abundant earth and man's technology in harvesting that bounty. 100 years ago a good threshing crew could thresh 300-400 bushels in a day's work. (and that didn't count cutting, shocking and hauling the wheat to the place where it would be processed - as my dad always joked "it seemed like they always threshed behind a shelter belt where there was zero wind on the hottest days of the year). If you look at old photos of threshing crews, the men wore wool clothing with their shirts buttoned up. These combines hold at least that much and fill within 20min or less.
