This monologue was quite challenging for me. When I would practice this monologue by myself, I did the bad actor thing of prejudging this monologue as a comedy thus getting into my head and bringing up one of insecurities as an actor: I may not be as funny as I think I am. Don't get me wrong, I love finding the punch line or timing something just right to where even the stranger behind me chuckles. But comedy is a science and you have to do it just right for it to come across as something hilarious to a multitude of people - I think of "Who's line is it anyways?", "The Office", "The Big Bang Theory" to even "I Love Lucy" (who remembers the episode where Lucy and Ethel worked in the chocolate factory?). Hell, even watch you favorite stand-up comedian and see how they present the joke. All of these examples gives you an array of comedy that consist of the following: timing, having a punch line, knowing your audience, and relatability. Even then, I'm sure the science to comedy is much more complex than that.
AND THIS IS WHAT MY BRIAN THINKS! But that thought didn't last long as my next thought was ,"Fuck it, let's give this a try," and voila!
I could not have done this alone as my acting teacher- Wolf Bodison- was able to give me constructive feedback throughout my session and reminded me to just be myself in the monologue. The comedy, the drama will come naturally.
