This is for your listener going to Japan. My wife was born in Tokyo, so I’ve been there often visiting her family. Once I discovered the Kagurazaka neighborhood of Tokyo, it has become the photographic center of all my visits. You can spend a day, a month, or a lifetime there, and you’ll never run out of new pictures to take. Any camera I’ve taken there has produced wonderful results, but the last few times there with a Lumix S5 and the kit 20-60mm zoom have been the best. On Sunday, they close the main drag off to cars just to give us photographers a taste of heaven.

Re Peak Design Outdoor bags: man I love Peak Design gear for everyday carry - I have bought a disturbing proportion of what they make - but the biggest weakness with their backpacks is that they are heavy and their harness systems are amateur hour. I've been wanting them to do a more serious adventure backpack for a while, but that harness system shows they simply do not appear to understand how serious backpack harnesses are made. They intentionally buck most of the successful design patterns, despite those being successful for a reason... The running vest shoulder straps will likely be very hot and do not fit all body types as well as a typical padded strap that just has to find one line to sit comfortably. Next let's look at the back panel. It looks like a cheap hiking backpack from like 2010. All the high end backpacks have since moved to systems like Osprey's AirScape (EVA foam with ridges and mesh over top so there are air channels across your back, Gregory has an equivalent system) and then to trampoline back-panels like Osprey's AirSpeed which have only mesh and then *several* inches of air contacting your back. Peak Design even made a dig at these "baroque" systems despite Osprey selling an absurd number of these bags because they are incredibly comfortable on the back, even with heavy loads. Lastly, the hip belt. It looks pretty meagre. The padded wings are pretty short so they will only come around the sides of your hips and perhaps a little bit in front. Most serious hiking/backpacking bags have hip belt wings that come basically all the way around your hips (and some basically have an internal frame to even out the load transfer to all parts of your hips). In short, I really wish they had just done a collab with Osprey or Gregory or Deuter since those people *know* how to make an adventure backpack suspension. They could have basically just put an Osprey suspension/frame on a PD Travel Pack 45L, and it would have been great. This line they're putting out looks like Shimoda but worse (Shimoda having a meh harness but good camera features).

Thank you guys so much for the Japan travel advice, definitely taking notes for next year. Maybe we’ll trade the day in Nara for a more traditional experience in the mountains (preferably without Chris’ extracurricular bathroom activities). We’ll have to check out Gordon’s video and the surrounding towns Jaron suggested too. May have to get a family vote on who’s right about the food options, Chris or Jaron and Jordan. Also, thanks for the reminder to bring wide angle lenses for Tokyo Chris. I’m always debating which lenses to bring until the last minute then over packing. Jordan, please let me know if you come across the info for the guide you suggested. Thanks again, much appreciated. And please, we need the three amigos travel channel.

My all time favorite camera/lens experience was when the Canon M came out and I had the 22mm lens on it. It fit in my jacket pocket and I took it everywhere. For a comfortable camera the 5Dmk4 with the tamron 35-150. I still grab that for events where I don’t want to be stressed by the gear.

I'm a 11 year Tokyo resident. I've used MapCamera extensively. But, recently, I don't like them. Their personal service has become a little bit "impersonal". They've actually downsized their physical store from two buildings to the one. I suspect, they are focussing more on the online business. Fujiya Camera in Nakano is a far more enjoyable experience and feels more personal.

As with everything..Opportunity is everything isn't it?..Its absolutely CRUCIAL in most instances. many photographers and creatives don't get the opportunity that was presented to her. At 23 years old and still needing to learn how to do video and other technical stuff for her role, she was able to fly around the world and learn on the job for the largest website out there. People see these stories and think that this is normal. No this isn't normal at all, for MANY. I'm glad she got the opportunity, my point is that her backstory will not exist for 99% of photographers. Her amazing growth and experiences will carry her well into the future. And it also helps her that she's not a POC that people will say is a dei hire. Especially with companies wanting way more experience than what they're paying for, she was allowed to not have all of the requirements and still learn and grow and that's freaking amazing. Her story is a fairy tale for many creatives. And if you think that's nothing and maybe I'm bitching, be that creative talent that is running around and nobody will give them a shot. Hell I myself remember asking one of these KZitemrs almost 10 years ago if I could help them out at the studio or learn from them.. all I got back was deer in headlights look. They talking about a lot about it a lot but they don't really do anything. So many creative out here need a shot. They don't need people who don't care saying good luck.

I was happy to hear someone ask about the physics of camera lenses, as a physicist I have been interested in getting deeper into lens design and modelling of the elements but have not been able to find much in the way of literature on the subject. Would love to hear if anyone has any links to the physics of how lenses are built and if there is any software models out there that are available I would love to play with them. Most of the knowledge I have is around single wavelength (laser) work with respect to columnizing a beam and thin lens approximations.

But when i tried our photo clubs old Nikon D80, gotta say i loved the colors and textures on it, I almost switched to Nikon lol only used it for a week, maybe that's why it felt special. Since you mentioned the Canon battery thing, I’ve got a question for you. Back when the RF 24-105/2.8L was released, you were part of the KZitem crowd that acted like it was the end of the world that the video related aperture ring didn’t work in photo mode even though most RF lenses have a control ring that can be configured for aperture. Why has there been no mention that it does work in photo mode on the R5m2?

When Canon does stupid things like restricting the functionalities of their new camera just to annoy users and make them buy new high margin batteries, it really really makes me want to jump to Nikon or Sony even if I have been a Canon user for over 30 years and currently use an R5+R10 but have a couple of 5Ds and even an F-1. And it isn't just the partially compatible batteries, it is loads of ridiculous decisions and deliberate strategy to not offer firmware upgrades for example, why isn't my R10 autofocus better than an R50 autofocus, why can't I get the functionalities of the lesser, cheaper camera that uses the same sensor and the same processor? Is it just because it was released a few months later? This is unacceptable. Canon doesn't seem to understand that the camera market is shrinking and that Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm are increasing their market share whilst Canon is loosing its' market share to all three of them. With continuously making silly moves like this it won't go well for them. For that reason as well as the lack of APS-C lens support, in the last couple of months I have advised people who wanted to get their first camera to upgrade from their phone to NOT buy the Canon cameras I own and to go for Sony or Fuji in APS-C or Nikon, Sony and Fuji in full frame and they both ended up buying a Sony A6700 with the 18-135 for £100 more than the R10+18-150 which is a better camera and a much much better long term choice of ecosystem than Canon. The only hope I have for my historically favourite brand is that they start failing as bad as Nikon and then come back from near death with a fighting spirit.

I understand where Becca is coming from, I’m somebody who naturally wants to make sure everybody in a conversation gets a chance to speak. While I’m happy to answer questions, I am legitimately curious about the people I’m talking to and want to make sure I’m not dominating the conversation. I also think in a setting like this, the beauty of it is that not only to you get to hear about the guest’s experience, but you also get to hear a different perspective from the hosts if the guest is also asking good questions in return. There is an inherent dynamic of a podcast guest being the one answering questions, which is why I enjoyed that Becca was also tossing it back. It felt natural.
