There is something about the leather handle kabar that just feels awesome , they have a really good weight balance . They look simple on camera but holding one and seeing that kabar quality up close in person is killer. The cool thing with Beckers is modding them yourself, even a simple poor man mod looks awesome. You can stencil the scales with a wood burning tool strip the coating and patina the blade plus buy a kydex sheath but still even with that crappy sheath it looks killer.

Hey Donnie B. ! Put size 15, plumbing O' Rings in the grooves of the Ka-Bar handle, for Better Grip. - A 4" inch piece of Bicycle inner tube "Ranger Band" on the BK7, The Grip becomes Fantastic. Not too fond of the KaBar as an only knife- carried one in '71-72 and couldnt wait to swap it out for a Buck 120 "General" which I carried for @ 40 years before it sprouted legs and walked off. Do wish I had hung on to the KaBar, tho, "just cuz", as it was part of my life back in the day and because it was the ONLY KaBar or similar knife with a chrome or nickled blade for humid climates.... I like the serrations for certain cutting chores, would like to see more knives with that offering. The BK7 edge needs an inch or two serration, the back-clip sharpened, and maybe the allens holding the grips on given a wee drop of loctite and it would truly be the "superior" knife... but that's just me! Thanks again for another great presentation, Donnie B!

Thanks for the video. I've seen two Ka-bar fighting utility knives break at the handle, both times by people throwing them and they hit on the side of the blade and handle, rather than sticking in. So I would recommend that people not throw them. You would not want to throw your only weapon in a fight, whether it was a cougar or a person attacking you, so it's not a very useful knife skill to begin with. If people really want to throw knives, there are throwing knives for sale as well as shuriken.

I stripped the coating on my BK7, put rosewood scales on it, and bought a custom leather sheath that is wet fitted for excellent retention. Made a good knife a great knife. Oh yeah, almost forgot..I did a hand rubbed satin finish on it too, although admittedly, it's not as purdy now that I've used the crap out of it, lol. However, doing that sanding on it thinned it out just a tiny bit behind the edge, so it cuts even better now, yet is still plenty strong enough to chop and baton. I had to sand it because it had vertical grind lines in the blade once I stripped it.I also squared up the spine for scraping ferro rods or scraping fatwood fluff. I put a lot of work into it, and added about 120 bucks to the overall cost with the scales and sheath, but damn, it's an excellent knife now. It's my go to blade when I want a larger blade for light chopping. I've used the crap out of it.

Get a second cut file and flatten the sides of the handle, then blend it in to a oval shape. Then use sand paper to smooth out. Put tape in line with the grooves, then scribe the edges with sharp knife. Then use a squre needle file to re-cut the grooves. Finish with oil, then seal with a leather balm. Then when dry seal with natural shoe polish. Then the knife is brilliant! Good utility knife, and self defence knife. Always wondered why the guard is bent towards the hand? Any thoughts?
@DonnieBAllDay

The guard is the way it is because it's not a designed combat knife. They used an old hunting knife factory and just kept stamping out hunting knives but painted black. Thats why the KA-BAR is a good utility knife but a horrible combat knife. Shit balance, shit grip, shit tang. Great steel.

You are absolutely correct. I think the wood chop test is purely to show off the strength of the edge. A weak blade will warp, chip or dull during wood chops. It's nice to know that having a knife for absolute survival, that your edge can handle even the things you "shouldn't" need it for.

I carried a Ka-Bar in the field when I was in the Marine Corps. We used them as utility knives and thought that the issue bayonet made a better fighting knife. We broke a few Ka-Bars using them and they usually broke the tip off more than at the handle where the tang starts even though I've seen a few of those breaks too. I sharpened the knives for my platoon and I used to file the false edge down to where the point was more centered with the handle instead of up swept. It made the point a lot stronger too since it took the thin part of the point down. Never made sense to me to have the point up swept instead of centered. They seemed to hold an edge pretty well and you could really get them sharp. One last thing, I never saw a Ka-Bar in the Marine Corps that had the USMC on the blade or the sheath. They were plain black sheaths and I think the blade simply had the OLEAN NY on the blade. Don't remember if the KA-Bar was above the OLEAN NY or not.

Then you can comfortably cut some wood without the uncomfortable use of a choil. The bushcraft set up is often short knife without choil. Axe or hatchet or machete. Large blades are nice to play around with. But for real work you get out the machete or axe.
