Love your tips! I started rowing competitively about 5 years ago and love the sport for overall fitness, cardio and power. Although I agree with you about not overreaching at the catch, I can't help but notice you don't have full leg compression. It looks like you could compress a little more (while still holding your back and shoulders upright) so that your shins are more vertical. Admittedly, that also depends on what kind of piece you are doing - if you're doing an all out sprint like 500m at a higher stroke rating, you don't want to over compress either, so your angle might be ok. But for more medium range intervals 5 min or more you may gain a little more length in the leg drive of your stroke. And, as a relatively shorter athlete, that might help you gain a few more meters. Love your videos, you got me through lots of steady state solo erging during the early spring part of the pandemic. Keep up the awesome work!

Hey!! thank you! and yes there is no shortage of small details and those are some great points. We do our best to give beneficial info to the widest group possible. Working with someone one on on alot of details can certainly change, depending on height, torso Length, femur length and arm Length and if that person more endurance based or power based. These general rule of thumbs have been a good starting point for most people who are looking to make improvements! We love hearing from you and love the feedback!

If the chain wobbles, oil it. Of course, you can move the handle past the clip. The longer the stroke the better. Just make sure shins never go past vertical. Don't open your back too early. With a lower damper setting, you need to produce more leg speed at the catch in order to get tension on the chain right away as the flywheel will be spinning at a higher speed.
@printedpropscreations3017
2 жыл бұрын
I think the point with not going past the clip was to prevent reaching - obviously you can go beyond the clip but a lot of the time people end up reaching by rolling the shoulders forward which isn’t beneficial and can cause injury too

THANK YOU!!!!! Releasing my arms quickly after the pull is going to be a game changer, I know it!! Thanks guys!!
@toomuch9762
23 күн бұрын
It’s not releasing your arms quickly, your arms should release before you bend your knees. It’s has nothing to do with speed. You don’t want your arms having to loop over your knees. You watch pro rowers doing it they go back to the catch position slow and controlled and then explode on the stroke. Plenty of actual rower pages on here giving advice. They give good tips here but could be better. Want to know how to row? Ask a rower not a crossfitter
@marcmartineau7858
Жыл бұрын
The proper form is shins vertical at the catch and the sequence is legs-body-arms. For the recovery, it’s arms-body-legs. If you don’t bring you shins vertical at the catch, without over reaching, you are losing power and efficiency. It’s 1 o’clock at the catch and 11 o’clock at the end of the stroke. If you row for speed and have the fastest split time, that’s when form will break. Rowing lonf=g distance endurance sessions focusing on the stroke with the force curve on on the PM will get you there.

I have been trained in the arts of Maruchan for over 40 years training some of the world's top nemar warriors. The way nemar warriors row at our temple is by having another student hold a leaf above the fan contraption. If u can keep the leaf calmly floating in the air with your strokes, you have proven true form like a nemar warrior. If the leaf fall, you have failed to achieve our greatness. This is how a true warrior must row. This is the way.

so i knew fleet stay flat on pad and i have never rowed like Khalipa with the break at the far end but awesome technical explanations about the why. never seen Kristi so serious ! beneficial to think about and see back angle and form for longer rows vs shorter sprints when ideal form will break down a little. helpful to know not to go too far forward and not to round back to get further forward for length. awesome content! ski erg would be good- feet don t stay flat on ground right and arms as straight as possible as long as possible ?

love the feedback, and we can def do one on the ski as well! and yes arms as strength as possible as long as possible, "when the arms bend the power ends"

great athlete- but, as a former competitive rower, I note 2 big issues if this is about efficiency... coach, you say arms legs legs arms; rowers say legs/back/arms. Her stroke loses efficiency exactly in the phase between - back- that you leave out of the mantra. Her stroke is 2 phase LEGS/back- ARMS/back. There is no 'hanging on the oar' at the beginning which sets her up for the mid phase, she is already halfway through opening up when her legs are extended...the example stroke at 3:27 is particularly bad, in case anyone is trying to copy it is a textbook example of 'opening up too soon". Secondly, the discussion of damper treats it primarily as a resistance setting. It is better thought of as a fine calibration device that allows for the drag coefficient of the wheel to be set to what the rower would experience on water. Same machine, different altitude needs higher setting for same drag factor (that's why each machine has a self diagnostic). Rowers usually set between 3-5, but machines can vary a LOT. Therefore damper setting is not what to look at. 1st time on a new machine, use self diagnostic: Menu: More options: Display drag factor, Adjust (100-130 lightweight/heavyweight). That is reliable/meaningful number. I rower at 103 DF- sometimes that means 3.5, sometime 6, depends on the machine. About power.... this idea that higher setting=more power is incorrect. All that happens is that wheel slows down faster with high damper setting. Too slow rpm at catch means you can't engage an explosive leg movement. To see this in action put display screen on force curve in the display window, and try different settings from 1-10 and note the shape and amplitude of the strokes. Consider the first part is the leg drive. You will see a clear pattern, with the steepest curve somewhere between 3-5 (ding ding) on most machines. Higher settings have rounded hills- leg drive is lacking explosiveness. An(imperfect) analogy: cyclist in 10th gear climbing a hill, thinking he is showing power, when another in 3rd blows by...more efficient strokes/rhythm and doing more work.
