I knew when I was 11 that I had to be an actor, but it wasn't until I was 51 that I did my first acting role and 52 when I had my first West End role. I study every day, and search the web for great insights, such as your series on KZitem. I even became the oldest student at Rose Bruford College in the UK in a 12 months Theatre Acting Course. I believe a more mature actor can bring so much experience to play whether on stage, film or TV - I adore my craft! Never give in to the naysayers.

So glad to read this. I've been considering going back to acting school. Getting all my ducks in a row (as we say here) before jumping in to the audition process. Good to hear it is going well for you.

Fantastic advice! When 51 and preparing yourself for your first role, what did you do to prepare yourself for that first audition? I'm 52, have been acting in community theatre for almost 30 years, and did so in high school before that. However, I've just recently decided I'd like to dip my toe into the professional acting pool. I am enrolled in an acting class that starts in January, but am looking for advice on anything else that I can do to be prepared. Headshots forthcoming, but what else should I be working on? Thank you so much in advance...your comment above was VERY encouraging to someone who was worried that 'the ship had sailed'.

I did a bunch of commercials and some tv shows and small independent films when I was in my 20’s. Then I left the industry and went to focus on a music and photography career. Now I’m 45 and starting to feel like getting back into acting.

You answered my question without even asking it 😊 However; although I look 35 I will be turning 40, I recently made the descision to vet into film and hopefully going to workshops. I'm in a littlebit tougher situation in that I am Hispanic as well, even though films and tv have been opening up to other races more and more, it is still very hard to climb that latter. What advice can you give me? Thank You

It’s the weirdest thing. I was told by a director that he doesn’t know where I fit. I was told that I’m pretty but not Halle Berry pretty. Personally I think it’s all in the eye of the beholder and after assessing his comment, it just made me work harder so that my talent will do the talking. I’m getting older and still steady at it so I believe it will turn out well.

Thank you so much for this. So encouraging and helpful. I'm reading an acting business book right now that had one page (written by a man) mainly addressing later in life actors (esp. women) and while he made valid points, the way it was written could make someone who isn't confident or determined want to jump off a bridge. I'm relieved your video is nothing like that. Nothing is impossible.

Erica, Thank you so much for answering my question! I admit that I am good at persistence and practice, but patience . . . not so much. I regularly remind myself to stand back and look at what I have accomplished and the talented people I have been blessed to be able to work with or at least have gotten very close. Enjoying the journey and hoping to meet you in person soon.

Following my desire and affinity as a performing artist a little later in life, and I thank God for every chance in the room and for every job booked. We are soooo blessed to live in a country where we can pursue multiple careers and realize that God is a good Father who wants to give us the desires of our heart. We just have to put Him first.
