OK, some of you people don't read or keep up with the news. Years ago after a major hurricane in Florida several invasive lionfish, which are NOT native to the Atlantic or the Caribbean somehow got lose and made their way into the Atlantic ocean. They bred and multiplied and multiplied and so on and so on. Because they are NOT native to the Atlantic or Caribbean other fish have no fear of them and they get eaten at an astounding rate. Additionally, lionfish have no natural predators in the Atlantic or Caribbean - again because they are NOT native to these oceans. Scientists who are doing research on lionfish have discovered that they are eating so much fish that they are actually getting liver diease. Also, they bred like water-rabbits. They can bred two to three times a year and can fertilize up to 2,000 eggs at a time - you do the math. So now can you see how they could overwhelm and destroy all of the native Atlantic and Caribbean fish. They are making their way up the Atlantic coast and can be found as far as Massachusetts. Many U.S. states and Caribbean islands have started allowing divers to use spears in an effort to eradicate as many as possible. We will never fully eradicate them all because humans can only go so far down into the ocean. Unlike many other fish, Lionfish can be found at many ocean depths so the fish that are further down cannot be eradicated. Thankfully, people realized that they taste pretty good and now not only are the hunting them for eradication, they are hunting them to sell to restaurants and for personal consumption. Yes, it's a shame that these fish have to be eradicated but allowing them to bred unencumbered would be vastly worse and would wipe out all of the native Atlantic and Caribbean fishes - even if man were not eating them. We do the same thing on land with non-native bugs, plants and animals. We as humans screw up and we as humans try to correct our mistakes. Please people, educate yourselves before you make uninformed comments.

Something that’s important to remember is that pet owners (especially owners of exotic pets like fish, aquatic invertebrates, insects, reptiles, amphibians and anything like that) need to do so responsibly. I’ve heard of aquarium owners who just dump their aquariums in a river when they can’t take care of it any longer. It’s incredibly irresponsible behavior like that that leads to problems like the lionfish infestation in the Caribbean.

I think if there could be 6 lionfish hunts in 2023 all at the same time world wide these lionfish would be pushed way back. In deeper waters, they're off the reefs and can't feed as they would like and would die off that way but that's when the robots should be able to just zap them with electricity and kill them in place that way.

@kentonkirkpatrick5225
3 жыл бұрын
Do we know the mating mechanics of this fish? There was an insect (mosquito? Fruit fly?) that we wanted to eliminate. We learned that when the female mates, she cannot mate again. So we captured a bunch of males and subjected them to radiation. This rendered them sterile but able to mate. Every female they mated with was taken "off the table" as far as reproducing. Does anyone know about the Lion fish? maybe it's the same thing. So don't KILL the males just sterilize them and let them mate. The approach we're using now is futile. We may clear the coastal areas for a while but unless Everyone does this (Cuba, Bahamas, Mexico, etc.) it will never work. We've got to outthink these little bastards.

3 жыл бұрын
Probably not. Most of the endangered species have a hard time to reproduce, have a niche habitat or food source. These fish doesnt appear naturally in huge colonies (are very spread out), which makes them hard to catch compered to other species. One lion fish release about 10.000 eggs once a week all year, eat basically everything and can survive most places. When they doesnt have any natural predators they will overpopulate, destroy the balance and move on, just like the huge king crab colonies does to the sea bottom. Wherever they are left untouched, a underwater desert its whats left. Of course the ecosystem repairs itself, but it takes quite some time, so keeping the population under control are crucial. But than again, if they overpopulate, predators will most likely come, but for now its not so dumb intensifying and controlling the amount of invasive species.

I only say Asians because that’s where there seems to be the most demand for things like this. Don’t get me wrong I’m definitely not a tree hugger or animal rights activist and I have no problem hunting or fishing at all in fact I do it myself. It just turns my stomach to see no regulations being enforced and the over harvesting that takes place in those areas along with the lack of concern about bringing a species to the brink of non existence.

Grunge Gopher you obviously never paid attention in science class. Lion fish SHOULD NOT BE IN THE ATLANTIC. They are killing the native fish that are SUPPOSED to be there. Food chains work because there are enough predators to balance out the prey, and vice versa. Lion fish do not have any predators in the Atlantic. So they just keep having babies and more babies and eating all the prey. You can't just throw a bunch of fish in a pool and call it a day. Every species has different needs. So this guy is helping.
