I would add to the 'signs' of possible pharyngeal dysphagia multiple and/or excessive repeat swallows. Although not evidence, repeat swallows are indicative of significant pharyngeal residue/ retention.

I'd highly appreciate this video program for the dysphagia. My mom (90 yr) has diagnosed with difficulty swallowing since this summer. Then she lost her weight, and was lacking of power of living. However, I noticed several video of medical institutes of the universities, these ones led to help her life. Thank you very much again for the precious suggestions.

It is important to call this test a nursing swallow screen or just a swallow screen. When we use the word "bedside" to label a screening measure, doctors get confused and think that a formal full "bedside swallow evaluation" was done already by the speech-language pathologist. It is important to clarify that a SCREEN can be done by any healthcare provider, but it is usually the nurse. It needs to be documented in the chart as a screen (this is not a formal "evaluation" or "swallow test"). Correct use of words in the medical chart can help prevent errors! It is just a screen. Even the extent of the oral motor examination that this SLP did here is much more thorough than that of a nursing swallow screen.

I know that you have technically assessed swallowing, and coughing ability, but we were taught not to give them a large amount of water, and instead give them the smallest amount that they could swallow to avoid possible aspiration and aspiration pneumonia... any thoughts? Great video otherwise

I have a dislocated hyoid bone, where it is pulled down and sitting on the thyroid cartilage, from a botched plastic surgery that surgeons are not certain to confirm even though two orthopedic doctors are certain just from palpating the area. Can a swallow test illustrate the action and position of the hyoid bone?

If I cannot swallow solids or even small particles, would a referral to a Gastroenterology Specialist (rather than a Speech Pathologist) be best?

You'd need the Speech pathologist as they could help with the swallowing process through therapy. The problem is not the type of bolus, but the dysphagia (problem swallowing).

Nice, I have difficulty swallowing with aspirations I think due to Multiple Sclerosis but my doctor (I've seen two) in France say multiple sclerosis is not the cause. So I am a bit lost and I always feel anguished when I must eat :( :( Because like tonight for example I took a bit of potatoe, then I felt it was blocked, 30 min later it got me cough when inhaling like is something is on the wrong way. And now it's been 3 hours and I still feel not well especially in the breathing system I feel :'( :'(

I don't know the protocol in France but if you were in the US and if you haven't had a videofloroudcopic swallow study then I'd recommend you get one asap. Then consult with a speech-language pathologist experienced with adult dysphagia. That SLP should be able to look at your swallow study and make recommendations regarding thickened liquids (if needed) and swallowing exercises. You would definitely need an SLP for that part bc which exercises are dependent on what type of dysfunction are happening during the swallow. Also...I don't see why this wouldn't be a product of your MS...that makes no sense...
