I think the main reason why Bee and PuppyCat was such a good show is because it's a show full of soft cotton candy like visuals with a hint of depression sprinkled in everywhere where the viewers can both enjoy the wacky and quiet moments mixed with the casual character moments that the show offers.

Is melancholy the word you're looking for? A bubblegum-colored show with wacky college jokes but an undertone of melancholy that-personally, I find-can only be birthed by the jarring burst into adulthood that one undergoes as they find themselves alone as young adults. You find yourself standing on your own two feet, and maybe the fact bee finds out her true nature is symbolic for how we might be shocked by how well we do for ourselves. But it still feels like a point of no return, a transition that can't be stopped which works in big part because while the show has the adventure time aesthetic (a show that in itself I feel captures coming of age quite well, but it's from a child's perspective as they understand it's starting to happen, while this show it's already kinda happening) and looks really kiddie and in many ways it acts kiddie with the way it's set up as an adventure of the week format and jokes and all but then there's these constant undercurrents of real life just hitting the characters which I feel is best underlined by cardamon's heartrending breakdown in the wake of the space donut episode. This show speaks to a certain yearning young adults feel strongest of all, a wish for purpose, a dread of isolation by a lack of purpose, the pain and fear of hitting a dead end in life...just...so many applicable interpretations and perceptions of the show. This is a show that runs almost entirely on emotion, and it doesn't hide it. And for that, I feel, it works best.

SPOILERS!!!! Actually, I think your dead daughter theory has a good chance of being canon. The characters always point out how Bee is immature or the she never grew up. One thing is that Bee acts as if she’s a child. What if since the dad imported memories into the robot of human Bee, she can’t develop since she only has the memories and mindset of a child. That’s why the characters always point out how childish Bee is, and she acts as if she hasn’t gotten the chance to mature.
@technopoptart

well, maybe more she can only develop as a child would develop since she does seem to have the capacity to learn and grow she just doesnt do it in a productive manner

I think that line was a double meaning. Not only does she still act fairly childish, but she also _physically_ hasn't grown up. It's one of the many moments that takes a completely different meaning after episode 10 since, even if she was upgraded over time to appear like she's aging, she's probably stopped growing completely ever since she lost her dad as he can't help her get older anymore.

A legitimately slept-on aspect of why this series is so good (no mention of it in the video at all, not much in the comments) is the incredible OST by Baths. His music adds such a wonderfully immersive blanket of comfort that somehow manages to match every moment so perfectly. I don't even know what genre tag to put on it, but it makes for some wonderful background music, both during the show and in isolation of it, and it has gone on to become one of my biggest personal sources of compositional inspiration in my own work c:

Bee and Puppycat was part of a somewhat nostalgic period for me, back when I was deeper into western animation in the early 2010s, including these sorts of Internet animations. I first watched it in 2013 when the pilot episode dropped on the Cartoon Hangover youtube channel. I kept up with episodes 1-4 as they came out, but had no idea what the production schedule was like (which made the section where you explained it pretty interesting). I probably gravitated to it in part because of the Adventure Time stoner humor or just the general similarities in tone and comedy, since I adored that show back then. Beyond that, I just love the lackadaisically (somewhat) surreal atmosphere and lovely aesthetics of the Bee and Puppycat. Of course, some of the “wandering while unsure of one’s place in the world” undercurrents had gone over my head since I was a child at the time, but I remember feeling a vague sense of groundedness due to those types of realistic elements in the characterization, even if I didn’t wholly understand them. I finally went and finished the other episodes today when you spoiler warned for the end-of-season twist, and it’s always a pleasant whiplash when I revisit a series years later and appreciate it even more as my perspective on it shifts in some crucial ways. Looking forward to that 2nd season whenever that gets officially released, and I’m glad to be back to keeping up with this show.

I love Bee and Puppycat so much and this was a lovely analysis! I'm kind of glad I was too broke back in the day to put money into the Kickstarter, I think it probably would have soured my experience with the show. I remember the VRV thing being a really big kick in the teeth not just for Bee and Puppycat but for all of Frederator's web series, I feel like they all kind of fizzled out when they made that decision and that is really unfortunate. Still, my Puppycat plush is in a spot where I can see it all day while I work.

I was obsessed with this show from the time the pilot came out, for all the reasons you said! Now that I'm an adult and going through more of the problems that Bee was, it was especially relatable in my recent rewatch. I'm sad though that I ended up being so disappointed with the eventual Netflix release. It retconned too much for me, like Bee and Deckard's mutual crush, Bee's personality also felt different/more flat, and it added way too many new characters at once, which took the focus away from the core cast 😢 Plus after the crammed recap episodes, the pace draaagged- I feel like 11 minute episodes were so much better of a format for this show. And the longer episodes just added a lot more slow gags that went nowhere, or more plot mysteries that went unresolved. I love getting to see a discussion of this show before the reboot bc it really was so unique and special, and I feel like that was lost in the new version. Maybe it was like you said where once it was going through a higher power, like Netflix, what made it special had to be scrapped?

It amazing how well you broke down each aspect of the show including both the development and characters. Do you have a favorite character out of the bunch? Mine would have to be the cool and supportive Cass. I hope she stays a major character in season two and gets to interact more with Toast too!

Making a robot a child to help the new AI in it's developmental growth isn't a new scifi idea. It's the backstory to Big Guy and Rusty.

I watched Bee & Puppycat so I could appreciate this video more. That was an hour well spent! There’s something about that mix of sweetness and melancholy that really appeals to me. And side note, I love that Cass is named after Castaspella from She-Ra.

I am happy to see someone cover this series in detail. I remember when I first found it back in 2014 during high school. I was enamored by the beautiful color scheme; the chill laidback atmosphere between the characters and the hilarious jokes with Puppycat. When I started, I accidentally started with first episode before going back for pilot and working my way from there. I was fascinated by Puppycat’s backstory and Bee’s character. I am happy someone brought up the problem with VRV as I was one of those people who waited two years for the second half and I was soul crushed that I couldn’t watch it due to region locking. So I waited another two years and I was so excited to see the second half. It was worth it with the character progression and the story of growing up. I agree with your point about it’s humor being too relaxed at times, as the cicada joke is alright but the cleavage crab was annoying. I like the introspection of male ladybug asking if there is anyone out there. My personal favorite aspect is the horror as it was very noticeable along side the chill atmosphere. I found it interesting and it always kept you on you toes. An underrated aspect is the music as I find myself listening to the Jellyfish song as it has-like the show-a sense of calmness and sadness to it. Now as an adult after rewatching it in preparation for season two, I found myself understanding and relating to characters like Bee and Deckard as I question what I want to do. I am very excited to see where their stories go next and if certain mysteries will be solved. I love this and I have taking a peek at you other videos, I have to say I am impressed with your level of detail and analysis of topics on the magical girl genre. Keep up the amazing work and have nice day/evening.

I'm so happy there are now 16 episodes of this on Netflix! It's SUCH a strange show, but, as you mention, weirdly soothing. There are so many more wacky characters introduced too, like Toast - the lady who tries to fight EVERYONE. I would swear Howell (with the vanity and amazing hair) is a Howl's moving castle reference. Also, it's nice to see that **spoilers**: Bee and Deckard's friendship continues long-distance. I can't say I read Bee as being romantically interested in him - or anyone, honestly - from those early episodes, though. I mean, there's another of Cas' brothers who much more clearly has a crush on her, and when he wants to view this outing she's taking him on as a date she's just kinda like "A date? Uh...sure, whatever, I guess." In fact, I thought we got a kind of flashback where Bee - looking exactly as she does now - is taking care of a child Deckard. Which would make sense if she's a robot who doesn't really age, and would explain why she was referred to in the first episode as something like "the young old lady". We also get more development for Cardamom, who is getting increasingly stressed out and starts wondering out loud why he is being allowed to take on these adult roles. Why is no adult really helping?

Throwing on the floor and seething because no matter how many plants i have, no matter how many fairy lights and cute cat humidifiers and nice baskets, magical aesthetic rooms and star spinner tarot posters i have - i still live in 4k real world, not 2d cute animation. FECK ALSO, star spinner tarot looks exactly like Puppycat lullaby about being spece outlaw in terms of graphic aesthetic

I personally think Bee was always an android and her "getting sick" was when she was somehow damaged and then rebuilt in to a more adult form

I discovered Bee and PuppyCat when I was bored looking through videos on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Yes, videos on the eShop were a thing, and it'll probably be forgotten over time. It's the best show to explain "adulting" to others, even if they may not get it. Here's hoping Lazy in Space will get an official release.

I only discovered your channel yesterday, binged all your videos (except your first one bc I still have to watch that anime) and it's kinda funny you uploaded today. Anyway I've meant to watch Bee and Puppycat for a long time now. But bc you uploaded this video I was like "I wanna watch this, but I don't wanna spoil myself. But the series is only one 1 hour so I can easily watch it." It went by SO FAST. Feels like 5 minutes ago I was laughing at Puppycat screaming and then 3 minutes ago sobbing bc of the ending (idk the whole thing with the sleeping mum just made me incredibly sad bc,, he's just a child man :,((( ). Anyway great video!! I really love your stuff :)♡

Bee and Puppycat is my favorite show, and yeah, I mean show, not only cartoon. I first watched the pilot episode when I was younger on my 3DS, and I loved it, but as time goes on, I forgot about it until years later. Once I found it again, I watched all the episodes and fell in love again. It’s beautiful, it’s emotional, it’s relatable, it’s everything I could ask for in a cartoon. I’m patiently waiting for the second season, and whenever it comes out, you bet I’m going on a marathon.

My theory is bee was a human but she got really REALLY sick beyond treatment so her dad made an attempt to keep her alive by making her part robot
