Robbin said on an interview that they were criticized because they were doing R&B Soul and Funk. They had always had great admiration for R&B artists like Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, The Stylistics, etc… Robin said it was called Blue Eyed Soul when white artists did R&B. Throughout their career they were always criticized. First they were Called Beatles imitators which they never were. Yeah, falsetto voices have been around for several centuries. They were quite popular in opera, as far back as the 1500's. This whole arguement is incredibly fueled by ignorance. "Falsetto - Wikipedia By the 16th century (1500's) the term falsetto was common in Italy. The physician, Giovanni Camillo Maffei, in his book Discorso della voce e del modo d'apparare di cantar di garganta in 1562, explained that when a bass singer sang in the soprano range, the voice was called "falsetto". They were raised on the The Mills Brothers music as children and learned their harmonies from Black music. They loved rhythm and blues, soul and always felt the music donated to Saturday Night Fever was of this ilk, they did not know it was to be a Disco film. In Manchester & the north of England they had this dance craze called Northern Soul the BeeGees were probably aware of this as they were aware of many things worldwide in music. It had black roots too as did the Jive. Disco, House, Garage.......

Wow! I never heard that before, that the Bee Gees stole anything! That guy must have been jealous. As you can hear in this video, Barry didn't always sing falsetto. Barry didn't start out singing falsetto. And Barry, Maurice aka Mo and Robin can all sing falsetto. As in this video, Barry's singing in his lower register voice. And these guys wrote their own songs, even though they couldn't read or write music. That's true talent. React to: "Spirits Having Flown" by the album of the same name. Robin sang lead on "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and Maurice sings lead on "Man in the Middle" and "Closer than Close". RIP Mo, Robin & Andy. xxx

Patty-I feel that people who have to criticize others that have an itch to scratch and they dont care how it comes out. Im black and never felt offended. I remember reading that an R&B artist said that in his opinion they were great with R&B, but in his opinion Robin was the one who had nailed the Blue Eyed Soul style. Also, Quincy Jones stated thathey had the best harmoines and total sound he had ever heard. 2 people from the black music world who acknowledged them. Bodyguard and Sensuality are perfect smooth performances by Robin. Sensuality, unfortunately, was never released.

Rolling Stones was full of it. So does that mean noone can be inspired by other artists or musicians? I like your assessment - yes it is stupid to say that. And the Gibb Brothers often in interviews would say they were influenced by the Mills Brothers, the Everly Brothers, Frankie Valli's high falsetto ( white), but also Otis Retting, Stevie Wonder, the Stylistics and others both black and white. And the BeeGees created their own distinctive sound so I sooo agree with you!❤❤❤

So I wonder if that reporter said the same thing about the Beach Boys? They used quite a bit of falsetto in their vocals. Oh and I guess that would apply to Frankie Valli too. Falsetto has been a staple of pop music since there has been pop music. Dude just wanted to sell some magazines! I saw the Spirits tour when it came through Houston. I was up in the nosebleed seats but it was still an amazing experience! For Robin leads "Bodyguard" would be good. Its a Bee Gees song from around 1990. "Juliet" and "How Old Are You?" are good songs from his solo albums. "Massachusetts" was the Bee Gees first number 1 record back in the 60's and is also a Robin lead. Another Robin lead that gets requested a lot is "Rings Around the Moon". It was recorded for their last album, This is Where I Came In, but got bumped off the final recording.

The live version on the Midnight Special has better sound quality. Funny comment about Robin's hair. I recall an interview where Barry indicated his dad used to tell him (Barry) to tell Robin to comb his hair before going on stage! They were definitely influenced by the soul and R&B, so "imitating" is a bit strong. Barry sings this low in Fanny as well. I prefer his chest voice to falsetto.

In 1972-73, the Bee Gees wrote and recorded an album entitled "A Kick in the Head Is Worth Eight in the Pants" but their manager scrapped it and it was never released, however, bootlegged copies were put out. The songs are all on KZitem. On this album ROBIN sings lead on the entire song "Home Again Rivers" which has a real country sound. Robin and Barry share the leads on most of the songs on the album. Check out "Rocky L.A." Robin sings rock! Just pick nearly any song from this album to hear more of Robin. I hate that this album was never released by them. I consider it one of their best! Another interesting tidbit - the song "Elisa" from this album is the only song the Bee Gees did where all 3 share the lead.

You’re right. There is a mix of emotions - sad and upbeat at the same time. It reflects where they were in their careers. They were considered 1960’s old news. Their Mr. Natural album couldn’t get played. They were playing in some small town joints to get by, Maurice was drinking heavily because divorcing Lulu, Robin got heckled in the clubs, and the description of those days is just horrible…. But they loved Miami and working with Arif Mardin. They seem to be encouraging themselves, probably because they could feel it in their Main Course music - or at least hoped they could, and they were right. They had successfully reinvented themselves for a new generation in a new country and lived their dream. You could say the song is prophetic. It’s definitely inspirational. I love it! Barry is a man of many voices and vocal styles. Try DOWN THE ROAD.

For Robin lead vocal songs please check out their album Living Eyes. It was their follow up album to Spirts (Having Flown.) Living Eyes was released in 1981 following the ridiculous disco backlash that targeted the Bee Gees so unfairly. So, the brothers were trying to distance themselves from the style of Saturday Night Fever with a more sophisticated sound, almost with jazz undertones. They left the falsetto behind and featured Robin and Maurice much more on Living Eyes, Barry only had a couple of lead songs on Living Eyes and they are amazingly beautiful. At the time of the making and release of Living Eyes, the brothers were not only dealing with the backlash but they also found out that their long-time manager Robert Stigwood had secretly and underhandedly acquired all the rights to their entire song catalog... every single song. The Bee Gees had to file several high-profile lawsuits against Stigwood to get their songs back, the lawsuits were among the largest in music history at the time. It took a couple of years, and as Barry said, he had to "go to war" to get their songs back, but they did get back their entire song catalog, every single song. So... all that was going on during the making of Living Eyes, and because of the lawsuits the brothers didn't have Stigwood's production and distribution team behind the release of Living Eyes, so for the most part the album went under the radar and didn't receive much airplay still due to the backlash. But to many die-hard Bee Gee's fans Living Eyes is one of the brothers most beautiful works of art; it is a more sophisticated grown-up sound but many of the songs such as Robin's Don't Fall in Love with Me are absolute master class sublime songs. (One caveat on Living Eyes, and this is just my opinion... The brothers were trying to distance themselves from the disco label and were trying to create a different vibe on Living Eyes, so they experimented and picked the one song on the whole album I personally don't like that much, though many fans do like it, and that's He's a Liar. They picked He's a Liar for the single from the album to distance themselves from disco because it was such a different sound from them. But in my opinion if they had instead gone with the album title song Living Eyes or the song Paradise, both much more broadly appealing to the ear IMO I think the album would have done better on the charts. Some critics have called He's a Liar "clunky" I wouldn't go that far, I think it was inventive, but should have been left as a deep cut on the album not the first single released to see how it did on the charts. I've always wondered which song Robert Stigwood would have gone with if they hadn't cut ties, he always had a magic touch when it came to picking singles and album promotion for the Bee Gees.)

"I Can't See Nobody" and "And the Sun Will Shine" are two wonderful songs you can react to using their 1974 Melbourne concert. Both are awesome. Solo endeavors- there are so many but I think you should start with 1983's "Juliet" from his "How Old Are You?" album and I'd love for you to react to "Toys" from his 1985 "Walls Have Eyes" album. Both have official videos but, for "Juliet", please use one of his live performances from 1983 or their 1989 Melbourne concert. You won't be disappointed with any of these wonderful songs, I promise.

Well, the Rolling Stone magazine nearly always tried to push Bee Gees out of the race, but they failed so wretched. Ignorance combined with arrogance is their's. Greatest problem for them and also other so called musicexperts was, they couldn't put bros. Gibb in one drawer. Every time, when they opened another one, Bee Gees were to find. Much too varied for them. But so what, Barry, Robin and Maurice went into eternity and not these kiddy kind of writers. I'm a great fan of songs, where Barry/Robin or Robin/Barry shared leadvocals. For excample on tracks like 'Run To Me', 'Walking Back To Waterloo' or 'Lovers', were also Maurice had leadsequences.

I'm sorry, but someone who thinks that someone born with a god given talent, can't use that talent if someone else has similar talent, is just plain STUPID. #1 Barry was born in '46, and the twins in '49. They started singing and harmonizing as children. They stole nothing. Black soul music didn't start showing up until the late 50's, 60's and 70's. "History of Soul Music - Timeline of African American Music "With its roots in gospel music and the broader Black church culture, soul music captured the spirit, emotions, and chaos of the 1960s civil unrest that continued into the early 1970s. The soul sound began to take shape during the 1950s, the beginning of the modern Civil Rights movement." Look it up people. I don't hear anyone complaining about the talented Black artists in the Rock genre.

It sure sound strange to put it mildly! God did not assign no one to a specific genre of music, one does what ever they like or what is appealing to them! Music has no color, we are all one!

They were influenced by black soul, RnB music, telling it in many interviews, like EVERY artist is influenced by others. I also love maneskin, the "new" young italian bands and all 4 members have different artists (bands) and are influenced by them in their songs! And MANY artists are influenced by the Bee Gees, have covered their songs, like Elvis, Janis Joplin, boyzone.... the guy from Rolling Stones is an idi**, sorry, but Rolling Stones don`t like the Bee Gees, no idea why! Another song with Barrys rough voice is Every minute, every second, check it out! This album (main course) marked a great change for the Bee Gees as it was their first album to include mostly R&B, soul and funk-influenced songs, and created the model for their output through the rest of the 1970s.Working with Atlantic producer Arif Mardin,, their music became much more influenced by Funk sound over a base of R&B style According to producer Arif Mardin, they started to record new material and some of the numbers were still in their old ballad style, and the Bee Gees at that time were listening to a lot of American R&B groups' songs as Mardin is an R&B producer. Mardin also suggested they listen to current R&B artists including Stevie Wonder- At first, the brothers were still writing in their old ways, with many of the songs being slower ballads. The first song recorded for the album was an unreleased track "Was It All in Vain?". The next songs recorded were "Country Lanes" and "Wind of Change". After Robert Stigwood heard these songs, he urged them to record in a more R&B style and "Wind of Change" was re-recorded again in February in its more familiar version.
