Hey Pacifica Fisherman I think it's time we got you a cooking network. You could watch your own show instead of "Calling Saul." You really are getting creative with the spices. Never knew that there was a wait time for beer batter to transform. I am going to have to try salsa (safe way or otherwise) with my next fish dinner it keeps things light, tasty and adds a bit of a tang I would think. I am staying tuned for when the perch start running. Meantime, may the force be with you.

Thanks. The Silver Perch are already hitting the local beaches, and I am going to do a Catch n Cook Silver Perch video as my next project (this coming Saturday). Yes, a good salsa and some good chips (I've just discovered Tostitos with a hint of Lime) really goes well with fried fish.

Oh yeah, I 've had em like that before many times. They are good that way. It is a very common fish to catch in these parts, so after awhile, you develop different ways to prepare them.

JS has a bad rap from those caught with worms but if you can pull up some worm-free ones they’re super tasty. You’re one of the only people out here putting up JS catch & cooks so thank you for that.

Yeah, whenever I catch them in Montara, they are worm free. I fished in the Delta once in Alameda and caught about 6 Jack Smelt, but they all had worms in them. Not very appealing, even though the word is that once you cook them, then worms will die and not be a health threat.

I eat them. They are tasty. My only problem are the little bones. I think i saw you Saturday during incoming tide tucked into the north corner of the small beach i was at?

That looks good. Mmmm. I usually give the surf smelt to Asian anglers around me, never thought they would be good to eat. I guess I'm spoiled on more popular game fish . Rock fish, lingcod and striper....but I can see how the smelt could be a nice substitute.

Yeah, and there are a ton of them out there as well, so you can feel good about thinning out the herd a bit by putting them on the plate! The best are the really small smelt that you can sometimes catch with a net in the shallows. I haven't seen them for quite awhile now, the last time being in Mendocino County at the base of a river. There were so many of them there that they were coming in with the waves and jumping onto the sand. I wasn't sure if it was the Salmon that were coming into the rivers mouth that were scaring these smelt onto the sand, or the seals that were grouped together just behind the breakers, but they were all over the place. When they are small (about 3 to 5 inches), after cleaning them, you dip them in batter and deep fry. With those small ones you can eat the bones and everything after they are deep fried, kind of like the small sardines you get in the cans. Crunchy and tasty. There is nothing that compares to it . . . a unique eating experience.

Great vlog. really enjoyed the preparation of the fish fry. It makes you wanna drop what your doing and go fishing for dinner.

Yeah it is funny how when you see someone else eating something, it gives you an appetite for the same thing. Esp. if they are eating it right across from you and you can smell the aroma of the freshly cooked thing. Makes you want to run out and get one for yourself! lol

My favorite place to fish. I went through a couple year stint once of making that climb every Saturday morning, and not coming back out until the sun was going down. I took a pillow out there once and dozed off for a couple of hours. When I woke up I thought I was in heaven. lol.

Yeah, they are real good. By the way, I still have not forgotten about the catch and cook on the Striped Perch. I just haven't pulled one up since you mentioned it. I think it will be coming soon, though, as this is about the time of year I pull up a lot of Striped Perch. I had pulled one up a few months ago at Martin's Beach, but ended up giving it away to another Fisherman on the beach that said he had never eaten one before. They like hanging out in rocks near the surf. Which makes sense as their skin colors resemble a lot of the local rocks, so its a good place for them to hide when they are not feeding.
