Live recording - January 17th, 1953
The entire concert of January 17, 1953 was already on KZitem a few years ago, but was withdrawn. It seems to me that only the second piece of that concert remains loaded: the Concert by Martucci (Horszowski - see: • Martucci Piano Concert... ). With the publication of this Egmont (and William Tell overture, • Rossini Guglielmo Tell... ) I would like to complete the triptych again.
With its 8'29 " (without applause and commentaries), this version of the Egmont is one of the most solemn and thoughtful by Toscanini (second only to the performance in Lucerna 1946 - 8'45"). What a contrast with the recording in the studio made two days later (7'46''): yet no one will ever be able to accuse Toscanini of being hasty in the Allegro (Karajan and others adopt a more impetuous gait, also however without being blamed a loss of control!); the most obvious difference seems to me to be in the introduction, here much more meditative than in the studio.
